This may be a short lived thread. I don't know. Just was thinking about Ben's contract and it's implications. Ben is getting paid 45 mil this year. Less next year. What does that mean for how he is treated. I know they put him on i.r. that's a lot of money to pay/ carry. Is there another option the team might consider in order not to pay that? Or is he getting his 45 mil no matter what?

He gets his salary no matter what. As he should............

He's not getting cut this year, his salary is guaranteed since he was rostered week 1.

Looking to next years. If he's cut or traded, it's $25M of dead space and they actually save $8M on the cap. Otherwise, they can spread it out over 2 years with a post June 15th designation to $12.5M for 2 years.

If Mason blows up this year, I seriously hope they move Ben and get that first round pick back.

It sucks to see talk about trading Ben, but eventually every good run comes to an end. It is a game, and a business, things like this will always happen. IF Rudolph play well, Ben will have two choices, retire or accept a trade to another team.

From the way Tomlin talked, it sounds like he and the front office have an understanding from Ben's doctor that he will be ready to go next year. I don't think this is a real serious surgery. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if he was given the option to rest it for a month or so or just get the surgery done cause he might need it anyhow. Getting Fitzpatrick is a sign that Colbert and Tomlin are going all in for the final 2 years of Ben's and their contracts. They will all retire after that IMO.

It does seem we're at the end of the road. Colbert on a one year contract, Tomlin year-to-year, Ben injured, questionable to return.

As far as injuries, the biggest bummer was Ryan Shazier going down. Nobody saw that coming, not Tomlin, not Colbert. He was by far our best draft pick of the past decade, and it gets taken away...like that.

Not sure about Ben's elbow 'injury.' Seems to me he just wanted to take some time off, get on the Playstation, spend more time with the kids. Throw a little suspense into the season, if you will. Kick back in the jacuzzi, eat a couple of hot dogs. Why not sit out a few games, nurse your arm a little? Ben will saunter out on the field mid-season, flex his biceps, and carry the team to victory....like Bettis did, in Detroit. ;)

Perhaps the thinking in-house is that Ben's coming back, perhaps sooner than later. Like Sean Davis, he too is IR eligible to return. Crazier things have happened.

Take that with a grain of salt, as we've been posting Ben's obituary and retirement speech a mere 24 hours ago.

Fact is Ben's injured and will have surgery on that elbow. He's no spring chicken, no Jack LaLanne. I doubt he can jump back in a short amount of time. Miracles do happen, I'd proceed with caution. Nothing but love and respect for #7. If he can make it back and play another year or two, that would be more than awesome.

In the meantime Mason Rudolph is the man at the wheel. Rooting for the kid to shine.

If Mason blows it up Ben STILL comes back if he wants next year. Then if Ben blows the Steelers fake an injury puts mason in and then after the season gives Ben the option of retiring or getting released. That’s what they did with Troy, and Hines and tried with Harrison.

Sorry, but I believe it is now Rudolph’s team, and his position to lose. If he can’t get it done, then Ben gets the keys back while they draft the next QB. If Rudolph gets it done, Ben retires or accepts a trade. No way in hell does a successful Rudolph go back to the bench to cool off for a year or two.

Big Ben was 37 in March. He will be 38 before he can probably throw that much. From what I read rehab from this type of surgery is 12-18 months. Assuming he gets the surgery soon, he won't be ready to play until part way into next season and will he be the same gunslinging BB? Doubtful.

BB has been beat to a pulp early in his career and came back. He has gotten 2 Superbowl rings and played in 3 SBs. He has given the Steelers chances every season. He has had to put up with 2 DIVAS that …. I won't go on.

We forget about his wife and children. He has had a LONG career in the NFL and frankly, myself included, we have been spoiled by having BB.

At 68 years old I've been spoiled to have a team with BOTH Terry Bradshaw AND Big Ben but time marches on.

It's time to embrace Mason Rudolph and hope Big Ben comes out of his surgery well.

He's a class guy who announces his intention of coming back in 2020 when other players would have announced their retirement. Part of this is the fiery athlete coming out but part is his love for his teammates on both sides of the ball and the hope that this gives them during the season.

Let's give him time to assess his situation; he's earned that. Let's forget about Tom Brady at 42. His play is remarkable at his age BUT we have to face reality.

Look at New Orleans with Drew Brees (age 38). Look at the New York Giants with Eli Manning being demoted at age 38.

Time to move on Stiller fans.

Cope I hope Mason lights it up this year and if he does, and Ben comes back healthy, knowing the Steelers way of doing business, Ben will be inserted back as the starter. There is no way they entertain thoughts of trading him. Ben would just retire rather than play in another city.

It depends. This could be a Fleury type situation where Ben may be willing to leave the team, under certain situations, in order to better the organization. He would be just as loved for his sacrifice if he did that.

I think Rudolph would have to take this team to the SB and win it for Ben to be dealt. I just do not see that scenario happening.

I saw yesterday that this is NOT a Tommy John surgery. Recovery is more like 6 months instead of the full 15 for a Tommy john procedure.

Worst case scenario is Rudolph balls out and we have to make a decision on Ben. Trading him for picks would be ideal but its a limited market. Its likely that we have seen the last of Big Ben in black and gold. I hope I am wrong but its basically a no win situation for us if Rudolph performs. If Rudolph doesn't perform well, then you let Ben have his job back and look to getting another QB down the road.,

My guess is Ben would retire before going to another team. He doesn't need money. He doesn't need accolades. He has a family and a home. Going to another team to play out the last year of his contract is unlikely.

Also, if this is TJ, the recovery is a real *****. I took my son through it (lefty pitcher). The rehab is long and slow but something folks who have never seen after a major surgery like this is the psychological toll. Make no mistake, if TJ, it will take a toll on Ben. We may not see it, but it will be there.

Last, there are some potential for significant side effect on this surgery. When the surgeon moves the muscle to get to the bone one of the major nerves gets moved. My son had numbness and then tingling in his ring and pinkie finger for almost 2 years as a result. He never lost control of them, but he did lose a good bit of sensitivity for a while. I know another pitcher who had the surgery as well (same physical therapist, different surgeon) who lost all use of the ring and pinkie finger. Yea, that was an exceptional case scenario, but it is a real risk.

I wish the very best results for Ben, but I also know first hand the challenges of this procedure (if it is TJ).

Nick Foles, Carson Wentz. Nothing wrong with having two good QBs, nothing wrong with Mason returning to the backup if he does play well. Ben won’t play but a couple of more years regardless, Mason can earn his spot right now to be the LONG Term answer. Cannot imagine him demanding release if Ben wants to play a couple more years, just bide his time to be the next QB. We are way ahead of ourselves, fingers crossed he performs well and stays healthy!

No way, this is Rudolphs team until Ben comes back, If Ben comes back healthy next offseason and his arm is a full go, he's the starter no questions asked, Rudolph would have to come out and have a Mahommes type season for this to be in question. It's crazy the amount of people that want to ship Ben off after seeing Rudolph play one half of football, where he made some plays and he missed some as well.

Hard to believe with Ben getting injured all this talk about what he is getting paid, trade him, we sound like ESPN and the NFL network, not Steeler fans

I guess there is always that possibility. I think most of us including myself are getting ahead of ourselves a bit here with the young Mr.Rudolph. He looked good in the 2nd half Sunday but 14 games will be his audition period and I feel confidant he can pass that audition, with a lot of help from his O L, Receivers, RB's and most importantly Mr. Fitchner. Don't set him up to fail, play to his strengths to give him a chance. No I'm not expecting Mahomes results by any means but he's got the talent to succeed and get us the W's and thats all we care about. He doesn't have to throw for 40 TD's and 4,000 yards just be efficient with leading drives and putting points on the board, and consuming clock time keeping the defense rested as much as possible.

Ben is making close to $30M a year for the next 3 years?

Hell ya he will show up in the trainers room, who wouldn't?

Anything could happen but I just don’t see the Steelers trading Ben unless he wanted it.

To bad we don't save any cap space with Ben's injury. Get Ramsey, and nobody's throwing the ball against us.

cap space aside, what trade collateral do you think the team has that would interest Jax.
