Bud

Highsmith is doing very well for a rookie. If his jump from year 1 to 2 is what Tomlin seems to expect, then he should be good next year and probably better than Bud was in his years 2 and 3.

I hate to play the what ifs game especially with a QB that is teetering on being done. Because no ideas well you don't necessarily want to bank on. If Ben decides to return they should try hard to lock up Bud even if it is a one year venture.

It depends on when he actually comes back from his injury. I have read that they don't expect him to start the season. But, if they could get him cheap on a 1-year prove-it deal and he is healthy, then I would definitely try to do it. Heck, I might even offer him a long term deal at a nice hometown discount that works with our cap and see if he bites. He might since no other team will probably do that.

Bud was never very good without tj. Tj not as good without bud. But still better than bud ever was by himself. Someone gotta get paid. Pay tj. Bye bud.

Ah....we are talkin about the same 'Bud' that played on this team for four years and couldn't find his *** with either hand , let alone an apposing QB. The same 'Bud' that our loyal fans thought was a colossal waste of a draft pick....that 'Bud' .....right ?

Now after a season or so of some success with the addition of a star player opposite him, suddenly shows some promise......that's the guy ?

Sometimes I wonder if some Stiller fans even watch the games or do they just drink beer and scream at the tv for three hours a week.

I hate to get a little chip-py a day after Xmas. But I watch every game and the majority of the time I am not drinking. His beginning has nothing to do with the progress of the last few years. As it was no secret that he was a raw prospect that would take time to develop. The guy has shown improvement with attractive play but that is supposed to be discounted because you don't like his play out of the gates. And you don't know what we have been watching? What are you refusing to see?

Ok so you can also obviously see how much better tj is than bud. I see that.
Of course. But Watt is the best at his position. In the process I know there is a drop off on the other side with Bud not there. In a league that there is a premium on pass rushers it isn't guaranteed that for every Harrison there will be a Woodley. For every Watt we aren't guaranteed a Dupree. So you have a known with Dupree that he complements Watt to a degree that it makes the D click like a fine oiled machine. Who is going to immediately pick up Dupree's slack next year if he isn't here? Not like anyone is lighting it up now for anyone to think yeah we are just fine opposite Watt. Pressure is what takes good to great QBs out of their comfort level. I prefer to not experiment with our pass rush if that can be avoided, and appreciate what we have in Bud. A robin to Watt's batman.

Following the 2017 season, the coaching staff flipped Watt and Dupree to sides of the defense both stated they were more comfortable playing. Although Dupree's overall stats didn't jump right away, he had 6 more QB hits and simply became a guy who felt like he was invisible for most games in 2017 to one who was making his presence felt in 2018. Last season was the first year the coaches decided to use Watt and Dupree at what they do best--rushing the quarterback and stopping the run--and they combined for 26 sacks. It looked like they were on pace to either match or surpass that total this year. At some point some of you need to recognize that players develop at different rates and recognize that Bud developed into a pretty good player.

And bud will leave via free agency and fade into obscurity. With his 5 yrs of development.
I would say that is dependent on what team he goes to. Go to one with a strong pass rush he could complement them as he does Watt. But what we do know is how he plays on our team now.

Harrison, Woodley, Timmons, Hampton, Keisel, Smith, Taylor and Polamalu. all had big contracts and at the time put the Steelers at a high cap hit. that doesn't include Ben, Ward, Parker and Miller. The point being, the cap is just a number, teams can manipulate it however they want to get under it, it's been proven year after year. if the Steelers want Bud in there future plans they will sign him. they can and have paid big money to 2 OLB at the same time.

You must've missed the other posts where I said Dupree had a great year 5 and priced himself out of Pittsburgh. And was having a very good season this year, but he wasn't ever our best player for several games.
Bud is a good player, but he's not great or elite, some team will(not sure now with the injury) pay him elite money.

Why is it so hard to give Dupree ANY credit?

This thread makes me laugh.....

The sooner the Tomlin - Roethlisberger era ends the better. Signing Bud Dupree will have nothing to do with that.

We have an organization that is attached to two of the worst QB talent evaluators in the league (Colbert and Tomlin) and now we are in the "find the next QB" phase of this organization. It is going to get really ugly around here before it gets better. Art Rooney is significantly less of an owner than Dan Rooney and that is a big problem. Maybe we get lucky. But right now "luck" is the only thing we got.

I am 51 years old and I think I have one more "good Steelers" run in my lifetime. And it's going to happen after Art Rooney is gone. After Colbert is gone. And after Tomlin is gone.

Highsmith showed a bull rush leading to the Cam sack and a spin move to end the game on 4th down. As a rookie. Bud still can't do either in his 5th year.

Dupree looked a lot better this year, but he was still just running past the tackle every play. Most of the times he "made a play" were when the D already had the QB/RB rounded up and he came to clean up like Jarvis in college or he was literally unblocked. I can't honestly remember a time where he beat his blocker for a big play. The money we save on him will make this team better.

It's okay to say that Bud is a good football player.

I like Bud but don't believe the Steelers have to keep him. I'm actually ok with developing Highsmith since it appears he is getting better each game. Give him an offseason and see what he brings next year....I'm guessing an even better performance spike.

If you think Bud wouldn't have dominated the newbie today vs. Highsmith you're just delirious...

You're so ****-drunk on Tomlin and the organization that I haven't seen a negative word out of you all season. Talk about delirious.

Once again, Dupree's entire highlight reel includes being unblocked or cleanup. He doesn't beat anyone.

You're the only one with an agenda here. I'm willing to call you out for having Coach so far up your *** that he's in your head 24/7 and now you spend your time quoting both of us and never providing anything of substance. Total fruitcake.

Dupree hasn't beat anyone? Now you are acting like a maroon.
