While I would argue easily the coaches had their chance and deserved to be fried, the optics are hard. If Rooney fired Tomlin, the politics would hit a boil. To get rid of Tomlin I'm 100% fine with Buffalo's Frazier. The man can coach defense, and Tomlin can not. Check out what he did with Buffalo's defense. Now this is good coaching:

Frazier just happens to be African American, so Rooney's conscience, if he is wondered about his father rule, would be clear. Worry not Art jr, Tomlin will get another job quickly, so your really adding an extra man for the Rooney rule. Football is the type of sport where you can not afford to be baised as its a complete team game and if one man doesn't pull his weight, the entire team can suffer....at any position, and this includes long snapper. In our case the head coach is underachieving. Time to get cool shades a new zip code to live in.

This is just plain stupid. The Rooney's deciding to fire or not fire Tomlin would have nothing to do with the fact he's an African-American. Check your calendar, it's not the 1950's. It may still be in the minds of many, but not the Rooney's.

I seriously doubt Tomlin getting fired would cause any kind of ripple effect. BTW I don't care for threads that point to skin color.

But no worries Tomlin will probably play out his contract then be allowed to go elsewhere. By that time Ben will hang 'em up and the team will have wasted his last remaining years.

But no worries there will be plenty of participation trophies to polish.

Than it's time for the NFL to get rid of the Rooney Rule if what you say is correct.

They won't, and there is nothing wrong with the rule of interviewing minorities.

What is wrong is hiring a minority over a more qualified candidate based on skin color.

Why aint there a rule for interviewing Native Americans for head coach? I am absolutely positive I could bullshit my way just as good as Tomlin did, and I might even be better at time management (took a course on it lol) and challenges then Tomlin.

If you're going to post about the Rooney Rule at least know what it is. You don't have to hire a black coach, you just have to interview one.

It’s not about not firing Tomlin because he’s black, it’s more about three coaches in fifty years. Their mantra is to not over react and fire the head coach because of fan discontent, not making the playoffs or even sub 500 seasons. That’s not what ownership does.
So abandon that thought Coach that Art II is stubbornly holding on to Tomlin because he’s black. I think Art II is overall happy with Tomlin and thinks he’s a capable coach. I for one do not share this opinion and think he should be dismissed based on his overall body of work and certainly not the color of his skin.

In my business I could care less about skin color. Now underperform / constantly late / detriment to the team spirit / non-diciplined / well you get my drift as all those (or a single one) will get you walking papers. TOMLIN has shown many things to the negative and if his skin color is keeping him from being fired then the boss should be ashamed of themselves. He must have some good qualities but in this League, if you aren't moving forward then you are going backwards. Seems like the STEELERS have been going backwards for awhile now...........something needs to happen.

I think they are just happy with winning seasons, that still has their pockets filled.

Coaches “fried”, “optics are hard”.....”politics would hit a boil”. Do you even read what you type before posting?

Since you are reading intolerant, Art Jr. is Dan’s brother, Art II is his son. You might want to remember that.

You are fine with firing shades, and replacing him with a coach who has only one winning record in 3 full seasons as a head coach, of which, besides one 10-6 no playoff season, never won more than 5 games? Yeah, you are the genius you think you are in your own mind.

Frazier would be a good DC hire, though. He comes from the Dungy tree, even worked with him in Tampa, and Indy.

What would it take for you to want Shades to go? Please do tell us, Ike. Tomlin needs to go. He's holding us back. I'll take Frazier over him, and a few other coaches for that matter.

I thought it was you had to interview a minority?? when did it turn into a black coach??

The rule is you have to interview a minority, though I'm not exactly sure what that means. It is strictly on race? What about a mixed-race candidate or a religious minority type?

To clarify to the board, I'm not saying Tomlin can't be fired. Heck, I said there is a chance he will be many times here! I'm saying he's the poster boy for the Rooney rule, and I think Art Rooney Jr, in my opinion, would have it a bit tougher firing Tomlin because his family name is attached to the rule.

I also think the NFL which is in the entertainment business will have some media displeasure if Tomlin was fired and this will be magnified by the fact that there would only be one African American coach left if it happened tomorrow. This is strictly my opinion, and I think it's helping Tomlin case just a bit. If you disagree, I don't care. I call it as I see it.

I ever said or implied coaching has anything to do with race, and agree with the firing of all the coaches so far. They had their chance.

You're delusional if you don't think the authors of the Rooney rule are not highly sensitive to the optics of firing Tomlin with this in background.

I don't think it is strictly on race. I just don't see any other minority coaches coaches around. You would assume it would cover all minorities.

Maybe behind closed doors you never know. I would love to know when the Rooney's think enough is enough, time to go in a different direction.

The Rooney rule isn't about typical "Minorities" like women. It was put into place to give black men coaching jobs. The idea that they put this in place just to "interview" a black coach is naive. And to think the authors of that rule wasn't going to hire a minority the next time they had a coaching vacancy is more than naive.

This sounds contradictory did you mean something different? You meant that the intent was stronger than to just interview them,

nevermind I answered my own question.

Regardless of the Rooney rule.

Tomlin ******* sucks.
Non losing seasons with no playoff appearances. Very little playoff wins.

More of the same next year.

When you match the Pirates with 3 playoff wins since 2011 you are doing something wrong.
