CLEVELAND — Bud Dupree was impressed. The man who filled in for him at left outside linebacker for the Steelers on Sunday had a game to remember in what was his eighth NFL start.

"Chick's the man," Dupree said after Chickillo had two sacks, six tackles and a punt-block recovery touchdown in the Steelers' 21-18 against the Browns win in their season opener.

If it seemed as if Chickillo was everywhere Sunday, that's in part because he virtually was. No player on either team was on the field for more plans than the third-year linebacker (82). The player on either team who played the second-most snaps was Sean Davis, the Steelers safety who played 74 (66 on defense and eight on special teams).

Chickillo sat out just four of the Steelers' 66 defensive snaps, and he appeared in 20 of their 25 special-teams plays.

Not bad for a guy who said he didn't find out he'd be playing a major role on defense Sunday until two hours before kickoff.

"I feel like I'm always prepared," Chickillo said. "I would put myself in the position where I feel like I can go in and compete and play at a high level."

Chickillo started in place of Dupree because of a shoulder injury to the latter. It was another reward for Chickillo, who was taken in the same draft as Dupree – but 190 picks later as a sixth-round choice.

Chickillo has become a core special-teams standout since, and he's also outlasted the departed Jarvis Jones and passed Arthur Moats on the depth chart and into a primary backup role on the defense.

Sunday, Chickillo made the absence of Dupree an afterthought on defense. And moments after Tyler Matakevich blocked Britton Colquitt's punt two minutes into the game, he became the unlikeliest of players to score the Steelers' first points of the season.

They also were Chickillo's first points, personally, in a long time.

"High school," he said. "I probably had a pick-six or I caught it as a receiver.

"I was caught by surprise, even though (special teams coach Danny Smith) did say we were going to block that punt. I'm just happy that we did. Tyler made a great play, and I jumped on it."

"It was awesome, man," Chickillo said later. "Anytime you can spark the team, it's a good feeling."

Five snaps later, Chickillo provided another spark, this time in the way of a sack of DeShone Kizer. He'd bring down the Browns rookie again later in the third quarter.

The two-sack game was another example of the depth the Steelers have at outside linebacker, arguably now the deepest spot on the team. T.J. Watt had two sacks and an interception in his NFL debut, Moats is a former starter and former NFL defensive player of the year James Harrison barely played Sunday.

"We feel like we've got a talented, young room and we've got to make plays when our number is called," Chickillo said. "We felt like we can be as good as we want to be on defense."

SUNDAY'S RESULT

Steelers 21, Browns 18

THREE STATS TO KNOW

1. The Steelers' yards per play in their past three games against Cleveland over the past 10 months are 4.9, 4.5 and 5.4. In only three of their other 14 games since the start of last season have the Steelers averaged fewer than 5.4 yards per play.

2. The Steelers have 32 sacks in their five games against Cleveland. In their past 17 games against all other opponents, they have 32 sacks.

3. Le'Veon Bell has 6,097 yards from scrimmage in his career, now the eighth-most in Steelers history, despite appearing in just 48 games (equivalent of three seasons).

SNAP COUNTS TO KNOW

Offense – TE Jesse James (54 of 60), WR Antonio Brown (51), RB Le'Veon Bell (43), TE Vance McDonald (18), TE Xavier Grimble (1)

Defense – S Sean Davis (66 of 66), S Mike Mitchell (44), S J.J. Wilcox (20), S Robert Golden (1), CB Mike Hilton (34), CB William Gay (26), CB Coty Sensabaugh (0)

I hate to say garbage sacks, but some of the teams sacks were just that. Not to take away from Chickillo as regardless of who it was he had a solid game.

I think he has improved. To what degree, hard to tell until you throw him in against a little better competition. But I look forward to him showing us just ho much he has improved overall.

As performances like yesterday will get you some looks. If nothing else in relief of a tired Dupree.

Kudos to Coach? He stated he would start from day one. Lol. Yep. Good call Coach.

He's on the bench once Dupree is ready to go. He had a good game. Can't take that away from him

I just wanted to show him its ok to say you are wrong from time to time. I do see some improvement in his moves looks like he is growing. And yesterday wasnt against scrubs. So i give props. Hopefully he can continue when given the chance. My issue was he looked great against scrubs but not when the real action started

While I don't believe on any level that Chickillo is an upgrade over Dupree, These are the kind of quotes that make an athlete pay more attention to his rehab regimen.

Chicky is who he is. Coach said he would be starting week 1 his rookie year. Nobody ever said he would not be a good back up eventually. He is better now than in his rookie year. That's easy to agree with. It is called development. No reason to give props to Coach though.

Bud looked good in sweats, he was all over the sidelines

Chick has worked hard from day one... came in at over 270 a de in college he had to slim down but get stronger... not easy.. learn a new position... not easily... get thrown into the lineup last year before he was ready... not easy... but in camp looked like his hard work paid off he was actually playing like a linebacker not just a pass rusher.... we will need good minutes from him if we're going to run deep and yesterday looks like we're going to get em! Goooooosteeelers!!!!!!!

It was his best game as a pro. They type of game Jarvis Jones never had. After a game like this, you wonder if Chickillo can do it again. How many games has Chickillo started? If Bud is still hurting, I say let's find out.

Dude,

I never said he should be starting in week one as a rookie. Call me out right or wrong, but please do not make stuff up.

I agree...It was a very solid effort and nothing was handed to him for draft status...R/B------

I think Chick provides nice depth at OLB and I think he should push Dupree. If Dupree can't get the job done bring in Chickillo and see if he can.

Coach has always been consistent with his vision for Chicky. He wanted Chick to get more reps and more opportunities to start when Dupree was injured and instead of trying to go with Jarvis. He also never called Chick a saviour, instead he wanted him to get the starts so he would improve and see what he can do. Plus he did correctly point out that Chick had more upside to Moats in getting experience to start.

Personally, I think Chick has been brought up correctly, and he showed this preseason that he is ready to be thrust into action. Hopefully he will continue to improve this year as well!

This sums it up. Dupree is an amazing athlete, but I still wonder if he's durable enough and to an extent smart enough to reach his potential. At times he looks amazing, then he disappears. It's it because he's hurting, a little mediocre on the effort, or just not bright enough to be in the right place at the right time? I don't know. Perhaps a bit of all of the above.

Chickillo comes from a football family and wasted time with a terribly coached UM program. Joey Porter loves him, and he's the position coach. We can not afford for Tomlin, who picks who starts to be loyal or late to promote the right man.

Even though I am a Chickillo fan ( I have an " in " with a top UM alumni ) I made no bones about wanting TJ in round one because I really believe in him.

TJ's got some Kevin Greene in his as a pass rusher, with a great motor and strong hands to disengage, and perhaps, a Jack Hamm level IQ as a linebacker. I'm not saying he'll be a HOF of fame player, just comparing parts of their game to his that Steeler fans are familiar with. Watt is a pretty good athlete as well, and damn, he's got some long and powerful arms.

56 had a great game. Solid performance on D but his special teams were excellent. You have to like that. He knows his role. Now the Browns left tackle wasn't typical starter material but Chickillo hustles. Any player who hustles will make plays. TJ however, was schooling a All-Pro LT who was getting TE help (if you call it that). He and 56 were in the backfield all day. Hargrave as well...he may play himself on as 3rd down lineman on certain scenarios. He is a great pick for this defense.

#56 is going to be a RFA after the year. I think the way he is playing will make it hard for the front office not to extend him or at the very least put more than the original draft pick tender on him. I think a second round tender is like 2.7 million and at this point (early in the season) I would at least do that.

Why do I get a feeling a team like New England picks him up in free agency, and he turns into an even better player?

Lets see if Bud and Watt can stay healthy, Harrison won't be here next year unless he's an ast coach.

Maybe but if I am Cobert I would at least 2nd round tender him. I feel that is enough to scare off the Pats and other teams. 2018 is Buds last year under his rookie deal unless the team activates his 2019 option. Which I believe they have to do this spring. To me that means Bud and Chick are fighting it out this year. Right now I would not use the club option on Dupree but that doesn't mean that opinion is set it stone as it's only week two going on three. This is a good position for the Steelers to be in once and for all having a plethora of young pass rushers and lets not forget about Shazier the question is can Cobert find a way to keep the core of guys together?
