We are 2nd to last in pass defense at 347.5 yards per game and dead last in sacks for the season just one.

You have to seriously wonder about the pass rush and the DB's hardly stopping anyone and at time missing tackles. Can the team win like this, with Ben throwing some passes that are intercepted and others that should have been intercepted? I'd say no.

Vs. a better QB, or on a fair day without rain and a wet field, this D is going to be hung out to dry so to speak.

Shazier, in particular, has been very impressive. Without him, this rush 3 drops 8 would not work, however, our resident Ferrari is going to need some time in the shop according to his history.

Have you seen either game?

Please watch the video. He explains very well why the STAT(pass defense) is not a indicator of the defense playing bad. Just the opposite.

This is a bend don't break defense. Reminds me of the Patriots in 2005 where they allowed yards between the 20's and kept everything in front of them. Once they didn't have to worry about getting beat over top they tightened up and forced a field goal attempt at best. They hope on a key big play to stop a drive if not they hold to the field goal. I think when Dupree and Golson are back we can take a few more chances but right now all I care about is we are 2-0 and have the 7th ranked scoring defense.

They weren't even playing a "rush 3 drop 8" against cincy - it was a 4 man rush with a cover 2 zone behind it pretty much all day

so Coach never watched the game - being a closet Browns fan, why would he?

there has been pressures. just one sack so far. Dalton was hit multiple times....he'll Tuitt laid out him out so hard...his helmet flew out...probably made Faneca proud.

Not worried about yards when we are up double digits and the other team has to abandon the run to make plays. What got me was they kept running the same dump off play and we missed Bernard. We need to adjust and stop that play. If the goal was to limit deep passes then we did very well, and oh yeah we Won. So there's that too.

not to mention this secondary will only get better...not having #41 back there is a huge improvement.

Sean Davis will be getting better each game
Cockrell is getting better
golden is playing solid
you still have Golson and Gilbert to add to the rotation
Burns looks like will be a good one.

future is bright back there..

not to mention the speed...this defense swarms to the ball...even the NT (Hargrave) was tackling RBS 30 yds down the field.

We held the Bengals to 54 yards on the ground.

Yeah im saying coach just pulled up the stats... I think two games in we are better off than we ought to be at this point.. The d will gel more by week 6 and the interception issue is a non issue... 3 ints, one off the wr hands, two punt balls... One was beneficial...

They couldn't get much from being stuck inside the 20 at their end much of the game.

We want them to try and run, every run is a gift, keeps their passing attack away from our secondary

So far it looks like we can keep winning this way. The red zone defense is good. 25% conversion rate on third downs. The other team was held to 16 points even with the zebras helping them. With out aid from the zebras they might have only had 9 points. Keeping the other team from scoring is the job of the defense and it seems to be doing that very well.

How many points have they allowed? While I do somewhat agree with your sentiment, this defense has allowed 2 touchdowns through 2 games. As far as I'm concerned, teams can put up 700 yards of offense per game as long as they continue to keep teams out of the endzone. And that's a trend that goes back to last season.

Yeah we can. We will generate more pass rush as the season goes on and won't be playing playoff teams every week

This, so much. Against Washington and the bungholes, we held leads of Atleast 15 points. At that point, teams are just going to throw throw and throw some more. Dalton threw the ball 54 times yesterday. That's an absurd number.

I thought it was a pretty dominant performance by the group,” Mike Mitchell said. “Obviously, they got us for a lot of yards, but if you really watch this football game, it was a lot of dink and dunk and we were able to take 18 (Green) out of the game. Obviously, we knew with that offense and him being such a great player, if we minimized his impact, the outcome was going to be good for us and it was.”

Green told reporters he didn’t know if the Steelers played a single possession of man-to-man coverage, and Mitchell was pleased that he felt that way.

“There were some times when we had to match-up, but we did do a good job of hiding it and disguising it so that way it wouldn’t be easy for Andy to decipher,” Mitchell said. “Obviously, we have to play our defense. Some times it’s going to require for us to play fire zone and man. I thought we did a great job today disguising everything, making everything kind of look same as. That’s why I think he said that.”

We were disguising our looks so well AJ Green was confused. I say job well done

if you mean by scoring more points than the opponent...then yes the Steelers can keep winning like that

PITTSBURGH -- So this is what the Pittsburgh Steelers' defensive rebuild is supposed to look like.

One soggy, throwback day of football in Heinz Field validated all those defensive draft picks and free-agency signings over the past four years. Pittsburgh slowly "de-striped" the Bengals' offense in a 24-16 victory and is at least entertaining the question of whether vintage Steelers defensive football is finally back.

Well, maybe not Polamalu-and-Harrison-in-their-prime back. But two touchdowns allowed in eight quarters? That's a heckuva start heading into Sunday's matchup with Carson Wentz and the Philadelphia Eagles.

"I think you'll continue to see us get better," safety Mike Mitchell said.

James Harrison forced wide receiver Tyler Boyd to fumble, which closed the door on any Bengals comeback. Jason Bridge/USA TODAY Sports
The Steelers sealed the game with the recovery of a Tyler Boyd fumble with 2:00 left. The ball came loose on a James Harrison tackle at the Steelers’ 33-yard line, and safety Robert Golden recovered.

The Steelers used to struggle to overcome the rare sluggish day from the offense. But with the passing game's inconsistency in the rain, there was the defense, holding the Bengals to 34 rushing yards on their first 16 carries and Andy Dalton to less than 50 percent passing for much of the day.

If the Steelers can win games this way, especially without having to force a bunch of turnovers, they'll really have something, because the offense’s timing won’t be this off very often.

The defining moment came late in the third quarter, with the Bengals driving 74 yards to the Steelers' 1. On first-and-goal, the Steelers got a tackle for a loss from linebacker Ryan Shazier and forced two incompletions. Shazier said the Steelers spent significant time during the week diagnosing the Bengals' goal-line offensive tendencies. They held Cincinnati to a field goal, and even that wasn't satisfying. "We were trying to hold them to nothing," Harrison said.

Make no mistake, Dalton's play was disjointed for the first three quarters, and so was the Bengals' offense. The only favorable matchup for Cincinnati’s offense was Gio Bernard in the passing game. Bernard had 100 receiving yards, including a 25-yarder where he blew by rookie corner Artie Burns.

And the rain affected both offenses. Bengals-Steelers isn’t built to be high-scoring in even good weather.

But the Steelers didn’t rely on splash plays like last year. They simply got stops, holding A.J. Green to two catches for 38 yards with Ross Cockrell following him in coverage much of the day. Two length-of-field Bengals drives resulted in field goals. This is a good red zone defense.

Dalton finished with 366 yards, but much of that came in come-from-behind fashion against softer coverage, and he needed 54 passing attempts to get there.

"I believe in the group," said coach Mike Tomlin of his secondary.

The Steelers have one sack through two games and are still getting wins. That's a good sign for the pass coverage. The secondary isn't perfect, but it's definitely better. Third-down dime coverage worked well for much of the game, with rookies Sean Davis and Burns on the field together. Save both missing tackles on Bernard's touchdown, they acquitted themselves well in an extended look.

Safety Mike Mitchell and corner William Gay were hitting with aggression all day. And Shazier looks like the Steelers' next great linebacker.

The Steelers will face better quarterbacks than Kirk Cousins and Dalton. But they won't face an elite one until Tom Brady in Week 7. And after spending seven first- or second-rounders on defensive players since 2013, that investment is starting to pay off.

Mitchell points to a cohesive defensive backfield settling in after a few years of personnel changes.

"I think we've found our core group of guys," Mitchell said. "Today we had to cover. And we were able to get ourselves off the field."

you don't have to wonder about anything. The defense is playing fine. They are getting pressure and forcing QBs to throw a bunch of short routes....Dalton threw several that should have been intercepted...it happens...especially in rainy weather.

I don't give a **** how many passing yards they get as long as the either end up punting or attempting field goals....teams are not going to win by getting 3 points at a time...

Have you seen either game?

Yes, have you?!

Cousins played like a rookie. He stunk out the joint. Dalton was limited by a wet field and rain. A big reason why Green and Brown had quiet days. The Steelers are playing too much of a prevent defense by design.

Teams with a sharper QB, a running back dangerous out of the back field, a back who can catch, a taller TE with Speed, or one that goes 4-5 wide will rip up this rush 3 cover 8 defense.

On a day without rain, most QB's will pick us apart with no pass rush. And it's not like our DB's are making many plays on the ball

Shazier has bene brilliant, but if history shows anything our resident Lambrugini will be spending some time in the shop.

Whatever number they are rushing isn't getting to the quarterback. Like I said Spike, we are last in sacks and 2nd to last in pass defense. Lucky in many ways.

Davis is terrible in coverage, takes bad angles to the ball and is an iffy tackler. Now that teams have film on him, they will target him more often. Hess playing because S. Thomas is that bad.

I agree with you on Golden.

Burns is still raw, but at least he flashed some ability. His break up play in the end zone was nice. As I suggest he might be our best deeper match up on Green.

Or by design... the steelers have not run anything simular to what they did last year, but they also faced cousins, who struggles vs zones, and Dalton, who is overly reliant on the big play to green to provide offense. two weeks in and you are jumping to conclusions. Two weeks mean nothing in the grand scheme of a season... talk to us in novemeber....
