Bud

With each passing week since his injury, I grow more and more convinced that Bud was a huge part of the attitude of this team and its success on D. It will be a real ******* shame if we don’t find a way to keep him in the Black and Gold...

So Bud had 4 seasons to finally show something, but we're writing Highsmith off already? Dupree's first 4 seasons he had 4, 7, 7, 13 QB hits, Highsmith has 3 and only started 3 games and has the same number of TFL's as Dupree did as a rookie. Highsmith already has more tackles this season than Bud did in either of his first two seasons and is only 9 back of Duprees 3rd season where he started all season.
Dupree was really playing well when he got hurt though, but no way you can have two OLBs at 20+million. Buds good, but the ability to make or not make the Super Bowl weren't because of Bud.
So far, I have not been impressed with Highsmith. He doesn't seem to get off blocks consistently and is not as disruptive as Bud Dupree.
Grant it he's a rookie, but he may need to get stronger in order to deal with left tackles in this league.

I'm going to speculate TJ is going to hit the $28 million per year number. I also don't think Bud will get as big of a contract as some believe--it'll be under $20 million per year.

That troll won't be answering. That was the same **** we heard with Bud. Not every pass rusher can come out of the gates like a Watt. They need time to develop. Bud was raw, Highsmith has a lot to work on. But knowing that kids work ethic I have no doubt next year they will see a better version.

PEOPLE! Get Bud out of your head. He is not staying here. We can't afford him with the new cap. If he is here next year, it is because he signs a one year prove it deal at a discount from what other teams will pay him for one year and then he is gone. Watt will be signed for 20+ million and that will be about it. If anyone else is signed, it will be JuJu and not Bud. Bud is gone!

Yep been saying that since they exercised his 5th year option, but you can't be realistic here, that means you dislike the player. Truth of it is, had he shown more and played like 1st round pick in years 2, 3, and 4 he'd have been signed

If the OL, Ben and WRs play better in the last 4 games, even with the continued loss of starters at LB, then Bud would seem very expendable.

No doubt that he is a signficant contributor, but he just doesnt fit into the go forward puzzle with Cam and Watt (don't forget Minkah) and cap hell.

When? He had 5 sacks, 42 tackles, 8 TFL his 4th season as a full time starter. Highsmith has started 3 games has 1 sack, 31 tackles, 3 tackles for a loss just for comparisons.
You would've given him a long term contract after year 4? He had a great year 5, and he was a free agent, he wasn't signing without testing the market so they had to tag him.

It should now be very obvious to any intelligent Steeler fan that Bud is essential to the quality and character of this team and not re-signing him will end all chances of 1 more ring for Ben. Not sure how we will make it happen, but re-signing him is an absolute must.

Yeah. I never thought I’d say it. But he was having helluva season

The NFL hard cap is a joke. Building through the draft is 100% necessary but then teams are punished for drafting well by having to break up their teams THEY drafted and keep replacing them with younger players. There needs to be some cap incentive/relief for keeping your OWN draft picks. I definitely understand the issue with loading up on expensive outside free agents, but granting a team’s own draft picks with second/third contracts should not come with the full cap hit it entails today. Seems wrong to me.

I heard no one is gonna pay big money for a player coming off a torn ACL. Bud will need a year to prove he's back to pre-injury form.

Bud was having a good year but defininitely not as good as last year. Someone else will pay him more for a 1 year prove it deal than we will. Highsmith will do just fine alongside Watt.

You think? I thought Bud was the best player on the field several games this year. I definitely thought he was playing even better.

Several games? Watt has pretty much been our best player every game with exception to the Buffalo game, especially considering how much he's double teamed even when Dupree was playing. Watt leads the NFL in sacks, TFL, and QB hits.

Bud was never very good without tj. Tj not as good without bud. But still better than bud ever was by himself. Someone gotta get paid. Pay tj. Bye bud.

TJ is good. But the other LBers don’t require the attention as TJ.
Highsmith needs to step it up and help alleviate that pressure.

Bud could hold his own and he and TJ were creating havoc.

Why is it so hard to give Dupree ANY credit?

I thought watt was not good the first raven game although he was probably doing what he was told. He went straight for jackson no matter what. Seemed to run past a lot of tackles and left the edge open. I do not think Watt is better than Dupree, but he compliments watt well. The main question is dupree a late bloomer or is he just playing for a contract now. If it comes down to Dupree and heyward it's a tough choice. To me Heyward is a true Steeler and one of the best D players now. Problem is this is his 10th year i think. Not sure how long he can keep his production up. Bud is younger, but not sure how they can pay watt, dupree, Fitzpatrick, Ben, and Juju. Tuitt seemed to take a nose dive and I'm not sure our salary situation on the oline, but whatever they are being paid its too much. We could get the same production for substantially less $$. Will certainly be an interesting off-season

The new CBA did just that, give incentives to keep drafted players. All contracts are 4 year profiles, based on slotted ranges. 1st round picks have a 5th year option, which is guaranteed for the player and much cheaper than signing a big money FA replacement. It gives the team additional time to work out a long term deal for a player they developed for their system.
