Woah, I had a bad week at 3-4 (4-3 now Shazier is not playing) for predictions with Ben's knee still pending, bringing the Total to 10-5. (11-4) Happily I was wrong on Shazier's Shoulder, as it turned out to be a burner instead of a subluxation. It was properly diagnosed and he will return this week. I felt our team was going to rely a little heavier on the run, and I'm a bit disappointed that Vick didn't run more, but 160 yards is not close enough to 200 for me to take credit on.

Steve Smith was shut down for the first time this year, which was something I didn't think was possible. Our secondary is improving and gave Flacco fits. They were not our expected achillies heel as they recorded an INT and a very athletic FR.

The inactive list threw me for a loop when we chose to activate Chick. Moving Lyons to the PS. As much as we harp on our team moving players to the PS, there is a distinct tactical advantage to waiving a player just before a Thursday game. It gives very little time for the rest of the league to pick up a new player, when their game plan and personnel is already in place for their Sunday/Monday games. Smart work Colbert (who gets very little love around here). I am surprised Chick was inactive, since he was called up and we had Shazier out, but the biggest head scratcher was having our #2 and #3 TEs inactive for a game where it looked like we needed more blocking help for Vick and a commitment to the run. I'm not against Villanueva being a surprise TE, he has the size, can block, and was a TE in College, but I want to his pass catching utilized in the RZ. Bellicheck would not let those talents go unused.

For this week The predictions are easy. Everyone seems to be practicing fully with no setbacks. Cortez Allen, Shazier, McCullers, Spaeth, and Wheaton are all participating fully and will play on Monday. This creates an interesting scenario. We only have 2 players that will be sitting on the Inactive list due to injury this week. Ben and Ventrone. We now have 5 spots to fill with healthy players, and one of them will not be Landry Jones. My best bet is to follow the trend of who has been inactive:
1. Ben
2. Ventrone
3. Jessie James (Since Spaeth is active and they've shown they're willing to keep 2TEs on the inactive list with a backup QB...)
4. Chickillo was inactive last week, and should be inactive this week
5. Boykin - Can't seem to get on the field and with Allen returning, he's the odd man out.
6. LT Walton - no stranger to the IL, He'll sit with the return of McCullers. Cam can stay in the DE rotation and McCullers can spell McClendon
7. Todman. he didn't get a snap last game, so I don't expect him to get a hat this game
Updated inactive list in responses below vvvvvvv

This moves us to who will be cut to make room for Bryant returning to the team? As I said in earlier posts, I think it comes down to Todman and Nix. Nix is being utilized, so I'm predicting Todman being waived. (though I'm still super confused to why we are carrying 2 FBs...)

This week we are going to see an offensive transformation. It was viewable in the preseason, and now will be on display prime time Monday night. Bryant's return opens up the vertical passing game. He has the speed, hight, and leaping ability to be a serious downfield threat. His abilities to make the big play on the deep pass would make Jump-ball-Joe Flacco cream his panties if he had him as a receiver. This kid is a matchup nightmare, and we would be 3-1 if he decided he liked football field turf more than natural 'grass'. In preseason, against first team defenses, no one had an answer for him. He was open, and when he wasn't, he was using his size and athleticism to make plays on the ball. The only way to stop him was to foul him. He racked up a few PI penalties because he's just too big to cover downfield. We finally have that tall speedy WR we always wanted, and the reason we wanted it, is it creates a mismatch whenever he is on the field. His presence will have a domino effect for the WR corp, and Bell as a pass catcher. Once he burns the d for a big play, defenses will have to bracket him and commit 2 men. AB demands 2-3men to bracket him. Our #2 Wheaton will now be in the slot along with Miller being covered by LBs! If you go dime to commit 6 DBs you have 2 on AB, 2 on Bryant, 1 on Wheaton, 1 on Miller, and Bell can come out to be defended by a LB! This is the personnel package we drafted to be a league wide mismatch, and with Ben at the helm, we dominate games. With Vick in the game, I'm not looking for domination, but I'm looking for him to have more success in the passing game than he had last week. He is a capable thrower and now has his best and favorite preseason deep ball target in Bryant. Look for Vick to have a better day this week and hopefully pull off a nice upset win in SD on MNF. (Bryant is now out. I will have to put this prediction on hold until he returns, but it will hold true once he steps on the field).

1) Ben's knee: This is the biggest concern on every Steelers' fan's mind. At least the ACL is intact, and no major tear was done to the MCL. This is really positive, considering the degree Ben's knee bent toward the inside of his body. Moving 10-15 degrees would have dictated some major damage. Fortunately the damage was not done to the ligaments, but something had to take the brunt of that injury, and it was the 2 bones (Femur and Tibia) smashing together, that stopped that injury from being catastrophic. Ben mentioned that he thought he broke his leg. A bone bruise isn't too far off. It's very painful, and does involve the bones causing extreme pain to him until it completely heals. Due to the range of motion and the amount of pain Ben is in, I'd have to deduce that his bone bruise is severe, and not localized to just the contact points. Instead when a severe bone bruise occurs, the compression spiderwebs away from the contact point causing a larger area of bruising where no contact was made. Bone bruises of this nature would take 8 weeks to heal. Even though his ligaments should be healed in 4 weeks, the bones will not be. I would expect Ben to be out for at least 6 weeks, and at worst 8 weeks. With the best treatment money can buy, and with Ben's pain tolerance, 6 weeks is a good bet, but 4 weeks is not a realistic expectation IMHO. Pending

2) Shazier's Shoulder: I've been mentioning in many posts that we've been sold a bill of goods regarding Shazier's shoulder injury. Shazier does not have a stinger. That I am sure of. You don't sling a stinger, let alone sling it for multiple days. Tomlin also let slip in his presser that he was "concerned about the joint" which is why they are waiting for "strength to return" before letting him practice again. Weakness in the shoulder joint, combined with a sling to help keep the joint stable, I'm deducing that his shoulder is separated. There was no evidence of Shazier getting his shoulder worked on, and he didn't leave the sideline vs the 49ers. This evidence points to a subluxation, and I'm pretty confident it is, as opposed to a dislocation. The difference is a dislocation has to be manually manipulated to place the humorous back into the shoulder socket, and cause a lot of soft tissue damage in the process. A subluxation is a partial dislocation, where the bone separates from the socket, but goes back in on its own. Damage can still occur and unfortunately this injury can reoccur if the soft tissue is not healed before returning to game play. There was no evidence of Shazier getting his shoulder worked on, and he didn't leave the sideline vs the 49ers. It seems the Steelers are being very cautious treating Shazier's injury. It also means that Shazier can be out for as much as 4-8 weeks total, before it would be completely healed. Shazier is definitely not playing this week (as we all know). I'm hopeful he will be ready to go with another 10 days rest, but I'm leaning that he will miss 4 games before returning to the defense. Right Edited 10/11

3) After a terrible week in St Louis, I believe the offensive line will bounce back and have a strong game against the young and inexperienced front 7 of Baltimore. Baltimore will have to sell out stacking the box with extra players to have any chance of slowing down the rushing attack. I'm hoping Haley is game planning for this so throwing in play action deep balls will play to Vick's strength of getting the ball down field quickly with a flick of his wrist. I expect the Steelers to have close to 200 combined yards rushing with Bell/Williams/Vick, and ravens fans will be in agony watching their once powerful defense, giving up chunks of rushing yardage with ease and consistency. Wrong

4) My concern last week was on the offensive side, this week, it will be up the to the defense to slow down one player specifically. Steve Smith is on a tear this season. The Ravens' are using him much like we use AB, and he's showing the experience and route running to get himself open, nearly every play, and is now their top weapon on offense. I personally don't think we match up well enough to slow him down. Smith will have a big day (over 100yards receiving and close to 10 catches), but he has to be kept out of the endzone. If he scores with ease, it will be a tough game for us to compete in. Wrong The ravens are also big on their TEs, which is another position that gives us fits defending. Pitta is on IR, and Gilmore may be held out, so look for Maxx Williams to get his first start. Any success he has in this game, will have ravens' fans crowing about how smart they were to move ahead of us to grab him in the second round of last years draft.

5) Injuries and game day inactives: Well our game day inactive list is filling up with injured players. We will have 7 inactive players this week and one of them will not be Landry Jones, as he earns the first hat of his career this week. With the short week, yesterday's practice will dictate who will play. Silverback will play with a hurt thumb. Right It would take a broken neck to keep him away from hitting Ravens. Cortez brown was limited yesterday, so he won't be playing on Thursday. Right Speath and McCullers also didn't practice, so both will be out. Right This already has our inactive list as: 1. Ben 2. Shazier 3. Cortez 4. Spaeth 5. McCullers, leaving only 2 healthy scratches this week. I'm thinking they will be Lyons and Hubbard since Jessie James will be needed as the #2 TE and Jones will be needed as the #2 QB. Wrong

I'm getting a stronger feeling Archer is the odd man out. I hope I am right because he has done nothing to help the team. Give Todman a chance.

Archer should have been out in camp.

Archer has only had ONE opportunity to return a kick. That net return was to the 30 yard line. Above the line. He has not been added to the offensive rotation - so, why cut him? Just sayin'...

2 full backs: Nix's special team play is "above the line". Will Johnson is "positional flexible". J is the "starting" FB plus can play at HB and TE if need be. Id be cutting Archer if i had any say. Don't be surprised if they leave Bryant undressed, using his roster exemption to keep playing players that they apparently haven't seen enough of, as of yet, to make a final decision.

This Archer kid was long in our POSTs, but VERY short in our hearts and talent. Cutthe midget.

Salute the nation

Well this ******* sucks. Looks like Shazier and Bryant will be on the inactive list changing it to:

1. Ben
2. Ventrone
3. Jessie James (Since Spaeth is active and they've shown they're willing to keep 2TEs on the inactive list with a backup QB...)
4. Bryant
5. Boykin - Can't seem to get on the field and with Allen returning, he's the odd man out.
6. LT Walton - no stranger to the IL, He'll sit with the return of McCullers. Cam can stay in the DE rotation and McCullers can spell McClendon
7. Shazier

The inactive spot is between Chick, Walton, and Boykin. I think Chick plays this week.

Well at least I was right about Shazier not playing this week. I'd rather have him in than be right. Here's the kick in the teeth. This is going to be a season long issue now with Shazier. Burners reoccur without significant time off, and that means months. You thought he was a sweatshirt model now, this can unfortunately rival Duce Staley with the way this may play out. He couldn't make it through a week of practice with an extra day of rest before a MNF game. This is not a good sign...
