Benton Signs Extension

I was hoping for $14.5 million, but after Wyatt’s new deal that wasn’t realistic. It’s below the rumored money he was asking for and another investment keeping a player they drafted and developed. Let’s get JPJ done and call it an offseason.

It was good to see them lock him up. They did a solid job retaining players that could have wiggled free.

Year after year I keep hearing the Steelers won’t be able to sign X player only to eventually sign them.

99 problems but a cap ain’t one.

How did the Steelers clear cap space?
 
Jesus that seems like a lot of money for someone I would consider just an above average player.
 
Welp, I think that’s too much money….Benton was not an impact player on a below average DL last year, without Cam playing Superman at the age of 36 they would have been a terrible line last year

It’s going to be pretty dang hard for them not to pay JPJ top10 money, maybe top 5 money, after throwing sillly money at Benton and Herbig for what they must be hoping they turn into when JPJ was already arguably that guy last year

I think cap issues are on the horizon, even without paying franchise QB money…the productive parts of the offensive line will need paid soon too

He's not a NT, but that is what Tomlin wanted him to be no matter how many times he got bullied in the middle of the line.

Inside pass rushers are worth their weight in gold in today's NFL, and Benton should be even better at it not being played out of position much of the time.

The clear it various of ways. The bulk of extensions stair-stack into following years. To not overload the here and now. Free agents they stair-stack in various ways sometimes a little bit more initially then hitting the stair method…in the process they find ways to get solid free agent deals. Rodgers saved them money so did Brisker for example.

They sometimes kick the can down the road with contracts freeing up money. They try to do that less now but still do it on a smaller scale. They let dead weight go including cutting contracts. So the clearing space is a continuous process not just predicated on one method causing a mass exodus on talent. They also loaded up on draft picks and those contracts sit lower than times past. Which further manipulates how much you have to invest initially and not costing X amount until that second contract which they again manipulate.

Then the cap rises and they know that process is continuous and account for it.

The actual process of contract negotiation they are good at it. With all the various forms of it. When you are good at it that sharpens that cap clearing process on a year to year basis. They evolve and don’t just stick with the same process. Tweaking as the league changes they manipulate within those perimeters.

I would rotate the three of Cam, Harmon, and Benton. It keeps them fresh and the pass rush potentially more effective.

Very aggressive signing to say the least..
But top notch DL men are few and far between in the league..

I think their plan of moving him off the "A" gap will increase his productivity this year..

Their long term evaluation of Benton must be off the charts..

Agree. As of now, I think you go with Cam, Black, and Harmon as the starters, with Benton spelling one or both of Cam and Harmon. And I doubt they have Black play all 3 downs but maybe they will move back to having a big NT in on passing downs as well so the OLB's can be 1-on-1.

They could list him as a co-starter and avoid who is say number 1 and 2. They can rotate Black with Day. Sprinkle in Rubio. Nice to see some depth available in the trenches definitely.
 
So the future is benton, black and harmon
I think good signing. Didn't want this to be another gravedigger deal.

That said. I wonder what Porter will be asking for now. 🤔
 
2023 was a pretty impressive draft class. Tomlin hit a homerun on it. Now cut Ramsey and sign Porter.🤔

Ramsey is overpaid I thought that from the get go. We shall see he could very well be a surprise cut..
 
I dont know man. Yeah he was misused but 18 a year for a guy that's been uninspiring? And Herbig, a backup at 24 a year? Meanwhile, Porter a guy who actually has played his balls off can't get signed. Add on top of that, the DK at 30 a year and a 2nd, while they gave away Pickens for a 3rd. He ain't no Khan Artist

(Will give him props for Jamal Dean signing)

I’m pretty sure that’s the defensive plan, a lot of rotation.

Graham and McCarthey both talked about that from the start.

Who will be the fourth rotation piece???

Benton” contract does seem a little high, but the structure may make a difference in that regards.

We have him locked up for the foreseeable future, so there is that.

Exciting times to possibly see a player that plays his contract value.!

Alot of those are from a different coaching staff.
I know the gm is the same, but MM is certainly going in a different direction thankfully.
Looking forward to seeing how this turns out

The coaching staff is not telling Khan what the players should be signed for. They are not telling Khan what an acceptable level of compensation is in a trade. Thats all Khan.

They may have said go get DK, but the 30 number and the 2nd is all Khan. Disagree 5 billion percent

Khan has done some good things but there are a few head scratchers in there. He's a mixed bag for me at this point.

I would think a coach that has been around forb19 years has a lot to say with who they get and how much they are worth
