Apparently NBC was the only one dumb enough to want Tomlin’s “insight”.

Mike Tomlin signed with Sandy Montag in March, hired one of the most powerful agents in sports media, and waited for the offers to come in. According to Andrew Marchand on The Varsity with John Ourand, they mostly didn’t.

“There really wasn’t a lot of competition for Tomlin,” Marchand said. “That was the interesting thing. He’s a guy, who, you go back 10 years, you’re putting together a list and you say who’s the future? Mike Tomlin was always at the top of that list from most executives.”

Fox had been considered the favorite as recently as January, when Tomlin stepped down after 19 seasons, and the network was sitting on an open chair at Fox NFL Sunday following Jimmy Johnson’s retirement after 31 seasons. The fit seemed obvious, but as Marchand laid out, the market that everyone anticipated never materialized.

“ESPN didn’t bid,” he said. “Fox, I don’t think, actually, put in a bid at the end there. I don’t know if CBS even met with him. And so, Amazon didn’t have a spot.

The streamers that get floated in every one of these conversations — Netflix, YouTube — didn’t have the tonnage to make it work either. YouTube’s anticipated NFL packagefigures to be around five games, and as Marchand put it, what are you paying Mike Tomlin for five games?

NBC was the only network that came into the offseason with both a clear need and the willingness to act on it. Tony Dungy had confirmed he was leaving Football Night in America after the Super Bowl. As we previously reported, Rodney Harrison and Jac Collinsworth are unlikely to return, taking the entire on-site satellite studio with them, while Matthew Berry is also unlikely to returnto FNIA. NBC was also planning to move the show on location every week, abandoning the Stamford studio setup it had used for years. What emerged from all of that was a show that needed to be rebuilt around a single voice that could anchor it.

“I think he did very well from what I understand in terms of what he got paid,” said The Athletic’s sports media insider of Tomlin.

Who cares Bob?

Meh I wouldnt read too much into it.. Tomlin is widely expected to coach again... so networks arent gonna jettison guys for one or two years of him... Espn is reorganizing is game analysts due to the international thing, but not its studio ones... so they didnt have a spot... CBS wanted a ex QB to fill Ryans role, which is why they are looking at Russell Wilson... NBC was the only one looking for ex coach studio analysts right now...

Everyone thought Cowher would coach again.

I didn’t know what to expect as his wife was sick. I wondered how that would impact him.

I think the two situations were just an entirely different set of circumstances.

You seem jealous. Wyd for a living??

So much for the "Tomlin would have a new job in 5 minutes if he ever left the Steelers" argument
Big difference between TV and coaching. Absolutely no one was talking about tv when they made that comment and if someone has to explain that to you then this is conversation you should have simply sat out on.

Yes, same with Belicheat.. bit they were seen as short timers, so there werent bidding wars for them... in hindsight, dont you think if Fox and Espn had known Cowher was going to become what he did for the past 2 decades, they wouldnt have pushed for him back in 07?

These studio analyst panels are super formulaic. Ex QB Matt Ryan out, Ex QB Russell Wilson in... Ex Coach Tony Dungy out.. Ex Coach Mike Tomlin in...
each network has a little different optimal build for their crew, but its still all constructed with prototypical pieces ...
The edgy controversial ex player would be replaced by another in the same column would take his place.

Dungy was an ex coach that loved cliches... he had zero on screen charisma though.. also he pissed off the Pat lovers by slighting Belicheat... Tomlin speaks in way cooler cliches and had that room presence... he also loves him some Belicheat...

I highly doubt he will coach again, speculation and no receipts in possession.

I see him a little cautioned to begin with in his TV debut, but eventually falling into the same o’l..same o’l.

He will reach a little, the cliches will become more often, then most will tire of him.

About that time, some personal information will come to light.

Next thing you know he will be looking for that “have a job in 5 minutes” that’s been attached to him.

Salute the nation

...and what personal info would that be since youre so hell bent on cursing somebody's future rather then blessing them??

Tomlin will coach again... He is currently 54. Next year he will be 55.
He has 193 regular season wins and 8 playoff wins for a grand total of 201 wins
Don Shula has 328 regular season wins and 19 post season wins. Thats 347 wins total

Good coaches can last till their early 70's in the NFL

Assuming he can pull off an average win total of 9 per year and coached till he was 72, he could reach 356 wins and be the all time winningest coach...

This is more a Bil Parcells or Joe Gibbs situation than a Cowher IMO... Cowher had a career peak then a personal tragedy and his new girlfriend's lifestyle meshed with the TV thing more than him coaching.. there was no " unfinished business" to come back for...

Tomlin has stuff to prove.. he just burned out here...
