Bud Dupree Leaves Representation before Officially Hitting Free Agency

Steelers don't do that, they signed Tuitt heading into his final year of his rookie deal. They won't let Watt play out all 5 years

Not so sure about Watt. If the new CBA goes through it makes the 4th and 5th year option guaranteed. Most teams will take advantage of this.

Oh man I don’t want to franchise Bud at 16 mil. He’s not worth that and it really ties our hands. There are some potential F/A’s that would be far less than what Bud will want or what the Tag will impose.

I'm not that worried about keeping him. Jason Worilds had one good season too.

They don't want their players getting to test free agency, that's why they sign them before their final year of their contract. Troy, Ben, Heath, Pouncey, Woodley, Decastro, Cam, Tuitt probably some I can't think of all signed new contracts before finishing their rookie deals

The 5th year option started in 2011 so Cam and Decastro would have been the first options. It was early in the rule, and when we got to our best first rounder we drafted since 2011 (Shazier), he was optioned.

Woodley and Tuitt were a 2nd rounders and not eligible for 5th year options.

Here's the current CBA if you want to read up on it: https://nfllabor.files.wordpress.com/2010/01/collective-bargaining-agreement-2011-2020.pdf

If you pay attention to football in general , it’s not uncommon for guys to show up in a contract year.
He did pay attention. If you paid attention in general you would have seen his steady improvement year to year. So sure guys show up in their contract year that is not a rocket science of a statement unknown to all, but in this case the player gradually improved. You have a decent amount of ignorant viewpoints perhaps you need to start paying better attention.

They still signed before their final year is my point, the second round guys. Shazier was injured before his 2nd contract, they were going to sign him long term after 2017

I see Watt not sniffing free agency in a similar manner. No way that one gets away.

Wrong. Shazier's 5th year option was inacted before his 4th season, which is how the 5th year option works (a year before their last season). And it's why the Steelers paid him $8M when he was learning how to walk.

They could still and would've negotiated a long term deal, similar to what the Rams did with Gurley, new deal but it went effect after his rookie deal

Colbert is out there saying the Steelers want Bud to play his entire career as a Steeler. I sure hope they don't break the bank on him.

Agree, I've said I'd try to get a long term deal at 13-14per max.

Coryea still chasing down anything Bud. He's going to get paid and hopefully they can get a long term deal done with him

Am I not allowed to agree with a poster? That's exactly what I said 13-14 million per would mean a long term deal, not sure what issue you're having here.

he in colle was a dual DE/LB so it was a ad=justing coverage and rushing standing up that he has improved each year the angels he rushes from. last year he was always a half secdd late from a sack this year he turned those into sacks and was solid vs the run .

he turned the corner well last year. Coryea says because he did it in a contract year that he shouldn't get paid. Except the guy was injured in 2 of those 5 seasons and didn't even start his rookie year. He's earned his 2nd deal with the team

He said the same thing about Bell.

If they do sign him, it won't be done at the expense of losing some of their superstars. It's how the team operates and this situation won't be any different. If they can make it work, it'll happen. If not, it won't.

I don't know.....we have made numerous players the top paid players at their position quite often. Not many home town discounts anymore.

No way do they make Dupree the top paid at the position with Watt on the horizon. They also want to sign Cam this offseason and I can't see them paying Dupree more than him.

Excellent point. They're going to offer him a very team-friendly new contract (or tag him if they absolutely have to, which I'm still not sure they'll do in the end). This one is a really difficult situation the Steelers find themselves in IMO.

Maybe they won't make him the very top paid LBer. I can see top 5 money. We paid 2 LBers top $$$ in the past. It could happen again. Dupree would be stupid to take anything less.

The injury excuse hasn't worked for Conner or JuJu. So he couldn't beat out Jarvis Jone when he was a rookie, then he was hurt 2 of the following 4, not a great track record. I think you're obsessed with me, you keep bringing me up in this thread. Please show me where I said he shouldn't get paid????? I've said 1,000 times, 13-14 per would be the max I'd go with him. His low QB hits, everyone says, "well he played a ton of coverage before this season", yet he has 9 PD's for his career, Watt had 8 this season, playing the same position Dupree couldn't handle so they put him at ROLB. You seem perfectly fine if they over pay for him.
