Ayers Injury

Coach says they're holding him out because he's too small and his head is too big...

As they say, if you're a bubble player you can't make the club from the tub.

But with Coates fighting for a roster spot, I think our Rudy receiver is going to need to stay healthy to make the final 53.

Now if he has an XL head...

wow....how brilliant....that has been posted a million times since the end of last season

I hope for all of them. I dont care who the best 53 are. Just as long as they are the best 53. I also feel bad for guys like Ayers and Golson but this is tough mans game and durability is certainly a critical factor.

rookies might alter this way of thinking a little

Oh for sure. You can get some drop off from a seasoned vet like DHB to a guy with huge upside like JuJu. At least on the first part of the season but there arent many circumstances where the best 53 arent on the roster.

Now that Coates is off the PUP, Ayers fans better hope his hands are still MIA. :)

The Steelers have given roster spots to injured players before...but only the more valuable players.

More than 2 1/2 weeks later, there hasn't been one word in the media about the nature of his injury. That's very strange.

I'm thinking it must be groin- or hamstring-related. But who knows? And he's been very quiet on twitter.

I do know that if they try to stash him on the practice squad, it won't work. I also know that he's a better athlete, and has a higher upside, than Heyward-Bey or Hunter. And he can run the kind of quick-hit routes - in traffic - that Coates can't.

I'd hate to see him go to another team. The Steelers would regret it.

Ayers could have shown enough in spring and limited last season to get passed DHB if they are looking to go young. Hunter apperently had a great camp and the TD he scored last week didnt hurt his cause. If Ayers isnt playing this week he is a hopeful PS squad stash again. Him and Golson can buy matching track suits.

Send your first aid package to Coolie in advance please.

Apparently he's back - for real - and will play in the preseason finale Thursday night:

Note: Alex Kozora of Steelers Depot is speculating that the Steelers would like to trade Hunter or even Coates, ideally for help at DB. So they probably know that if they try to stash Ayers on the practice squad they'll lose him.

Yes I just tweeted Tomlin the other day to make this happen. lol

Thanks Ghost............. I sure hope he really impresses not Just in his WR ability but hopefully in his return ability. That's the thing as for someone who had pretty good PR duty in college hasn't seemed to have gotten much chance here to show case himself. I hope he gets several chances in this last preseason game and makes the best of the oppertunities he gets. I don't know if he will make the 53 but if there is actually a trade of Hunter / Coates or both then that would mean a better chance for AYERS.

Salute the nation

David Todd is absolutely, positively certain that Ayers will be cut, make it through waivers, then be signed to the practice squad.

I agree that, barring a trade of another receiver - or maybe a return TD Thursday night - he'll be cut. But I don't think he'll make it through waivers. The Texans are really hurting at slot receiver, so there's one possible landing spot for him.

Anyway, David and I made a friendly wager on it.

There's just no room for him on the roster ahead of everyone else we have. Maybe he can get on the practice squad but its likely that he ends up elsewhere.

DHB has special teams skills Coates and hunter doesn't he's not going anywhere.

This should explain it perfectly.
