Beachum likely gone in 2016?

According to this link, the Steelers have a little over 7 million in cap space for 2016.

Now for the bad news. Beachum is going to be a free agent. He'll be looking for Franchise type of money.
Here's what the top LT's make:

As you can see the average amount of a top 10 starting Left Tackle makes about 10 million per year. Beachum will be asking for this amount in free agency...and he'll likely get it or come very close.

Translation: We can't afford Beachum right now. Thank you Colbert for giving so much to Cortez Allen and Mike Mitchell.
 
Yeah, it's a tough situation with Bell due after next season. Also, Decastro will be due as well?

At least the money has been well spent on the defense.

Colbert earned that extension, without a doubt.

You never know what happens behind closed doors. Best guess is the Steelers tried to extend Beachum, and his agent simply made a paper air plane of the offer letter.

The trouble is there are a few positions you don't mess with in the NFL. Left Tackle is one of them.

Coach, Punxy wasn't serious. I think that was a little Punxy sarcasm going on. We all know the money spent on Allen and Mitchell wasn't spent wisely. Damn, Punxy beat me to it.

You re-sign Adams and let Viilneauva and his battle for the LT job. Spend the money on Decastro and Bell and some FA moves. This is most likely what will happen.

I honestly do not think they can risk another Jonathan Scott/Mike Adams disaster at LT, jeopardizing what's left of Roethlisberger's prime.

Beachum needs to be the priority, IMO.

Bell and Decastro are better players, but Beachum is probably the most important of the three.

That's the thing, with the salary cap you have to pick and choose who you will keep. At least the Rats decided to spend all their money on Flacco.
 
I'm almost guaranteeing you what I suggested will happen. We can always draft a LT as well instead of resigning Adams.
 
It'll be yet another tag and rush to find a pen situation.

They have a bunch of moves to kick the can down the road, but Bell, Brown, and DiCastro are all due shortly and they will need to start drafting better.
 
extending DeCastro can free up about 5 millions at least
 
I'd rather sign Bell and Decastro and let Beachum move on. We will have to draft a LT in the first round but I'd secure DeCastro and Bell.
 
If Villa can be developed, he's your guy. Cheap, huge, and will free up cash for the skilled players. Don't worry about tagging RBs, they are cheap.
 
Guards I'm not worried about replacing.

LT's are a whole nother story - rebuilding the O-line at this stage of Ben's career is just plain stupid
 
With the way they can structure contracts, signing Beachum to a top-10 deal will not be the problem next year.
The problem will be getting the FO to agree that he is worth that money and actually offering it to him.
Obviously, this is the holdup at this point. Contract talks were already reported to have been ongoing with nothing being resolved.
Translation, Beachum's reps wanted more than the FO wanted to pay.

We'll see how it goes next offseason but losing the best LT we have had since Marvel Smith is not good.
This is Ben's last 4-5 years. I cannot go through watching what he was dealing with at LT for the last 5-8 years. It was brutal for a 5 year stretch there.
 
Hope he can be kept for 40 millions/ 5 seasons, I don't think he will be offered more than that

dont forget timmons In the bad deals. He has to be the most over paid player In the league the last five years
 
1. I don't think we can afford to pay Beachum what he will demand on the open market.
2. I believe Beachum and his agent know this.

Conclusion: Im sure we offered him something, but I can't blame the guy for wanting to get paid. This will be his first, and probably best chance at a big pay day. This is just the way the system plays out sometimes.
 
Why anyone is worrying about the salary cap status of next season right now is insane. The cap will go up along with restructured contracts and so on and so forth. Were not in salary cap hell anymore. Woodley and Polamalu come off the books too.

He's also taking a big risk. Just look at Jason Pierre-Paul, his entire $14.8 million tag money and career is now in jeopardy for holding out. A freak injury could cost Beacum a fortune all because getting 7 or 8 million per year now isn't enough. Paul's agent will get hit hard to, deservingly so.
