By CJ Lester SteelerNation.com One of the dominoes waiting to fall this off-season is OLB Bud Dupree. Dupree had 11.5 sacks, 68 tackles, 17 QB hits, 4 forced fumbles, and led the team with 16 TFL (tackles for loss) last season. Liz Mullen of Sports Business Journal has reported that soon-to-be free agent Bud Dupree […]

He's just getting a new agent

Steelers LB Bud Dupree, who is set to become an unrestricted free agent, has left CAA Sports.
The NFLPA's 5-day waiting rule is in effect, so he cannot sign with a new agency at this time.

The Steelers said keeping Dupree in 2020 is a “high priority,” and the time frame for teams to use the franchise tag runs from Feb. 27-March 10. If the Steelers use the franchise tag, which is worth $16.2 million, on Dupree, they would have until July 15 to sign him to a long-term contract.

General manager Kevin Colbert said last week the Steelers would “have a better idea” about whether to tag Dupree as it gets closer to the March 10 deadline.

“We have a good idea about where things stand at this point, but we don’t have concrete information as to whether or not we will tag,” Colbert said. “We always say that while the tag is available, it’s something we will consider, but we’re not anywhere near done with our final free agency preparation.”

If I’m making the decision to resign Bud, the question I would ask myself is would Watt be as productive without Bud on the other side?

Why wouldn't he? Watt saw more double teams than Dupree, but Watt was tied for first in the NFL in QB pressures, while Dupree was 29th, hell Watt as a rookie didn't play in all 16 games had almost as many QB pressures as a rookie as Bud did this season.

If he ditched his rep that means he's gonna sign the franchise tag....to me anyway.

Watt is WAY better than Bud, period, end of story. Watt is the type of player that elevates the play of those around him. Bud is not.

Exactly, Watt is the type of player that deserves to be paid as the highest or close to it at his position, Bud is not.

Possible. Or maybe he wanted an agent he felt would do better at finalizing and maximizing the contract. That tag would handcuff the team somewhat. I hope he can be signed to a reasonable contract before having to lock the tag in.

I'd give him max a 13 per deal, but the problem there is that there will probably be teams with a ton of cap space out there that would give him 17+per and a much bigger guarantee than we can.

Oh man I don’t want to franchise Bud at 16 mil. He’s not worth that and it really ties our hands. There are some potential F/A’s that would be far less than what Bud will want or what the Tag will impose.

I read today that Leonard Floyd and Charles Harris will be F/As. I just worry Colbert and Tomlin are too focused with signing Bud and overpaying him.

I suspect that the situation is a bit more complicated than sign him or not sign him. No doubt the entire cap is like a spider web. One person's contract impacts what is available for others so I suspect there are conversations with several players (e.g., Vance and Hargraves). I can't imagine what Colbert's spreadsheet looks like.

They have their work cut out for them this year with the restrictions due to the CBA in it's last year currently. If they can retain Bud and still bring in some upgrades Colbert should be crowned.

I hope he wants to represent himself. Pocket the extra 10%, since he already made up his mind to stay with the Steelers.

The Steelers are in a spot. They have nothing behind Bud and are pretty much locked into franchising him. Anyone comparable (and probably less productive) is going to cost a ton and they didn't adequately develop anyone to step in. This is something they used to do so well. Gotta keep the pipeline full at OLB.

I doubt it. They have to wait so long after they can one agent if I read correct. One will surfacing soon. Not that I don't like the way you are thinking...

Meh this is actually more commonplace than reported... not even sure why its a story.... players sign with an agent out of school with minor competition anymore... agencies tend to target first time ufas harder and offer incentives to sign with them cause its big money on that contract...

They didn't have anyone adequately developed, including Bud heading into this past season really, so you never know what someone will do given the chance, especially opposite Watt. I do agree though, they will tag him.
