Bucs fire Lovie Smith

Has any college guy got it done since Jimmy Johnson? Pete Carroll was an NFL guy who went to college, and then came back. Spurrier failed, despite spending a decade in the NFL as a player. Saban? FAIL! Chip Kelly? FAIL!

Barry Switzer*, Tom Coughlin, and I think you do have to include Pete Carroll...

Saban's fail has more to do with Danny Kannell's idiot father than his own coaching. Chip Kelly didn't exactly "fail"...he took a 4-12 team and made them division champs the next two years running. Jim Harbaugh was also a tremendous success in San Francisco before Trent Balke decided to go all Jerry Jones on him.

There've actually been more NFL retread failures than CFB coaches moving up failures

I hadn't considered that they wanted a specific replacement.

I wasn't sold on Lovie when he came here. I know he has had some success, but he had stepped into a huge pile, I wasn't sold on anybody improving that lot anytime soon. Lovie seemed to have been building a good core of players and the team was improving. Too bad he wasn't given more time.

I agree with you on Lovie not getting enough time. The one big thing about the Steelers, Giants, etc that you hear over and over is stability... Coaching stability is HUGE in building a winning program and maintaining it...Tampa will now have a 3rd coach in 5 years. You can't do that.

I will bet that if we win vs the bengals, Smith is here giving us a hand before the season's end... the guy is a good friend of Tomlin.

How about I bet that if we win, he's helping us by becoming the Bengals head coach on Monday.

What if lovie smith ends up as the Brown's hc? He would at least make them competitive. We don't want that

I wouldn't wish that on him. I doubt he takes a job that ****** anyway.

If he doesn't go back to being a coordinator, I think SF is probably the best fit. They're blowing it all up and starting over, and Lovie seems to excel at that. Only problem is, Jed York thinks he's Al Davis and will meddle at every turn.

I'm not sure about him having to learn a new offense, as their offensive coordinator is speculated to be the favorite for the job.

You're absolutely right. Turns out, Koetter is the reason they fired Lovie. They didn't want to lose him to another team, screwing up Winston's progress.

What a mess it will be if Koetter leaves anyway.

Would be awesome if he'd wanna pull a Munchak and come coach our DBs or LBs, but I won't hold my breath lol

He's an excellent coach and I want him nowhere near Cleveland

Wonder if the Bucs are shootin' for Coughlin...

Reports have surfaced that the Buccaneers chose to fire Smith because the Miami Dolphins were reportedly interested in Koetter for their head coach position, and they did not want to lose him, according to Buccaneers reporter Rick Stroud.
The Dolphins aren't the only team interested in Koetter, as the San Francisco 49ers have reportedly requested permission to interview him on Tuesday but have not heard an answer, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Stupid move to fire Lovie..........a proven coach with a Super Bowl to his resume....dumping him for an assistant with no head coaching experience ?

If Fisher were canned in STL, I could see Lovie there with the Rams.....he coached the defense there back in the day

I don't have any problem with the move if the idea is to promote the OC and keep Winston in the same system. If you use the #1 pick on a QB and like the progress he is making, the worst thing you can do is change systems on him.
