Beachum likely gone in 2016?

I seriously doubt that Beachum is going anywhere. One he isn't the prototypical LT size wise..... (not that he makes it to the market, this little piggy is stayin home)

Two as for mentioned reasons money coming off the books, increased cap, restructures.

And there is tags available for use if needed.

I see year after year Steelers keeping the majority of high profile players.

Sanders and Lewis the exceptions. But Lewis wanted to leave and Sanders wanted the big doughnuts at a position the Steelers draft well.

I don't think Beach falls into either of those categories.

He'll be

back

If Villa can be developed, he's your guy. Cheap, huge, and will free up cash for the skilled players. Don't worry about tagging RBs, they are cheap.

Not a running back with Bell's skill set; he isn't coming cheap to the Steelers or any other team. Best running back in the game right now, can run, catch, and block.

Papillon

We got to get out of our tunnel vision in our value of Steeler players. Nice game film breakdown on Beachum . He not going anywhere if this is the type of season he puts up.

Yeah, I know this isnt gonna be the popular opinion, but I've never been all that impressed with Beachum. We're fretting over him leaving like he's John Ogden, but I think he's very replacable. If he leaves, the offense wont fall to pieces.

So beachum is getting paid 1.5 million this year. 1.5 million for a starring LT. Next year we franchise him that's less than 6 million a season for two years of a starting LT average. Maybe we get a deal done maybe not but right now 100% of the pressure is on Beachum to produce and 3 penalties and allowing a sack in his first game it's looking like the Steelers made a wise decision. Steelers can try to get a deal up to the draft and if they can't draft a guy to replace him.

I've never been sold at Beachum at LT. He's a good LT but I've always felt he'd be an all pro LG. There's a few real good zone blocking tackles coming out in the next draft and Villanueva is still progressing. We have options if we only have Beachum for 2 more years.

I wonder what we tried to offer. He's probably worth Eugwne Monroe type money (5/37.5) but I'd think we tried to get a deal like the Anthony Collins(5/30) because we own him for a low salary this year.

Now the math gets all junky for us as a tag is approx 13.5m next year. And transition tags are largely a fool's game.

(And yes I know Collins was cut after 1 year..just using recent LT contracts)

Bell is the much more interesting salary debate cause I imagine a hold out will happen next year if he's a monster in 2015 and not taken care of.

Why anyone is worrying about the salary cap status of next season right now is insane. The cap will go up along with restructured contracts and so on and so forth. Were not in salary cap hell anymore. Woodley and Polamalu come off the books too.

This is exactly right. First, it's been awhile since we've even had 7m to START an off season before we restructured contracts and made cuts. Second, if we don't sign anyone else the rest of this year, we carry over another 5m in cap space, that gives us 12m. We are in pretty good condition as far as the cap is concerned. Especially when compared to the last 5-6 years.

I get that but he's the only half-decent LT they've found since they let Max Starks walk. Everybody else they tried sucked balls.

Jdont forget timmons In the bad deals. He has to be the most over paid player In the league the last five years

True, but I'd argue that Timmons was likely our best player on the defense for some of those years. And he was very durable. Still we paid him at least 3 million a year too much. The biggest problem was not cutting Troy and Ike sooner. That would have saved millions.

I think they would have except they didn't have anyone waiting in the wings who was better. As we see this year.

Beachum is an under sized technician without a lot of power. He's a good, but not great left tackle as a pass blocker, but on the weak side as a run blocker.

I do not think he would be good at guard.

Isn't a franchise player paid the average of the top five at his positing? For Left Tackles that's over $10,000,000 a season! Some team that thinks its a player or two away with cap space might take him in free agency. Here's what the cap space looks like in 2016

Simple restructuring of Ben's deal, a reasonable end of career deal for Timmons (4/24?), A new deal for Dicastro(5/40?), a restructuring of Pouncey and and a restructuring of Heywood all combine for approx 20-30 in space we can open. Not going to do the math, but the number is "lots of $$$". Plus whatever we carryover from this year.

Beachum likely gone in 2016?

1. I like Kevin Beachum, stand up guy, overachiever, makes things happen at 6-3 in the land of giants. Ok vs the run, pretty damn good in pass pro.
2. If he won't take a reasonable contract, next man up, baby. Let some other team overpay for him. Look to draft a new LT in the first round next year, and a safety/CB in round 2.

According to this link, the Steelers have a little over 7 million in cap space for 2016.

http://overthecap.com/salary-cap-space

Now for the bad news. Beachum is going to be a free agent. He'll be looking for Franchise type of money.
Here's what the top LT's make:

http://overthecap.com/position/left-tackle

As you can see the average amount of a top 10 starting Left Tackle makes about 10 million per year. Beachum will be asking for this amount in free agency...and he'll likely get it or come very close.

Translation: We can't afford Beachum right now. Thank you Colbert for giving so much to Cortez Allen and Mike Mitchell.
Easy solution... Cut both of them. If keeping either or both of those guys means losing Beachum, send them packing. You can always replace two bad football players with two different bad football players. It's a lateral move... you aren't losing or gaining anything... except of course cap space to sign Beachum.

There is no way i would sign beachum over bell and decastro. I understand we need a LT but i don't see him as an elite type player. I think he has looked good to us because we are god awful at picking tackles... I would try to sign him to a reasonable deal, but i have a feeling a desperate team will give him a big contract. I would not take a LT in the first round. We desperately need help in the secondary. We almost have to take a CB or safety first.

I say we use every pick in next year's draft on corners and safeties. I figure if we have 6 or 7 rookie DB's in camp, perhaps even a few more undrafted guys, maybe... just maybe... we'll be able to find a guy or two that can actually play. The logic being the more horses you have in your stable, the more likely you are to find one that can pull the cart.

but maybe they just send them all to the PS just to keep guys that don't even see snaps.
Call Grant up!

Gay, Blake and Boykins are free agents in 2016. It will not be easy to keep Gay as we do not have a lot of cap space. Decent corners in free agency make a lot of money.

Either way you're right. CB, and S are huge needs. Going backward in talent for 2016 might happen. Lots of starters and too many depth guys are free agents.

Michael Vick QB 35 PIT TBD $585,000 UFA Retires. Sorry dog, your days are numbered...

Wow, that's a lot of players, here's my thoughts up top. Look for a lot of PS players from this year to be on the roster next year. Chick for Garvin, Grant for Blake, Golsen for Gay, Dangerfield for Will Allen. I like Phillips, but I like Nelson better.

The way Beachum has been handled doesn't exactly calm the fears about how this particular staff seems to favor a prototype athletic mold and draft position over actual performance on the field. Right or wrong it seems to fuel the "pedigree" argument...

The Steelers may favor a "prototype" but they have been playing Beachum. It's the fans who have been bitching about his pedigree.

I can't see us letting him walk...

He is the perfect type of starter they want...mid to late round draft pick that has played better than expectations, that they can sign to a "reasonable" second contract.
The Steelers FO will get something done for him.

I see more of a problem signing the DeCastros' and Bells' of the world, when needed, than the Beachums'...

3 Penalties and a sack in the first game is not what I call a good performance on the field. I am 100% ok with having Beachum play his 1.5 million dollar salary this year then bumping it up to 10 million next year via the tag. That would be less than a 6 million average for this and next year. If Beachum is still playing hardball come draft time I say draft a tackle early and see how they progress in camp. If you can't get a deal done you have a guy waiting in the wings. I don't want to overpay a guy just to have a guy. Beachum is an OK LT, not elite, not great, probably not even good by many teams standards. He is a very serviceable LT. Does that warrant a huge contract? HELL NO! Let his *** walk and take the comp pick before over spending on him. If he wants a 5-6 maybe 7 million dollar a year deal well that is probably what he is worth. If he wanted 7 million a year I am fine with making him earn in this year at 1.5 million with no guarantees if he wanted 5-6 million we should have paid him.

His advanced stats put him very high in the LT ranks. Him starting at LT coincides with our line becoming more stable. at 6'3" 303lbs, he is small by today's standards, but well within the size of older school LTs that handled simularly sized Dlinemen and LB's in the past. I think he is an above average LT and should be paid as such.. instead we will probably get Adams at LT next season...
