Art Rooney Speaks on Roethlisberger, and Bell

You could get Deion Lewis, and Alfred Morris for maybe a 1/3 of the cost that Bell is asking for, and likely get a better yards per rush.

Morris ran it 115 times, for 547 yards at 4.8 yards per rush. Much better than Bell's 4.0 per rush last year.

Dion Lewis ran it 180 times for 896 yards and 5.0 yards per rush.

Both were much better than Bell's 4.0 per rush last year. Lewis is also a good kickoff return man.

Aren't the Steelers either 2 or 4 million over the cap depending on the source? How can they afford 12+ million plus a huge signing bonus on one player without massive cuts and contract restructuring?
How are they blocking and pass catching?

I'd be willing to bet that if you double their number of carries, then they yards per attempt go down.....

Lewis can catch and run, with more big play ability. Bell can block well, but he does it seldom. I'd rather have our pro bowl FB blocking.

Who says you need to double their attempts? You spilt the work load and give them a similar amount of attempts. This way they stay fresh, instead of wearing down a little which Bell does.

Look at the 2 teams in the super bowl, or most other teams. They don't pay one man 15 million to run it, do they?

Force feeding and over working one back isn't the best way to win it. That's 1970-1984 type of football.

Steelers GM optimistic about new deal for Le'Veon Bell

Le'Veon Bell's contract situation has been one of the dominant storylines of the offseason so far, and signing the running back to a long-term contract is one of general manager Kevin Colbert's top priorities.

Speaking to reporters Thursday, Colbert said he was optimistic about signing Bell to a long-term deal. Colbert also has a clear message for Bell regarding his future with the team.

"We have a strong desire to keep you with the Pittsburgh Steelers for the remainder of your career," Colbert said, per NFL Network's Aditi Kinkhabwala.

Colbert also suggested the possibility of putting the franchise tag on Bell again this offseason before potentially signing him to a new deal.

"Even if you tag a player, you can still sign him," Colbert said. "It takes two sides to get it done."

It's no secret Bell doesn't want to play a second straight season under the tag, going so far to say he'd consider retiring over playing in 2018 under the designation. Colbert and the Steelers' brass are acutely aware of Bell's feelings.

While Colbert said Bell "didn't disappoint in any aspect" this season after not showing up to training camp, he wants his star running back to be in training camp this season: "It's important for every player to be here."

The franchise tag designation window opens Tuesday, and it's anyone's guess, at this point, whether both sides will hammer out a deal before the start of free agency.

In other Steelers news, linebacker Ryan Shazier continues to rehabilitate from a spinal injury he suffered in December. Colbert said he's been impressed with Shazier's spirit and attitude throughout the harrowing ordeal.

"Ryan does as much for us as we do for him," said Colbert, who added that Shazier meets frequently with coaches and personnel staff in the team facility. "The attitude he's shown is uplifting. ... Never once has he said, 'Why me?'"

Steelers owner Art Rooney II told reporters last week that Shazier will continue to have a role with the team in 2018.

I was listening to the Albert Breer podcast and both he and his sportscaster guest thought that $14M was much too high to pay for a back, even one as talented as Bell. Looking at the next best paid guys they are in the $7-8M range. Is he really that much better? They also stated that they both thought he was one of the best in the game.

Their suggestion was franchise him for another year and then cut bait - partly because they believe that he brings a lot of WR diva qualities with him that the locker room could do without - something I agree with. The other was franchise him and then get something for him.

This is the first time that I've heard any of the talking heads suggesting that we move on from Bell.

Thoughts?

Totally on board with this scenario..

In Fact..I have a hard time giving him the $14 million next year..

If we could get a top 5 for him....I would pull the trigger and try to get the our franchise QB.

pros:
Best RB in the league (run+block+catch)
OLine already adapted to his style
1st down machine

cons:
already in the substance abuse program, next hit is 4 games
14M for one player is A Lot when already having two ProBowl contracts in Ben and AB
Diva attitude

toughest choice for any GM out there, lose a SuperStar or overpay it crippling other urgent needs (Defense). If Shazier injury hadn't happened I wouldn't be so worried about the D but now there are two big holes to fill (that's what she said!) and I think at least half of Bell's money should be thrown at least to one of them.

Only way to keep him is with a 5 year contract with big bonus upfront. This would forfeit the cap for two years after Ben is gone but would give us a 3 year window to win it all

Franchise tag is too steep IMO especially if you want to do something on defense

I think if he is tagged it is just a delay, until the long term contract is worked out.
Agreed but both sides have to agree on the contract, I think the contract they offered him last year was a little steep and he turned that down

You should be banned for stupidity. There is no replacement for LeVeon Bell anywhere out there. If they don't get that deal done they may as well go full rebuild. The WR's aren't that wide open if the defense doesn't have to respect the RB being as good as most WR's on every down, as well as great running the ball. He's a once in a generation talent, and the best RB we've ever had. Sure, let him walk.

Really?.........I get that Bell is special. I disagree with you on we need him to win. I hope we do resign him but on the flip side I wouldn't be against the angle Coach suggested. Fact is though we are in a win now mode and having Bell is best for our Offense, but probably isn't for our Defense. Hopefully if he does sign long term we can sign a few mid tier FA's to fill a few holes on Defense and go heavy again in the draft on the defense side.

Bullshit. Just the opposite may be true. We break the bank on a running back, even a good one like Bell and we will end up suffering in the long run and maybe even short term if he screws up or gets hurt.

best RB we've ever had.
That's debate-able too

Way too risky if ya ax me.

who knows what Deion lewis is actually capable of . he plays for a team that everyone knows cheats. He never had a season with more than 4 TD's and last year he gets200+ touches for 9 TD's. Actually, last year, he had more TD's than the prior 4 years, total. His last year with them, Blount had 18TDs. on a SB winning team, he didnt come close this year. Odd.

Alfred Morris.has had 4 total TD's in the last 3 years.

you can't just sort the FA's by YPC and assume they are better or as good.

Totally agree.

It's weird isn't it that every RB that plays for the Patriots* suddenly runs like his family's lives depend on it. It makes it really hard to evaluate them for another team where they won't have the same level of pass first offense keeping the defense honest.

That and having a 30% to 70% or better chance of knowing what the defensive play call is. The RB may not know but Lance gets the signal and can audible into it if need be, definately helps all skill positions.

That's why they will always be the Patriots* to me.

The things is I'm sure a lot of the hype about Brady being the GOAT is justified - you can't cheat to all those completions and TDs, you still have to execute. My issue is that no one outside of Foxboro knows what to believe. As a result I just hate him and will never give him the credit he is probably due.

Let's just for sake of argument that the cheating, all aspects of it, gave him a 25% advantage. Take away 25% of every stat / win / SB(should be 75% gone) / etc.etc.etc.......... then what do you got???? Definitely not the GOAT. What percentage of HONEST ABE do we have and what percentage of cheating mother ****** do we have???? One thing is certain the percentage of douche bag is 100%.
