As Jerome Bettis heads toward Canton, he hopes one of his former linemen follows him next year.

Asked on a conference call today to name a teammate who he thinks should join him in the Hall of Fame, Bettis named guard Alan Faneca.

“He deserves to be in the Hall of Fame,” Bettis said of Faneca.

Alan ... how do I put this nicely... acted a little bit *******-ish on his way out of the Burgh. Should that detour his path towards the HOF in Steeler fans eyes?

His pass protection tailed off toward the end of his stay. But he was a damn good Guard.

Just based on his time with the Steelers is he HOF worthy?

No. Why should it?

I think Faneca is a borderline Hall of Famer mainly because they don't value guards. However, he dominated the position along with Steve Hutchinson for a decade and he does have the career highlight play paving the way for Willie Parker's record setting 75-yard touchdown run in the Super Bowl.

I think he gets in. One of the best lineman in the last 20 years.

I read another piece by Nick Coolings from DKPghSports and he wouldn't name anyone else(Faneca already covered) besides Dirt Dawson to get in that he played with.. no Troy or Hines

To me, eh....I loved Faneca, he was an excellent linemen for us, but I don't think he's quite to HOF level, he's just a notch below if I'm being honest. To be frank, there are already too many guys in the Hall who, IMO, shouldn't be there (Sapp, Namath, Andre Tippett, etc....) I think we've become a little too lenient regarding who gets in. It's supposed to be for the best players of all time, the type of guys who did what nobody, or very few people have. For example, Bettis deserves to be in the Hall because he was the best "Big" back of all time (apologies to Earl Campbell).

Alan was very good, and he deserves to be known as one of the best Steeler offensive linemen. If he gets in, I'll be happy for him, but if I put my Steelers fanhood aside, I don't think he's a HOF type of player.

Alan Faneca is a lock for the HOF!!! One of the best Steeler linemen EVER!!!!

He will probably be next. I wish it would be Shell, Greenwood, Fancea and then Hines Ward.

Faneca belongs. G's just don't get in too quickly..o.r at all in a lot of cases.

I don't know exactly what the underlying cause of the bad blood was between Faneca and Dan Rooney, but it was apparently pretty personal and was more than just money.

I don't think he's HOF material, that's just my opinion. But if he gets in, is the Hall aware that he'd need a medium gold blazer now, and not an XXL?

Faneca was First team all-pro 6 times and 2nd team twice. That along with 9 pro bowls and the team of the decade of the 2000's will ensure him the Hall. Not sure how long it will take though.

FAneca will get in, he grades out as an all timer at guard... but guards get in very rarely and have to wait a long time to do so. maybe a decade from now after the glory guys from his era are in he gets the call... wont be next year, that's almost certain

He'll make it but not sure about first ballot though.Damn, I would have never known that was him from that picture. He's had to have lost well over 100 lbs. I saw him up close at Heinz when he was with us and he looked like a bear.

Agree, I think he's HOF-worthy but OL take a while to get in.

The issue might have been well founded as far as Faneca's point of view went. When he left we had some rather ****** lines and the big idea guys that were put in here in the way of coaches for the offensive line really sucked so bad they are gone now.
