Steelers' Burns, 22: 'I definitely know I have' CTE
Mitch Sanderson Dec 13, 2017 5:46 PM
Pittsburgh Steelers cornerback Artie Burns was one of seven NFL players asked recently for their thoughts on CTE and concussions by Sports Illustrated, and he delivered the most chilling of responses.

When asked, "If a test to diagnose CTE existed, would you take it?" the 22-year-old said he didn't have to take the test because he knows the results.

"I definitely know I have it. I’m going to (test positive for) CTE. I don’t need a test," Burns said, who's in his second NFL season. "Is it going to tell me how much I have? We play a physical sport, man. Humans are not made to run into each other."

Along with Burns, veterans Kirk Cousins, Tahir Whitehead, Ryan Kalil, Chris Long, Dion Jordan, and Michael Bennett were asked for their thoughts. Only Jordan said he wouldn't take a CTE test if one were available, though he said he would want to know once he retired.

Jordan won't take one NOW because he doesn't want to interrupt the money-train. But 7 minutes after he retires... Ya, he's gonna want to sue the league for allowing him to play in such dangerous conditions.

Artie has CTE. From what? He plays corner. Hes asked to tackle a guy 4 times a game and he half whiffs twice. I know guys who played 4 years of high school, 2 years of Junior post secondary and 3 years of University at middle linebacker. Involved in probably 20 tackles or more per game. They are late 40s and fine. Cmon Artie I watch you play dude.

If he got it, it’s from his momma smacking him on the back of the head for his tackling.

hey now, whiffing on tackles can cause the brain to jostle around pretty badly, dontchaknow. . .

Maybe someone told him CTE stands for Cant Tackle Efficiently.

hehehehhh this guy right here, i like him. . .

I think the hysteria will start to die down. As you see from people like Burns, there now seems to be an acceptance that even if CTE is a risk, it is well worth it for the riches of the NFL. There are people doing jobs every day that will impact them later in life. Work construction for 30 years and see how good you feel getting out of bed each morning. Drive a truck and see how your lower back feels.

I don't trust these CTE scientists. Not to get political here, but it's similar to climate change in that many people are getting money to prove it exists, not simply to to research in the field.

Whenever you hear the term "settled science" you should call bullshit. Science is never settled. New information and discoveries happen all the time that change things. Einstein's theories are still just theories. So far they have not been disproven but that does not mean they are fact. Still, there are people who have worked to disprove his theories since they were first proposed.

That's how science is supposed to work. It's just a theory until it can be proven. You don't call somebody a "flat Earth-er" and demonize them for doing the real work of science and looking for holes in a generally accepted theory.

Look at all the various fads in food and nutrition. Eggs are the best thing you can eat, pure protein. No, eggs are horrible, never eat them, you'll die. Wait, just eat the whites. No, you have to eat the yolk to get the protein. It will change back and forth again and again.

If they did come up with a true test for CTE, I mean a test that is really accurate and doesn't just give you a vague maybe that allows you to scare 40% of the general public into funding your research, then i think the results might be the opposite of what people think.

Right now they find CTE quite often in ex-players, but that is because they are really only testing people who donated their brains because they already had symptoms. What would the % look like if they tested people with no symptoms? Would football players show at a higher rate than the general public?

We may also see that over time, symptoms could go away. It is known that people who smoke for decades can have their lungs heal themselves after quitting. The same may be true of CTE. It is still far from a settled science.

Tape, right now the only way to test, is after someone dies. The brain has to be biopsied and that can't be done in a living brain, or you'd lose function.

It is irrefutable that collisions cause the brain to swell. The repetitions of these swelling injuries damages the brain. Recent studies show, you don't even have to take a big hit to have CTE form from normal collisions. A brain is not like another body organ that can heal. If damage is done it can't be undone or improve over time since this organ is separated by the circulatory system. That's why so many brain diseases are degenerative. Some you can slow the negative effects, but you can't recover from any of them yet.

The amazing thing in CTE research is they are finding it in nearly all of the brains of professional football players. Boxers were known to suffer from it as well (since CTE was first diagnosed and found in the brains of boxers in the 1920s), but they are constantly taking blows to the head. Football was never supposed to be seen to be as dangerous as boxing. The interesting thing about studying football brains, is you see a dramatic increase in CTE brains the longer someone plays football. Of all the brains donated for this research, 21% had CTE in High School, 91% of college players, and 99% of pro players.

Stem cell research is the only thing showing the promise of regrowing brain cells. Hopefully that can be a cure down the road.

My sons play. One is a high school qb, the other is a linebacker/ DB in middle school. My advice is that you should stop at high school because at least in Canada there is no pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. CFL pay is less than I make for many of the players. University is under 10 k per year so you dont need a scholarship. Im either coaching or attending every game. If I believe you have taken some head shots either too many or too big, its over. However, I can also say that the game gives back a lot too. In a bubble wrapped world if you can ball up and have some courage and determination. You have a big advantage.

If he actually does he can join the what should be endless line to sue college football because there sure as hell no way he developed CTE in Pittsburgh.

That stuff all starts at the high school level. Maybe earlier.

Depending on how you play. How you tackle. I played like 6 years. I eas knocked out once and took some pretty good scramblers. Im 46. No effects. But some guys I played with who were much better and played 4 years of college slaming their head into a brick wall 25 times a game. Sure. But i talk to some of those guys most have no effects.

I didn't think you could get CTE by chasing receivers from behind.

I knew an O-Lineman at CMU who said after three years he noticed he'd "lost something". This was in the 80s. Came up when people were talking about how Sugar Ray Leonard started getting mush mouth. I don't doubt Artie.

That's funny...

Burns isn’t a doctor, he’s not even smart enough to play one on TV.

This is drama.

Even if he stayed at a Holliday Inn Express......................... He'd barely make Nurse's aid..............

Salute the nation

Artie Burns has not been in on tackle hard enough to knock a player down let alone CTE. I still don't get how any head coach or secondary coach can watch a tape of any of our games and see why he is starting.
