It should now be very obvious to any intelligent Steeler fan that Bud is essential to the quality and character of this team and not re-signing him will end all chances of 1 more ring for Ben. Not sure how we will make it happen, but re-signing him is an absolute must.

I would do everything possible to sign Dupree. Everyone says he can't do it without Watt. Who cares? We wouldn't have to worry about that because you have Watt. It's tough to find good pass rushers and it's even tougher to let one walk away as he's entering the prime of his career.

He won't be on the Steelers next year for two reasons. One he played too shity early to get him on a reasonable long term deal. Two, the Steelers remortgages put them up against the cap.

No. Too much money, coming off a injury. It sucks dude been balling but ****** thing to say it help the Steelers FO make an easy choice.

Agreed he’s a huge key to the defense and I said immediately after his injury that our SB chances went with that knee

That being said, let’s please stop act like our chances of winning anything rest on Ben’s shoulders. That man is just as much a part of the issues we’ve been having as anyone else. It’s time to admit that

The pressure that Bud delivers on every play is a HUGE part of why our defense had been so successful before his injury. I am of the belief that we won’t make it past the first round of the playoffs with the remaining personnel that we have but I do believe that if we can bring back Bud and Hilton and pick up a real starting back in free agency, next year will be the last chance for Ben to get the 3rd ring.

Forget Bud. Too many other needs, including who will replace Ben at QB. The window was closed when Tomlin wasn't shown the door years ago.

Am I missing something here. Highsmith is doing well and generating pressure. Can we afford $25M a year for Bud? We can, but this would be your choice:

Sign Bud for $25M and let Watt walk in 2 years.

Don't sign Bud, and you get the ability to sign Watt and keep him for his career.

That is your choice. Do you want Bud or Watt. We can try and tag him again, because that is the only option you have to attempt to have Bud and Watt play together for one more year, but we all know how players on our team enjoy back to back tags...

Keep in mind that tagging Bud means JuJu walks.

So far, I have not been impressed with Highsmith. He doesn't seem to get off blocks consistently and is not as disruptive as Bud Dupree.
Grant it he's a rookie, but he may need to get stronger in order to deal with left tackles in this league.

He's important but nowhere near as important as Watt or Cam, period, end of story. Highsmith has been playing well and he's a rookie. If Bud wants to come back, it will have to be at a price we can afford and it should come after we have already signed Watt and JuJu. With Bush back next year and Highsmith making a big leap from year 1 to 2, I have no problem if Bud is gone. Sure, it''d be nice to keep him and to keep everyone but it's just not possible even if this coming cap weren't affected by severely reduced revenue due to the China Virus.

With that said, Bud probably won't be ready to start the season next year. He will probably be had on the cheap by someone on a one year prove it contract to see if he is back from his injury. So, we might be able to keep him that way. But, again, Watt and JuJu have to be the priorities. And,, we need a true No. 1 RB either via free agency or the draft. Conner isn't it and we don't have anyone on the roster that I would put there unless McFarland shows tremendous development from year 1 to 2. Then, you might be able to have him at No. 1 with Snell at No. 2 and Samuels as No. 3.

Very simple algorithm here. Bud + Steelers = Steelers - Heyward. They could have taken Heyward's money and given it to Bud. That is the argument to have.

I'd rather have Heyward than Bud if that is my choice as well.

What we saw in Buffalo was less about not having Bud and more about not having Williams and Haden

Surprisingly I don't think the ILBs were the problem last game. Williamson and Allen did well, so I was surprised they weren't a liability. Even UG3 had a few snaps. Though I agree Vince would have had more of an impact rushing the passer.

Highsmith has taken what, two games worth of full reps? Of course he's not as disruptive as Bud Dupree. There are things to be encouraged about though.

The strength comment I agree is his biggest issue now, but like you said, he's a rookie, and that's going to improve with time in the NFL. I think he looks world's better than Bud did at this point in their careers and that's what's encouraging.

Once again.... next season if tget keep the cap at 175 million as planned, a metric **** ton of players are getting cut... we will find a couple viable cheap replacements for anyone who leaves... it won’t be an issue

The Steelers way, before they lost it, was to develop guys behind guys so when one got too pricey the young guy could fill in..

1. I'll take Cam at 16 per, over Bud at 18-20 per.
2. Why would Bud take what we gave Cam? That's 16 per year, some team will offer him alot more than that.
3. You have Watt and Minkah coming up.
4. If Bud would've played better in years 2-4 he'd have been signed long term.

Though I essentially agree with you, its really hair splitting. What I'm saying is that if you wanted Bud you had to part with Heyward and if they wanted to get that done it might have cost a few million more per year, but it was doable.

Cam's contract only had a signing bonus of 17 and guaranteed money of 26 million, this is Cam's second big contract here, this would be Bud's first chance at big money, he'd never take that signing bonus and guaranteed money,

I didn't analyze every play of Allen at ILB but when I did see him, he was playing very well. And, this is a guy who is not a natural ILB. I have a feeling he might get more playing time there. Dude is fast and isn't afraid to hit someone. Although, at one point, they did start putting him back at CB.

No way will the cap drop that much. The NFLPA wouldn't have it because there are gonna be high-priced veterans cut all over the place and there aren't gonna be as many big contracts. They're more likely to "borrow" future cap increases to minimize any cap change next year.
