Coaching "tree"...

Most of the highly thought of head coaches in the NFL have what is considered a "coaching tree"...

Seems that all of the highly thought of former and current coaches seem to get that recognition.

My question that I need help with is....

"what is Mike Tomlin's coaching tree?"...


He has been in the league long enough to have at least a "sapling" started.
 
Obviously when assessing the coaching tree we have to examine every blade of grass. No rocks will go un-turned as we don't live in our fears, we live in our hopes. Be where you are at, and that is where you will be. With coaching iron sharpens iron, You see people aren't very good listeners, by nature … Part of being a good communicator is recognizing and understanding that and trying to make the complex simple. Try to capture a concept, an idea or a moment in a few words. If they remember it, job done.There's going to be some joyful lifting for us if you will in terms of some of the tasks we have to do. I believe we treat every player equal, but not every player. I see you understand the words coming out of my mouth, good to see that don't blink mentality.I’m not trying to turn this into a global coaching discussion. Up to this time it has been popcorn. With butter carefully sprinkled throughout the box. You don't want to short yourself on butter. It wouldn't be a pretty thing.We're not comfort-seeking in terms of the coaching that has produced or hasn't. It is what it is obviously as the standard is the standard.
 
Has a coach on Mike Tomlin's staff ever been hired off the Steelers in the form of a promotion? I don't think it's ever happened.
 
Munch, but his was a lateral move. Point is, somebody else wanted him. Think Joey Porter is gonna coach again any time soon?

What is Belichick’s coaching tree?

Sometimes the coaching tree philosophy gets more stigma than what it really is. Certain coaches brought forth a particular system or model and their staff continued it. Playing under Paul Brown obviously cultivated a coaching career for Chuck Noll. So his system had influence, but Chaz primarily came from Sid Gilman’s coaching tree which was huge because of his innovative ideas that came with the modern era. What was Chuck’s tree? I really only can count Dungy and Fox. If anyone can think of others please add. Tony had a lot more coaches move on to the HC ranks than Chuck himself, but again that was mainly due to revising Noll and Bud Carson’s defense into the Tampa 2 scheme.

Bill Walsh...another innovator to the game, which I respect immensely, but really dislike how it changed the game (West Coast offense and the short pass is a run system). He by far has a ton of tree HCs, with Bill Parcells almost even with him (who came from Ray Perkins). Yet for how successful the coaches are or not it’s really difficult in this era because immediate results are required. That wasn’t the case with the coaches that started these trees to begin with. They were give much, much more time during their period today.

Cowher definitely had influence on the league with the DLB zone blitz. All those of defensive assistants getting their chances because of it.

Opinion wise, coaching tree derivatives “bear fruit” after a couple of coaching “generations”. Andy Reid, while from Holmgren’s really was from Walsh. Cowher was from Marty’s. Like most sports all themes are cyclical. There will be another renaissance again (hopefully after Goodell retires), and coaching tree bares newer fruit with innovations to the same philosophies.

I was going to bring that up. Seems most if not all of Belicheat's assistants don't do as well on their own once they're away from the cheating and Ernie Adams.

While it's true they haven't shown much success, at least they are getting the opportunities.

Ok...let’s put it in perspective.....Chin had how many assistants become successful HC? Marvin? Yeah he had longevity, but that’s due to Mike Brown’s philosophy, not his playoff successes. Chan Gailey? Malarkey? Whiz? All great assistants, but haven’t been successful as HCs. We won’t really know until a couple of coaching generations come through. I mean hard to believe that Pete Carroll has been around a while and he came from Dungy’s tree.

Cowher coaches longer than 12 years, been out of coaching even longer, he doesn’t have anything to show for it. Does that devalue his legacy as a coach?

I hear Yaz Ike and patience is a virtue but in this world of what have you done for me now, no one wants to wait and see. I'll be surprised if a major spawn comes from this stump or tree once grown. My problem isn't the coaching tree but the coaching itself, seems to be going down hill for a long time and we have had ample talent to progress NOT degrees as has been the case. I hope TOMLIN grasps this oppertunity to move this team ahead and up. Use this off-season as a stepping / learning / teaching experience in a positive way.

Yeah I know DIC, all the ones I mentioned were HC at one point. I liked Whiz, still do. Bidwell and Adams family haven’t been the staple of coaching security for some time now even when they are winning. At the time I wanted Whiz to be named HC as he knew how to reign in a young Ben of his school ground over tendencies and use the run game with Parker and Bettis.

Wasn't Dom Capers Carolina's first coach and coach them to the NFCCG. Marvin Lewis coached an all time great(single season) defense in Baltimore, and a huge reason they won a super bowl.

Pretty sure you're right Coryea and I was kinda pissed we lost Capers to the panthers but it was a move up. Who replaced him???
