#Steelers K Chris Boswell got a 2nd-round RFA tender.

11:33 AM - 12 Mar 2018

Sounds pretty solid..

I had read that the second round tender was strictly the money side of the tender. The Wizard of Boz wasn't drafted so if he is signed away the respective team would have to give up their equal round draft pick to the departing team. So with Boz not being drafted
there is no draft pick aquisition. Am I correct on this?????

I believe there is no compensation, correct. Unless I read it wrong..

I believe a couple of you are interpreting it incorrect. Though I'm not 1000% sure... I believe in this case, there's 3 levels Bos could be tendered. The lowest is "original" drafted tender being the least, with a compensation being a pick equal to the round the player was drafted... in this case, undrafted, resulting in no compensation.

In this actual case, the Steelers did tender him the 2nd round amount, so regardless of his original draft spot, or lack of, if Steelers do not match an offer tendered by another team, because of their high value tender, they would in fact receive a 2nd round pick.

Otherwise, what's the point in offering any more than lowest tender, let other teams negotiate and either match or don't match. Maybe they'd get to match less than the 2mil+ they did tender?

I disagree. I believe I read it as no compensation because he was an UFA. Only difference is you get a right of refusal. But a cap rich team could easily write an unmatchable offer.

Could be onto something...................... Makes sense but then there are things about the nfl that make NO sense at all....Although the NFL ALWAYS wants to make cents............

That's for sure!

But in that case, why make a 2 mil offer... they get right to 1st refusal with any offer, so regardless, a cap rich team could make an offer unmatchable. But if not, they could potentially keep Bos for less than 2 mil?

As already reported, a second-round restricted free agent tender on Boswell comes with a one-year, $2.914 million price tag. It also means that should Boswell sign an offer sheet with another team during free agency that the Steelers refuse to match, Pittsburgh would receive that team’s second-round draft pick. In short, no team is going to sign Boswell to an offer sheet.

That's what I had thought n in poking around, I read in a couple places (working from my phone n having difficulty posting links)...

There are 3 possible offer tenders that can be used on RFA. 1st round tender, resulting in 1st round draft pick compensation from new team ,if player is signed away by another team. A second round tender (exercised by Steelers on Boswell at approx. 2.9 mil), resulting in 2nd round draft pick compensation from new team, if player is signed away by another team. And last, original round tender, with compensation to be determined by players original draft status, in Boswell's case being undrafted, therefore, the only scenario Steelers would not be compensated if they don't match another team's offer.

Bos has been very good, and I'm more than happy he'll be staying a Steeler, but not so good a team would give up their 2nd round pick for him. Actually a pretty good deal for Steelers considering some of the premiere kickers are getting 4mil+ and Boswell has been performing at level among the best.

Yeah, 3 level of tiers

Low: $1.907M
2nd Round: $2.914M
1st Round:$4.149M

The low tender is original round, so it's a 5th if the guy was drafted in a 5th or if in Boswell's case he was undrafted it would be no compensation. Since they would receive no compensation if they tendered boswell at the low amount, they gave him a second round tender. I doubt anyone is going to offer Bos a contract and give up a second round pick. There have only been a couple kickers even drafted in the 2nd round in the past 2 decades. Only kicker worth a 2nd rounder in the league is probably Justin Tucker.

Also Jesse James had his contract escalate to the low RFA offer amount because he's played at least 35% of snaps through his first 3 years. Good for him, since he was originally going to get about 800k or so.

Also seems like it should be fairly easy to see a path to getting Boswell done for 5 years and about 17.5mil. In a 5 year deal they could probably get his cap hit down to about 1.6m this year or something.

That means he'll still be a Steeler, as long as the NFL doesn't draft kickers like Coach...or the Raiders...

Cope,

Most drafts have some kickers or punters taken, but few have long snappers! The Steelers have drafted all three positons, usually with bad to mediocre results.

I felt Boswell had pro bowl ability in his rookie year. He is very, very good. I have faith in the guy when the game is on the line.

You have to wonder why the Steelers offered a 6th round pick for Scobee ( he sucked, hated that move ) and took a while to find his replacement.

At any rate, with a 2nd round tender, Boswell is not going anywhere.

Are some of you guys new NFL fans or just never paid attention to free agency before? I’m really stunned by the lack of understanding about the franchise and RFA tags. These have been in place for decades and the Steelers have used them both, the RFA tag numerous times (Emmanuel Sanders).

Chickillo got an original round RFA tender, he'll get 1,9 M, good for him. The kid earned a spot

When your red zone offense is as bad as the Steelers', you've got to keep a good kicker.

I think the confusion is caused by Boswell having been undrafted. Otherwise, it's pretty clear... 1st round tender = 1st round compensation, 2nd = 2nd, original = original, but that he's undrafted caused question that there is no compensation for any tender.
