Cameron Heyward fined for bringing awareness to his father's cancer

Ah, October. Leaves start to change and fall off the trees. Your favorite teams start wearing pink. And the NFL starts fining people for Cancer Awareness during Cancer Awareness month...

Here's something I'd like to see. And Roger Goodell would be smart to take note.

Wearing pink shoes or armbands is nice, but the ultimate show of support is if one team can wear a pink jersey. I know--very football like, but the message would really mean something special.

40% of those who watch football are women. The NFL has had some issues with domestic violence.

You're on to something there Coach. And the color for domestic Violence Awareness is purple. So teams like the Ravens and Vikings should wear purple all the time. Even better, you can sell women's cut jerseys.

Wait a tick, that won't work...

So, what about the players that put "John 3:16" on their eye black? Not knocking them .. but if you're gonna make Heyward stop wearing "Iron Head" because having writing on your eye black violates the uniform policy, then those guys have to stop to. If not, Heyward should sue.

I am fairly certain that same rule already applies to those players as well.

Someone who totally got away with a uniform violation was Troy Polamalu. He had a red cross sewn above the center of his name on his jerseys. It is clear in many pre-game pics that I will make you research on your own, however when it was game time and he let the hair down, it was not visible. I don't think he was ever fined for it.

NFL is petty. I see no big deal in allowing them to wear pink for breast cancer awareness...........

Tweak the rules if need be.

Oh you can wear pink. Just during October which is bunch of bs. Typical NFL publicity stunt that most casual fans buy into because hey it's for a good cause. The thing is women with breast cancer dont just battle breast cancer in October. Breast cancer is a year round illness. Same with supporting the troops, etc. So stupid how the league can market itself

Just tell the owners they can make extra money by selling yet another jersey and most of them will be for it. I feel our beloved game is under assault by the media for injuries and off the field stuff. Something like this could really help. At least I think so.

The NFL as an organization can suck it. If it wasn't for a life of dedication to the Steelers, along with a crazy unexplainable emotional connection to the team, I would just rather prefer to watch hockey.

I hear what you're saying and I like hockey, but the NHL is a garage league. Just the worst.

Blatant corporate shills. Just as many men die from prostate cancer,,,nfl couldn’t give a **** less….already have the male audience. They want sympathetic females to watch, thinking that the nfl is actually doing something for them. Harsh ugly joke.

The whole deal is tied to the Susan G Komen scam. But wait you say, the Susan G Komen Foundation donated $80 Million to cancer research last year. Yep they sure did. They took in $257 Million. Its a big shake down by what is actually a marketing company posing as a charity. Playing on our emotions and hard wiring to protect helpless women from breast cancer (which men can on rare occasions get) while ignoring all other types of cancer. Its all a big work.

If you want to help with actual cancer research contact your local medical university or cancer hospital to make a donation. Fund cancer research directly at the source.

i'm with the NFL on this. It's so easy to criticize but you have to realize that the second they allow Cam to write Iron Head on there, next week there are 20 guys with writing on their eye black, then 50, etc.

As for all the pink for breast cancer. I heard a woman on the radio who said she hates it. She said she likes to watch football to get away from the real world and doesn't want the constant reminder. My mother is the same way. She is a survivor and when commercials for cancer awareness come on, she will change the channel. She doesn't want to be reminded.

I read an article that sort of relates to this, but some feel that this whole months places an emphasis on breasts rather than the person. It does raise awareness, but the overall effectiveness of the campaigns is questionable at best. I would also like to see the same type of effort put forth to other charities that need assistance.

Bottom line is if the NFL didn't profit from the pink month they would not do it....and that is the real sad part about the whole thing. Shame on the NFL for collecting profits off of this.

Yep, their intentions are for profit and to gain female fans.

That's not the way to do it. It's a cheap pandering ploy and I find it offensive. I don't get offended by much, but the fact that the NFL thinks that gaining female fans by discussing boobs for a month is ridiculous. There is more to us than boobs and pink. The female "fans" who buy into the ploy are just as offensive to me. They don't know what a first down is or what a quarterback does, but HEY!!! LOOK!!! PINK!!!!!

It should come as no surprise to anyone that Heyward knew in advance that he was going to be fined but the price he was going to pay was well worth the statement he wanted to make. These guys make big money and many of them spend far more than that on an evening 'on the town'.

He'll probably be fined again for wearing the same thing in today's game. Confirmed by ESPN.

He's taking a stand, and I appreciate that.

I've always been on the CANCER awareness bandwagon, not just breast cancer. It's ALL deadly. I hate ribbons for all the bullshit. How many ribbons can you have for a disease?

Devon Still was never fined, but the league profited from his daughter's cancer. I took the pink pandering as an insult for many years. Consdiering the number of of douche bags who cant keep hands to themselves, father 10+ kids with many women, abuse people/animals in the league without reprecussion, I'll worry about my own ****. Thanks Roger.
