Boykin open to returning

You mean like Cortez? Oh wait.....

Heh. Good point.

I just get a kick out of how guys view players. Brandon Boykin seems to get some love on here, and I don't quite know why. He was OK, nothing special. He was not playing well at all at practice, he couldn't stay on his feet. That seems to be confirmed now by some of the writers as previously it was hinted at. If I am coaching, i ain't playing a guy in a game who sucks in practice. I know, I know. Blake sucked in games. But at least there was some hope there, perhaps. He at least showed well in practice, maybe.

But back to the way guys view players. Boykin gets love for very little. Jarvis Jones gets none for very little. Why the difference? Jones could cure cancer, help an old lady across the street, save a puppy and get 8 sacks and guys would still hate on him.

Boykin wants to start on the outside therefore he will be looking for that type of money and opportunity to be a starter on the outside. So in all likelihood consider him gone. What a waste this will have turned out to be if and when he leaves.

I don't think Boykin did very little though. When he was actually on the field, I thought he was just as good as Gay in coverage, and was more of a playmaker in terms of breaking up passes and tackling than everyone else other than Gay as well. Sure maybe not a shut down guy or a pick 6 guy, but he wasn't getting burnt regularly like Blake and even Cockrell to a lesser extent.

I doubt a slot corner that couldn't get on the field for half the year would warrant a $6M salary. His value is somewhere in the $2-3M range, and I take him for that!

Corners always get dramatically overpaid. If you look at his metrics he's a highly rated player. I'm strongly doubting he'll go for less than 5-6M per year. If it's only 3M you obviously break down his door with a pen. But looking at the market someone will pay him well.

Boykin was outplaying the guy ahead of him on the depth chart.
Jones was not outplaying the guy behind him on the depth chart.

The 2nd sentence I agree with.

The first one I dispute. Again, I know Blake had his struggles, but it isn't like Boykin went in there and did much. So outplaying would be a reach in that situation.

Don't know what he's worth on the open market but I definitely feel that he's a guy who can make plays for us with more playing time. Can't imagine they're going to play Golson a ton in his first year on the field. He will be backing someone up. Better to have him behind Boykin so he can get some reps.

Aw, ****. I will just quit beating around the bush. I know I'll get flamed, but here goes...

I think Boykin is a favorite of the anti-Tomlin crowd because to them he is an example of Tomlin's ineptitude, playing Blake over him. It really can't be for his play, because he didn't do that much.

Just know, I got frustrated with Blake as much as anybody. But I bet a number of you guys have coached, like I have. You have that kid on your team, maybe isn't as talented, but is a scrapper, works hard in practice and so on. It's tough not to play the kid. I keep thinking of that when I think of Blake playing over Boykin.

I'm no anti tomlin, I just saw the guy make plays after he got a chance to be on the field, pass deflecteds in important situations, open field tackles, all in limited time

Wow, I didn't know this was even a question. To my eyes, Boykin clearly outperformed Blake when he got the chance to play. *shrug*

How? When was Boykin ever manned up on the other teams best receiver? When he finally got to play, he had his role in the slot. I don't recall him on the outside like Blake consistently was. Before a comparison is made, would they not both have to be in the same situations?

This is no defense of Blake, though. I just do not want them wasting money on Boykin that they maybe could spend on a better player. If Boykin is the only option, I guess fine. But I would try to do better before I commit any money to him.

Well, you didn't constantly hear his name as the victim of completions or long touchdowns, for one thing. He didn't miss but maybe one tackle that I remember. Blake missed ... lots.

I don't think anyone is saying Boykin is the greatest, but he's very competent. And on that defense, competence in the secondary is a pretty big step up.

You know, several years back one of the sports mags had several anonymous players write for them about what really goes on in sports, and one of the footbball players came right out and said that the vast majority of them dont give a rats *** about winning, just getting paid. Its a fan myth that most players want or need to win... If we pay Boykin more he will stay.. If not he will leave. Its that simple

Meh blake was brutal in every stat... Boykin had a nice rating for two tears in a row both in coverage and tackling according to profootballfocus. Boykin is at worse maybe the best slot coverage guy in the nfl... He didnt look bad when he did get shuffled to outside coverage either. We can use more than 2 quality cbs... Some of the best years this d has had was when quality guys like Willie williams manned the slot...

He was nothing special. I just don't see what you guys see in Brandon Boykin. If they are going to spend money, spend it on a guy who may make a difference.

When you're surrounded by mediocrity it can be easy to stand out. But in this case I don't think that applies.....Boykin's name was only said when he did well which might not have been often because of his snap count. The guy's a baller.

Again, snap count difference. Boykin - season 31, JJ got more than that in the Ravens game.
