Agent: Missed tests the main issue for Bryant
Posted by Jason Mackey

Martavis Bryant is not facing a yearlong suspension from the NFL because of failed drug tests, one of his two agents, Brian Fettner, told DKPittsburghSports.com tonight. Bryant never showed up to multiple tests because of “depression and coping issues.”

“He didn’t fail a test,” Fettner said. “He missed tests. But a miss is a failure to comply.”

Fettner did not know how many tests Bryant missed or why he missed them but said that, as far as he knew, Bryant is not currently smoking marijuana.

“He had a life insurance test three weeks ago,” Fettner said. “He came out clean.”

Bryant and his agents, Fettner and Tom Santanello, are appealing the suspension, on the idea that the tests were not failed; they were never taken in the first place.

“It’s a failure to comply with the tests,” Fettner said. “It wasn’t failed tests. That’s what the appeal is about. We respect the rules, but we feel the one-year suspension is profoundly harsh.”

A USA Today story published earlier Saturday, quoting Fettner, said Bryant would be checking into rehab and undergoing evaluation for his issues.

While that’s still the goal, Fettner said that will no longer happen by Sunday.

“Not for sure (Sunday),” Fettner said. “But very soon.”

Bryant is a repeat offender who missed the first four games of the season because he was suspended. Those failed tests fell into both categories, Fettner said — drug use and missed tests.

The reasons Bryant has not showed for multiple drug tests remain unclear, Fettner said.

“People who have issues with depression and coping and those things put their head in the sand,” Fettner said. “They do things that are inexplicable and kind of self-destructive and deal with things later.”

Fettner said that Bryant isn’t a bad guy and believes the punishment should be adjusted because of unique circumstances.

“Look, it defies all logic,” Fettner said. “This is a really hard-working guy who’s a good guy. I’ve represented a lot of bad guys. I know what a bad guy is when I see him. There are plenty of them. He’s not a party guy. He’s not a bad guy. He never gets arrested. He’s just not that guy. For whatever it is, he’s an introvert. He’s struggling with issues.”

Bryant wants to get to the bottom of this, Fettner said. They’re willing to accept whatever punishment the NFL ultimately doles out but hopes it will reconsider because of what Bryant is dealing with.

“Honestly, it’s really sad. It’s heartbreaking,” Fettner said. “He’s so talented. For whatever it is, whether it’s a mental block, he has trouble coping or whatever, he’s put himself in this position.

“We’re not acknowledging that he smoked marijuana. We’re acknowledging that he missed the tests. He missed some tests. For that, that’s against the rules. We get that. Now we have to find out why.

Missed tests same as failing or worse. They were fully aware of this.

Yep the rules were known...... Not sure the Steelers will buy what he and his agent are cooking.

If Bryant can show he missed the tests because of a medical issue like clinical depression he'll have a good legal case to fight any suspension should it come.

this is true, but if he has clinical depression there are bigger things at stake than a job... The NFL probably will want to handle this with kids gloves though... they cant let him off the hook or it sets precedent, they cant punish him for a medical condition

Uh huh.... I get it. He was sad. Poor guy.
**** outta here

Depression isn't just about being sad. It shouldn't rule out him being punished because he broke the rules. But to try to make it out like it is a black and white situation is equally wrong. It could just be his agent making excuses but if it is clinical depression the guy probably needs the break from football to sort his life out.

Pretty sure they are playing up the Depression angle as a last resort to file an appeal because they know they are cooked.

On the other hand if it's proven true Bryant's attorneys could walk all over Goodell in court. Look what Brady's attorneys did to Goodell and that wasn't even a medical issue.

Bryant messed up. Plain and simple as that. I do think this may be it for him with the Steelers

He wasn't a party guy, or a troublemaker. he was self-medicating. WHY?

he spent all his money on weed in the process ate about 20 bags of corn chips

realizing he was broke, depression set in

so he had to borrow some money to self medicate by smoking some more trees

now his career is up in smoke

Medical condition or NOT, he misswed a test. Miss a test is same as a possitive. MY daughter is a Child Protection Service agent. She sees all kinds of "drug" tests excuses, even depression. There is NO 2nd chances. As for Bryabt, he KNEW this going in. MISS equals a FAIL. I have human compassion, of coarse, but this time off will let him get the help he needs if he is TRUELY depressed. Playing football won't allow the time for the help he needs / drugs / fine tuniong / counseling / ect.. I'm sorry but he was a risk and has failed. BEST to him and get the help needed.

Salute the nation

Yeah we had a nurse at work who failed to show up at an AA meeting and she got fired and lost her license. If bryant is depressed it didn't just start and someone could have helped him long ago. Now he may be depressed, but this seems like a quick cop out.

Depression, obsessive disorder, the inability to leave the house or do simple everyday stuff is all related. Can't process stress in a normal way... Maybe there is more to this.... I hope he gets his head together.... And I think a year off is xcessive when in Oregon, Washington, Colorado they are using pot to legally treat disorders just described.

The suspensions of bell and Bryant likely cost us the superbowl last year and this will probably cost us a shot this year. I cant ******* wrap my head around how this ******* happens. You make millions, hire someone to keep your head on ******* straight. Hell many stillers fans would gladly do the job for free I'm guessing.

Then why is he checking into rehab? You don't go to drug rehab to treat depression, you go there to treat addiction

******* Funyuns!

And checking into rehab is somehow related to depression too, right? Kid ****** up and he's screaming down the Justin Blackmon path. See ya later Martavius, we barely knew ye

The story specifically states "to check into rehab to undergo evaluation for depression" And you obviously barely knew him you can't even get his name right. lol
