Of course many in here will claim it's one of the Ds from Pitt in the 70's, and they are in the discussion, for sure.

But this says the best ever is Chicago 1985, and it asserts that so matter-of-factly.

But I must say, the 1976 Steelers gave up LESS than 10 points per game, where the Bears gave up over 12.

Honestly, I put the '70's Steelers, '85 Bears and 2000 Ravens all in a 3-way tie for best ever.

I put the 80's/90's Giants and Eagles just a notch below those teams. Those were also amazing Ds.
 
No regular season defense was ever better than the 76 Steelers during those last nine games. The scores against were 6,0,0,0,3,16,3,0,0. The 85 Bears were equally dominant in in the playoffs - 0,0,10

Statistically we can argue that in comparison to the Bears the 76 Steelers were better.. But because they thrashed a precheat patriot team they seem to often get the nod.

If you bothered to really grasp this, you'd know it was only making evaluations on single seasons only, hence it was not relevant that Pitt had a 10-year stretch of greatness; only thing that was considered was single seasons.

Plus, the 70's didn't have free agency to deal with so it's not an apples to apples comparison if you consider a multi-year span.

No matter what the Steelers of the 70s were the most dominant defense of all time. You can pick the year.

can you reread opening thread? it mentions 80/90s giants and Eagles defense. that kinda makes it hard for us simple folk to grasp that it is evaluations on single seasons only.

That defense from 74 to even 79 did as they pleased. The only time they didn't was when their heads weren't in the game. Yes, the 76 D was the best unit that ever walked onto a field. It isn't arguable, statistically or otherwise. Anybody that 'thinks' otherwise wasn't paying attention. That core D carried them through 4 Lombardis in a 6 year span. And they were still mauling teams in 79...

Yeah, the 85 bears and the 2000 rats' Ds were really good, even fun to watch. For a year. To be fair, the rats were really good for the better part of a decade, but have one Lombardi to show for it. And our D was every bit as good over the same same span and have two more Lombardis to show for it.

No comparison, sports fans. Pittsburgh. Steelers. Defense.
