Steelers wide receiver Sammie Coates underwent surgery to repair fractures and tendon damage in his left ring and index fingers, per source. Coates -- who said on social media that his surgery went 'great' -- posted 421 yards in his first five games of 2016, but 14 yards over the final 11 games as he dealt with the injury. Coates planned to rehab the injury to avoid surgery but the plan changed recently.

Then what the hell was he doing out there on special teams after he broke his fingers, and why did they keep trotting him out there as a wr? Obviously playing made the injury worse.

glad he got that taken care of. hope he comes back strong

Well lets hope they sewed in some velcro on those hands...they weren't exactly great before the fingers

If he was playing, even on special teams, Tomlin is an *******, period. No way he should have been playing if (and that's a big if) his fingers were that bad. He should have had surgery back when the injury happened and missed 6 to 8 weeks and come back. Instead, they wasted the entire year doing what they did and the kid may never play for this team again. His confidence is obviously shot and his rapport with Ben is gone. If Bryant is back next year and we do sign AB, I would be very surprised to see Coates back next year. He would have to have one hell of a great training camp and pre-season.

It's a shame.

I know my confidence in him is completely gone and that's likely not his fault. And yet I can never look at #14 out there and feel like that's a "good thing". That's just the way it is. Any time I see a ball lobbed deep to Sammy, I'm automatically groaning.

Hope it fixes this -

Were the doctors able to give him a new pair hands? Coates so far has been the next Dwight Stone, though the later had more value as a kickoff return man and reverse runner.

Not ready to give up on him yet. He's made a bunch of huge plays. Let's see if he can get his hands back after the surgery

WEAKNESSES Won't be on quarterback's Christmas card list. Wasn't always on same page with Auburn QB Nick Marshall. Unreliable target. Inexplicable focus drops in all areas of the field. Doesn't play with extended catch radius. Had a drop rate of 19.1 percent. Vertical receiver without vertical feel. Inconsistent play speed. Will gear down too easily on deep routes, turning catchable touchdowns into "overthrows." Suspect ball tracking. Must improve at using body to ward off defenders. Inconsistent with contested catches. Stiff hips and limited route runner. Slow to gather and turn it upfield on catch-and-runs.

Not like it hasn't always been a problem

Pretty much sums up the AFCC.

wow, who is this scout? we should use him all the time. he is spot on............coates sucks

I still have hope for Coates. He deserves a chance next preseason to win a spot on the team. If he doesn't, bye. My fear is this poor season may have shot his confidence.

My concern is that Coates confidence in himself is gone. He was a decent big-play option early in the year before the injury, but after he was basically useless as a receiver. After reading about this surgery, I can't figure out (1) why he didn't have it sooner, (2) why he wasn't placed on the IR, (3) even if they kept him for special teams, why he got snaps during the most important game of the year when he couldn't catch.

uh, ya...

I really have to question the Steelers medical staff and Tomlin for it. Kid should have had surgery months ago. If he would have needed IR so be it. I'd have rather had Ayers out there in the end anyhow.

A Bunch ???

I'm not giving up on him but know he has a lot of work to do. CMVLT has a LOT of work to do also.

Salute the nation

Brown, Bryant, Wheaton, Rogers, Ayers, DHB ... Coates is expendable and couldn't catch a cold. He'll look good in orange and brown tho.

My eyes are on Bryant. If he comes back and has his head on right. The sky is the limit. Crossing my fingers
