What a finish. Honestly one of the single most memorable games of my Steeler watching history. I was so jazzed for Bell's TD, that I couldn't sleep for 3 hours!

Quite a weird week on the waiver wire and activating/deactivating players. It changed daily, and my best guess only netted 4-7 correct on the Inactive list, which I consider a plus, but it's evened out by Ventrone being the surprise cut on the team (4-4 for the week and 15-8 total on the year.

Not only did we lose a starting safety to injury (in Allen), but we cut another backup safety in Ventrone, leaving us with only Mitchell, Golden, and Shamarko. This 3 headed dragon is going to be our backstop for the Cardinals. This is a head scratcher. Why wouldn't we call up Dangerfield for this game, in the off chance we get ANOTHER injury at Safety? Does this mean we have an alternative backup safety already on the roster? Is that what Boykin is being groomed for? Even I'm not crazy enough to predict this, but I will make a prediction. If I am the coach, this is the game to see if Shamarko is an NFL talent. I give him the reps, I give him the reins, and I let him sink or swim. I know this fills a lot of SN with a sense of dread, but I see it as an opportunity. He's been groomed. He was all but handed the position pre-season. He lost it, and now has a chance to make his mark. It's now or never for him, and I expect him to start this week. I'm not as down on his losing the football on the punt and nearly catching it, as I am up on the fact that he recovered a fumble, and had it not been for the female referee's inadvertent whistle, we would have had 2 defensive TDs, and Shamarko would be a hero. We did keep his recovered fumble and gained a possession, but people like to remember the faults. To each his own then.

Injuries and inactives are bit down this week. First let's talk about our Designated to return IR player in Markus Pouncey. I know he was eligible to return week 8. With his injury, i predicted that he wouldn't be ready until week 12. I hear a tweet ruling him out with a surgery to repair an infection. For Pouncey to have any infection following surgery and antibiotics means he probably has MRSA. I assume the new surgery will be an attempt to cut it out and place him on new drugs that can target and kill MRSA. The problem with a severe staph infection like MRSA means you don't know you have it until you have complications. Good news is if this is the reason for his surgery, and not a complication to the actual procedure done in the preseason, then Pouncey can still return this year, and isn't even really that far off of my original thought of 12 weeks (Dec). I think i can lean on the optimistic side and state that if he returns this season, it will be in mid Dec around week 14. This is barring any further complications or MRSA relapse. Good thing is, Pouncey gets better care than most of us. They found it and are treating it. So he has the best chance of an optimal recovery. I wish you well Pouncey, and I hope you're on the field soon!

Now on to Shazier. If you understand the injury as a burner (Shoulder and Neck stinger), then you would understand that it's a nagging injury with a high percentage of reinjury without significant rest. Everything was looking good last week for his return until he hurt it during the last practice. Bam, we're back to square one. I didn't see his arm in a sling, so it doesn't look like he's really back to square one, just a half step back as opposed to a full step. This means he's week to week, yet again, until he's symptom free. He's out this week for sure, and I'll have to monitor his practice before I can make a good prediction, but that's all I can say. An interesting side bet you can all play amongst yourselves: Who will return first? Ben or Shazier?

Injuries are a little more clear for me to make an inactive list prediction:
1. Ben - glad he's returned to practice in some capacity, and even happier he's helping to coach up Vick. Godspeed Ben!
2. Shazier - Back on the bench for this year's sweatshirt darling. I hope you mend quickly, I love watching you play!
3. Will Allen - No practice all week means no WA.
4. Cortez Allen - If it wasn't for Shazier, CA would win the Duce Staley Golden Sweatpants award this year.
5. Jarvis Jones - I saw he didn't practice, so I don't think he will play
6. Jessie James - He's red shirting
7. Chris Hubbard - He's the trend and with Legs being position flexible he's logical.

The other person with a chance to be inactive is Walton, since Big Dan is coming back. Though the team may err on the side of caution and make sure Walton is active in case they have a Big Dan gameday setback. It's what I'd do with a large man that has a leg injury.

Funny note I just noticed Woodley is on Pitt West's roster. Will be interesting to see if he plays...

Woah, I had a bad week at 3-4 (4-3 now Shazier is not playing) for predictions with Ben's knee still pending, bringing the Total to 10-5. (11-4) Happily I was wrong on Shazier's Shoulder, as it turned out to be a burner instead of a subluxation. It was properly diagnosed and he will return this week. I felt our team was going to rely a little heavier on the run, and I'm a bit disappointed that Vick didn't run more, but 160 yards is not close enough to 200 for me to take credit on.

Steve Smith was shut down for the first time this year, which was something I didn't think was possible. Our secondary is improving and gave Flacco fits. They were not our expected achillies heel as they recorded an INT and a very athletic FR.

The inactive list threw me for a loop when we chose to activate Chick. Moving Lyons to the PS. As much as we harp on our team moving players to the PS, there is a distinct tactical advantage to waiving a player just before a Thursday game. It gives very little time for the rest of the league to pick up a new player, when their game plan and personnel is already in place for their Sunday/Monday games. Smart work Colbert (who gets very little love around here). I am surprised Chick was inactive, since he was called up and we had Shazier out, but the biggest head scratcher was having our #2 and #3 TEs inactive for a game where it looked like we needed more blocking help for Vick and a commitment to the run. I'm not against Villanueva being a surprise TE, he has the size, can block, and was a TE in College, but I want to his pass catching utilized in the RZ. Bellicheck would not let those talents go unused.

For this week The predictions are easy. Everyone seems to be practicing fully with no setbacks. Cortez Allen, Shazier, McCullers, Spaeth, and Wheaton are all participating fully and will play on Monday. This creates an interesting scenario. We only have 2 players that will be sitting on the Inactive list due to injury this week. Ben and Ventrone. We now have 5 spots to fill with healthy players, and one of them will not be Landry Jones. My best bet is to follow the trend of who has been inactive:
1. Ben
2. Ventrone
3. Jessie James (Since Spaeth is active and they've shown they're willing to keep 2TEs on the inactive list with a backup QB...)
4. Bryant
5. Boykin - Can't seem to get on the field and with Allen returning, he's the odd man out.
6. LT Walton - no stranger to the IL, He'll sit with the return of McCullers. Cam can stay in the DE rotation and McCullers can spell McClendon
7. Shazier
+1 for getting 4/7 correct. Bryant doesn't count. He was inactive.

This moves us to who will be cut to make room for Bryant returning to the team? As I said in earlier posts, I think it comes down to Todman and Nix. Nix is being utilized, so I'm predicting Todman being waived. (though I'm still super confused to why we are carrying 2 FBs...) Wrong

This week we are going to see an offensive transformation. It was viewable in the preseason, and now will be on display prime time Monday night. Bryant's return opens up the vertical passing game. He has the speed, hight, and leaping ability to be a serious downfield threat. His abilities to make the big play on the deep pass would make Jump-ball-Joe Flacco cream his panties if he had him as a receiver. This kid is a matchup nightmare, and we would be 3-1 if he decided he liked football field turf more than natural 'grass'. In preseason, against first team defenses, no one had an answer for him. He was open, and when he wasn't, he was using his size and athleticism to make plays on the ball. The only way to stop him was to foul him. He racked up a few PI penalties because he's just too big to cover downfield. We finally have that tall speedy WR we always wanted, and the reason we wanted it, is it creates a mismatch whenever he is on the field. His presence will have a domino effect for the WR corp, and Bell as a pass catcher. Once he burns the d for a big play, defenses will have to bracket him and commit 2 men. AB demands 2-3men to bracket him. Our #2 Wheaton will now be in the slot along with Miller being covered by LBs! If you go dime to commit 6 DBs you have 2 on AB, 2 on Bryant, 1 on Wheaton, 1 on Miller, and Bell can come out to be defended by a LB! This is the personnel package we drafted to be a league wide mismatch, and with Ben at the helm, we dominate games. With Vick in the game, I'm not looking for domination, but I'm looking for him to have more success in the passing game than he had last week. He is a capable thrower and now has his best and favorite preseason deep ball target in Bryant. Look for Vick to have a better day this week and hopefully pull off a nice upset win in SD on MNF. (Bryant is now out. I will have to put this prediction on hold until he returns, but it will hold true once he steps on the field).Pending Bryant's first start

Another interesting point. If Jarvis doesn't play, I'd be interested to see Chick get some snaps at OLB. I'd like to see what he can do against NFL starters.

Great overview and wrap up. I haven't seen anything about Jarvis being ruled out. It would be a shame after the momentum he seems to be gaining under this Butler defense. If Chick does play, it would he be interesting to see if he is rotating out with Moats or if they move Dupree around more.
