Actually if Ben wasnt locked in on Brown i think Bell beat the LB across his face and could have picked up the first with a good pass. The vertical routes on that side of the field left Bell one on one

Hey I'm all about the players executing but it is the coach's job to put the players in position to succeed. This season I don't think on 3rd and short they have done that. We are horrible in that area. Empty set shotgun formation almost every time. Mind boggling at times. In my opinion anyways.
I agree i hate it. But theyve been doing it since Arians. Two constants Ben and Tomlin..so i guess they like it. I hate it
Rogers ran an out 10 yards down field, James ran an in 15-20 yards downfield, everyone ******* about Ben throwing long on 3rd and short, we just ran a play with the shortest route by a we was a 10 yd out when we need 2, the TE ran 15-20 yards downfield, hell the ball was almost to AB when James made his break.

Because maybe Bell was supposed to be the primary Target and Brown and Bryant routes were clear outs.

Maybe. So you still have only one player running a shot route on 3rd and short. Coryea's point from the beginning. Everyone (or almost everyone) running down the field. This has been going on for a bit. Coach's job to change it. Ben will throw to he wants to but if he has more than 1 short route option on third and short ...he just might start throwing more just for the first instead of the BIG play.

MAKES perfect sense but what he'll do we know???? I mean obviously our coaching staff has spent many hours in the lab and have dissected the involvement of our WR corps and determined the routes to be run. In order to maximize our stregnth we need to take the opportunities presented to us. With the routes we run it make a popcorn effect as to who should cover who. Needless to say we didn't capitalize with the oppertunity given to us, we will have to do better,.......obviously.
Sometimes I wonder if situational football and our coaching staff are polar opposites.......... HUGE win regardless of play calling / execution / plan / total win for our boys in Black & Gold.

Doesnt thst happen on just about every passing play. The routes are designed to stress the defense. Whats not supposed to happen is your QB locking on one route
Reminds me of the good old times when the best plays on 3rd and short (or close to the goalline) were either:
- Bettis up the gut
- Hines on a super quick slant
Both were practically unstoppable. Both could be run from the same formation to keep the D guessing.
But yeah, what do I know, I´m just coach coaching here...

Coach's job to create plays that work. They haven't been so far this season on 3rd and short. Going with an empty set on third and short has been a BIG fail. Our coaches need to make some adjustments. Or we will see more of the same the rest of the season.
I'm pretty sure Bell isn't the first read there, just by the way he runs his route, it was half speed.
Whatever the play worked, but it's still 3rd and 2 and the play call is empty set(when we are killing the on the ground) and designed to be thrown 15-20 yards downfield, that's the design of the play.

Ever watch the Patriots on 3rd and short, hardly ever does any receiver go more than 10 yards down field. They almost always use a rub/pick between the slot and wideout of TE and slot that usually makes for an easy 3-4 yard completion. That is play calling and situational awareness. I hate the Pats, but if Tomlin and Haley had 1/10 of their football knowledge we would be unstoppable.
Pretty sure we tried that last week vs the Jaguars. James didnt rub anyone and Bell was tackled short of the goalline

Last week, news broke that San Francisco linebacker Navarro Bowman had asked the 49ers for a trade.
A day later, he had been released after San Francisco couldn’t find a suitable offer and decided to cut bait with a player that didn’t want to be part of yet another rebuilding process.
Don’t think for a second that didn’t precipitate the news that broke Sunday night that receiver Martavis Bryant’s agent didn’t have that in mind when he leaked out to some choice national media sites that his client had asked the Steelers for a trade.
And you had better believe that is exactly what happened.
Bryant hasn’t been happy with his role this season. He’s not getting a lot of looks from Ben Roethlisberger. And when he does, they have failed to hook up consistently.
But Bryant hasn’t pouted or sulked. He’s continued to work hard - though he did admit to going to the coaching staff recently to ask what he needed to do to get out of this funk.
And there’s nothing wrong with that. Players do that all the time. It’s part of the process.
After Bryant played a season-low 33 snaps and got just three targets that were turned into two catches in Sunday’s win against Kansas City, the bet here is that his agent, Tom Santanello, sprung into action.
After seeing Bowman get set free by the 49ers, you can bet the lightbulb went off in Santanello’s head. He could float the rumor that Bryant had asked for a trade and perhaps either get the ball rolling on that or get the Steelers to release his client to become a free agent.
That could be especially lucrative considering some of the injuries at the receiver position and how many teams just don’t have anyone at the position.
That might work in San Francisco. It wasn’t going to work in Pittsburgh.
First, Bryant has very little trade value, at least right now.
He’s one strike away from being suspended, quite possibly, forever. What is a team going to give up for a player, even a talented one, who is facing that?
And Bryant also has struggled at times this season, as well.
Finally, the Steelers stuck with Bryant through four and year-long suspensions and didn’t release him. There is no way they were going to do so now.
Bryant, for his part, laughed off the rumor, saying he wanted to be with the Steelers.
So did his teammates.
As for this being a potential distraction, don’t believe that for a second.
Guys go to the coaches all time time about not being happy with their role or asking how to improve their game. And agents talk to teams about their clients all the time, as well.
Think James Harrison was happy with his role the previous couple of weeks?
But you fight through those things and move on. And the Steelers will move on from this.
Bryant’s role was what it was Sunday because the Steelers wanted to run the ball. And JuJu Smith-Schuster is a better blocker than Bryant.

I kind of like the idea of Bryant asking to be traded (but secretly isn't wink-wink)...
If we play our cards right...some team might offer us a ridiculous return for him...and I would seriously consider it, if I were the Steelers..
Bryant is not in our "long-term" plans anyway..

If it were true, the Steelers likely response would be, "give us your best this season and we'll consider it in the off season".
Not sure why the agent would want him elsewhere, until he gets his value up. A contributor on a Super Bowl winning team

That article made a good point Ant. JuJu is getting the snaps in single WR sets. It's the right move, because like Hines before him, he's not only the best blocking WR on the team, but he also has the 2nd/3rd best hands on the team (He and Eli have excellent hand positioning, though JuJu uses his body better and has a bigger catch radius).
Bryant is losing those snaps. He's a big body, and should be able to block shorter DBs, he just doesn't do it as consistently as JuJu, and is losing those snaps because of it.
Now moving forward, this is a trend that will also drop Bryant's snaps on 2 receiver sets, if we're committing to a run first game plan. JuJu will start to take some snaps in this set as well.
