Defensive Backs Coach, Carnell Lake, issued the following statement on Wednesday.

Carnell Lake Statement I have decided to return to California to be able to be a part of my youngest son’s last year of high school football.
I want to thank Mr. Art Rooney II and the Rooney family, Coach Mike Tomlin, Kevin Colbert, the coaching staffs I have worked with throughout my time in Pittsburgh, and the entire Steelers organization. It has been a privilege and honor to play and coach for the Pittsburgh Steelers. I also want to thank all of the players I have coached during my seven years with the team – it truly was an honor to work with them. Finally, I would like to thank Steelers fans for their support and for being the best fans in the NFL during both my time as a player and coach.

Now if we could only lose five more coaches on defense.

Thats how we roll..the Rooney Way.

You dont publicly embarrass an ex-player when his job performance is not meeting "the standard"...

Open. honest. and respectful conversation leads to amicable parting and continuing long term relationships between the organization and their former great players and coaches....that deserve it.

Next is Joey Porter.

DB Coach Carnell Lake Has Resigned

Secondary Coach Carnell Lake has resigned from his position effective immediately. Next is Joey Porter.

Except Joey's kids play high school football in Pittsburgh for the same school that Mikey Regular Season's kids go to and play ball for.

They should try to get Darren Perry. Perry has actually been a successful DB coach for years. Not sure where he is now.

Or Hines Ward might know a thing or two about how to cover. Remember Joe Greene's first coaching job was the offensive line.

Wow, there was no hint of this. I wonder is he was forced out. Either way, Lake was a great player did not strike me as a good coach. He went off the handle saying how good players like Cortez Allen and S Thomas would be, when they bombed.

Was with Green Bay for many years, looks like he too has just moved on. He was let go by the Pack after being up for DC role. Was also in consideration for defensive coordinator job with Titans, who hired someone else. So technically, he's available.

Longtime Packers safeties coach Darren Perry moves on

Besides Perry, looks like we got some serious candidates to consider. I love it. With all due respect to Lake, it was high time to get some new blood on that defensive side of coaching.

Could Rod Woodson Be The Steelers New Secondary Coach?

“My dream job is to come back to the Black & Gold and coach those guys. They have Carnell, who started with the Steelers in 2011, the same time I started with the Raiders. We didn’t end up being as good as Pittsburgh was. I know they have Carnell and he’s done a great job and don’t want to replace him, but I would love to don those colors one more time somehow. Once a Steeler, you’re always a Steeler.”

I don't know if the job pays enough for Woodson to be interested.

TRUE, Carnell and Rod (Woodson) were both great players BUT I don't want ex-players unless they are PROVEN coaches. I want a coach 1st. And one that actually is a proven comodity. Enough of the Joey Porter **** fest(s).

Salute the nation

Bye Bye!
Should have been fired two years ago
But in typical Tomlin coaching, Lake had to make the decision to walk away...Haley did the same thing with Tomlin hiding in his office
If Tomlin had any balls, he would have fired Porter by now also...clearly no leadership at all

AND...Why is Mike Mitchell on the roster still? Should have been cut 10 minutes after the SECOND Jags failure, need to start getting rid of losers, next would be Dupree

Another name I've seen bandied about is Dom Capers, in the mold of the Munchak hire. Capers has been around the block, his specialty is the defensive backfield. Not sure if he's even interested in being a d-back coach at this stage, just thought I'd throw this info out there.

Not mentioned but a dark horse is Deshea Townsend too. He’s been an assistant DB coach for AZ and NY. He was a very intelligent DB with lots of experience.

Does the job pay less than what the Oakland Raiders pay their defensive backs coach? As that's what Woodson's been doing these past few years.

Deshea just signed to be a coach with the Giants.

We can always bring back Ray Horton...

Ray Horton Another Obvious Candidate To Potentially Become Steelers Next DB Coach

Sounds like Tomlin and Butler can get some candidates lined up and take their time figuring out who's the best fit. Regardless, I'm looking forward to a much improved secondary next season, with hopefully adding a few new players along the way.

Whoever it is let it be someone with a vast amount of experience.

Thank you for your time Carnell

I would much rather have an ex player that had to overcompensate for their short comings than an all world athlete.

I didn’t know he was still coaching. I guess I’m still a hater.
