Best Free Agent pick up....

DW will never get that because he is a situational player. Da situation be when Bell be on dat Dank

I'd put DAW in my top ten. Besides being a baller he is just a good fit and loves it here.

Yeah, Gandy has to be up there.

He had a pretty shaky first season with the Steelers in 1999, but there was a three year stretch after that where he never seemed to get beat in pass protection. It was ridiculous. He and John Jackson are two of the most underrated tackles ever, not just for the Steelers.

Since FA started in 1993, the Steelers have made a lot of great signings.

Kevin Greene is probably at the top. I could not believe they got him, as there were larger market teams bidding for his services, and he did not disappoint.

I'd probably go....

1) Greene
2) Farrior
3) Hartings
4) Gandy
5) Clark

Williams, Ray Seals, and Von Oelhoffen get my consideration as well.

Jeff Hartings is a really underrated pick imo. Not Dawson but he was solid. Ryan Clark was my favorite Steeler for a bit with his hard hits and smart play making. Farrior as well. Jerome Bettis(HOF)

Jerome was a draft day trade.

hell Mewelde Moore and Jerichco Cotchery, are both ahead of Mitchell at this point...

Jericho was Ben's go to guy for a bit. The dude had good hands. Mewelde? Eh serviceable. Helped along the way for SB43 so he did good. Mitchell is just a loud mouthed punk who gets burned. Didn't like the signing a couple years ago, still not happy with him on the team. But it is what it is

Farrior (over Greene only because he was here much longer)
Greene
Clark
Hartings
Gandy

It always amazes me how many people think Bettis was a free agent. Staggering

Probably because he was traded for draft picks and not another player. A 3rd round pick in 1996 and a 4th round in 1997. One of the great trade steals of all time.
The Rams got a new head coach his last year there and he was not used properly in St. Louis.

1. Farrior. Potsie was a beast and lost out on DPOY to Reed. Would be known as an all time great had he won it.
2. Hartings. Steelers didn't have a center since Dirt retired, and this was a HUGE move. Not only was Hartings not a center (he was a guard in Detroit), he became an all pro and centered one of the most productive running lines in Steelers lore.
3. Clark. He was the perfect pickup, and perfect compliment to playing with HOFer Troy Polamalu. He had both FS and SS traits, being a good cover safety, and a big hitting thumper at the LOS. His diversity helped our Secondary and Defense to be close to the tops in the league each year he was here.
4. Greene. Loved him, but he was only here for 3 years. He'd be higher if he was here longer. Had 3 great pass rushing years for us.
5. Von Olhoffen. I loved him. He was a road grader, stout against the run, and had some ability to get to the passer. The irony of being a Bengal and ruining the Bengals chances to win a SB at the expense of Carson Palmer's knee, is delicious enough to earn him #5 on my list.

if Mettenberger pushes Landry off the roster, he'll move up towards the top

1. Bettis
2. Farrior....or
3. D.williams ?

I'm thinking D. WILLIAMS is about to leapfrog Farrior's spot....especially if he helps bringing #7 back to the Burgh. Guys been a pro on and off the field. Tomlin needs to give Williams his touches when Bell gets back.
Not even close. Farrior played a lot of years after he signed him and almost won DPOY.....and Bettis was a trade, not a UFA. Williams is only in his second season with us.

Green was a HoFer........He has to be at the top.

When you look at the free agent signings you also have to consider how long they played here. Think Farrior has to get the nod even though Green was a hall of fame player.

Thigpen was a free agent signing.

Well, if we're going to go throwing "criteria" into the mix, how about "were they an integral part of a Steelers team that made it to the Super Bowl"? Then, "Did that team win the Super Bowl"? I mean DeAngelo has been great, but as he himself has said (paraphrasing), "it don't mean a thing without the ring".

I love what Williams brings, but he only starts when Bell is hurt or suspended, when Bell is playing he's a backup. Farrior was a full time starter her for what 10 seasons, three super bowls, and a few #1 defenses, and got robbed of defensive player of the year in 2004. I'd put Clark ahead of Williams too

I think the better question is who is the best FA depth player we've ever had. I think Williams wins this without question.

Williams isn't near 2nd, he is way down the line. We have had a number of free agents that were long-term starters, not spot starters
in 1 plus seasons.
