I've seen threads over the past years saying how bad Tomlin is, and after that Baltimore loss, I was ready to have him and Haley fired too. I ******* hate Baltimore, so I'm not rational when we lose to that ******* over-rated team. But I digress, I have seen Arians touted for the amazing job he's doing now that he's a HC (How's that working out right about now, btw?) As well as the cheesehead in charge, who isn't exactly lighting it up this year. Then there is that cheating son of a ***** up in NE. He's about the only guy who really does it on a year in, year out basis, but I wouldn't want him coaching this team if we had Steve Spurrier as our current HC. Hell, I've even seen people here clamor for Rex, and I like Rex, I think he's a ****** HC, but I like the guy.

So, after the next loss, whenever that is, it will be interesting to see the screaming about how bad Tomlin is again, and at some point there will be a new darling (remember a few years back when the Eagles were GENIUS for trying something NEW in the nfl, and this board was full of Chip Kelly nuthuggers.

I've been around long enough to know a good thing when I see it. Tomlin is a good coach. He's not a great coach, but I feel he's a very good coach, one thing that hasn't EVER happened, even after an 0-4 start, he has never lost this team. That's saying something.

Tomlin is a good coach but make no mistake about it, THIS team this year he came VERY close (the closest in his career) to losing this team. He has his flaws but also has some strengths too. One thing is he needs to figure out how to relieve Bell somewhat. Running him until the wheels fall off isn't the answer. TOMLIN's strengths and weaknesses have been debated hear MANY a many times. Right now the team has the arrow pointed in the right direction and are using their above the neck abilities. Sprinkle some popcorn and we are all satisfied.

Salute the nation

so yeah I'm not a big fan of Tomlin's. You are right though in that He is Good, not great. BUT, being nitpicky at what you said, I would say he lost the team that time when he was talking about unleashing hell in December,, they folded like a card table.

Well, they continued to stink it up, but I didn't see them mail it in. They just couldn't finish a game to save their damn souls, that was the year we blew leads of like 21 points, etc, freaking painful.

Fisher is available, if we act fast! ;) hahahahahaha.

Interesting Tomlin comment

I have been saying for years now, that Tomlin doesn't really motivate and keep the team focused, but rather, he just kind of lets those areas run their course. If the players don't get focused and motivated on their own, then it won't happen.

This would go a long way of explaining why they often lay an egg vs. bad teams. For the most part, players, left on their own, do not get focused enough when they feel they are playing a bad team. If you have a team full of veteran leaders, this won't bare its ugly head as much. This was the case in 2008 and, to a degree, in 2010. But as strong leaders retired, we saw a downgrade in focus, accountability and discipline. Without the Aaron Smiths, Ryan Clarks, Hamptons, Farriros, Wards, etc. a hole developed in that area.

So, when MT was asked yesterday why the Steelers increase in focus and performance the last few weeks, he said, "It's that time of year." To me, that says that he is still relying on the players themselves to be focused and motivated, as opposed to him doing the job. Let's just hope the players themselves got this. Indications are they do, Ben's brain farts yesterday notwithstanding.

One thing is for certain.....we always catch fire during the last half of the season under Tomlin. This season was setting up to go nicely until Miami and Bens injury and then the wheels came off. Either the defense couldn't stop anybody and the offense played respectable, or the defense played amazing and the offense **** the bed. We are finally playing well on both sides of the ball. I just hope everyone remains healthy. If we make postseason this will be the first time we do so with Bell healthy. Hes never played in a playoff game.

Tomlin is a good coach, but flawed. There aren't many, if any, perfect coaches out there. I think it seems to be the areas he is flawed that makes him a frustrating coach to watch at points. Things us fans normally take for granted like simple end of half clock management, when it's appropriate to go for 2, and just beating the bad teams seem to be Tomlin's Kryptonite.

For example, the gameplan was on point this week both offensively and defensively. Only Ben's bad throws kept the game from being a blowout. It's when we go to Miami who couldn't stop the run and come out slinging the rock which makes you scratch your head. The inconsistency is what is frustrating about him but such is the NFL. When he's right and prepares us appropriately, we can beat anyone...when we come in with a head scratching gameplan, we can also lose to almost anyone.

With that said, props to MT for the challenge on the Watkins catch. I did not see that real-time and as quickly as he threw the flag, it made it seem like he actually saw the drop without needing someone to tell him to challenge. The announcers were confused why he even threw the flag until the replay was shown. Sometimes he has some questionable challenges but he deserves props for one most people wouldn't have even thought twice about.

Tomlin's a top 10 coach, but I wouldn't allow this win streak to change your opinion of the guy. The Steelers were supposed to be one of the top teams in the NFL and they are still fighting their way back from a four-game losing streak to get near the top of the AFC. I fully expect this team to win the division and make a deep run. I'll be pretty disappointed if they don't.

I can't agree that the offensive gameplan was on point. Buffalo is eighth in the NFL in pass defense, but was allowing over 116 ypg on the ground coming into the game, which ranked them somewhere in the mid-20s (they've now fallen to 28th after the Steelers dropped 240 on them). Yet the original plan was to come out and pass. In a swirling snowstorm, no less. Ben threw the ball 8 times on the first drive, which ended with an interception. Bell ran it once, for 16 yards.

They ended the half with 39 plays. 26 were passes, a 1:2 run/pass ratio. Ben threw two picks. Bell ran it 13 times for 77 yards and 2 touchdowns, averaging nearly 6 yards per carry. That pass-happy approach wasn't head-scratching to you?

Now, I will give the coaching staff credit for eventually adjusting once the second half began, but it certainly didn't take rocket science to figure out that Bell was firing on all cylinders, tearing up a weak rush defense, and Ben wasn't performing well in the adverse conditions versus a team who was in the top ten against the pass to begin with.

Thing is they still put themselves into a must win scenario, with little to no breathing room.

This team is talented.

It is more to do at this time of the year is how will everything unfold.

Because coming up just short, or winning one playoff game and done...won't cut it.

My stance on Tomlin being a average or slightly above average coach hasn't changed.

At the same time this is the time of year the focus is on just getting that one week win. A game at a time.

As far as Tomlin goes that will work itself out one way or another.

My hope is he proves me wrong. I would love that.

A lot.

To do that? just keep winning, all I care about.........

Tomlin still looks all fun and games when winning but just as Sunday showed when Buffalo came back he had that lost look. Not sure he is the one motivating or getting this team ready. Watching Haley and Ben , was way more interaction than Tomlin with any of the players. You see Haley looking at Ben and saying my fault was nice to see. Tomlin I hope you see how important these three games are and be the head coach and have game plans that work against these teams. Prove us all wrong we all want it.

How do you explain Noll being a good coach when he had almost the same philosophy about motivation ?
