So i read slashes post about how to fix the steelers, etc.

then i came across this article about signing FA Derrick Johnson, who is 35 yrs old.

https://247sports.com/nfl/pittsburg...perfect-fit-for-Pittsburgh-Steelers-115085031

AND

Im thinking slash had the right of it, sign a FA and draft one high.

Well im not up on who is what in the draft or in FA.

So I thought maybe some of you guys are. What or who is your solution?

Do you have a FA who would be a great fit? Why?

If you have a FA fine. Post that. Try to keep your possibilities low. Try and post a favorite pick you like in an early round., You dont have to.

This isnt a draft thread. This is a thread about answering the question at ILB. Shaziers shoes if you will.

......

I think 35 is a bit old to sign someone to fill shaziers shoes. I think we need the speed. I think V. Williams is an adequate thumper in the middle.
As for an answer inside. I dont really know the FA's coming available. But i think i would like to see us sign a larger strong safety who maybe has lost a step. That is coming loose from a team.. We need the speed and coverage, but also big enough to make tackles.

He would look good in black and gold..........

Isnt Timmons younger? Wouldn't he be cheaper option as a stop gap?

League minimum?

I like Avery Williamson of the Titans. Young (25 I think) but tenured enough and they say he's got great football IQ (can make all the calls). Excellent tackler. Played under LeBeau so the transition would be pretty smooth I'd think. Only downside I hear is what he's apparently going to get on open market (hearing $7 million per range). But ILB and Safety are in desperate need of upgrade so if they like the guy enough, grab 'em.

Steelers Depot@Steelersdepot

The #Steelers have only signed one defensive free agent that was 30 years or older dating back to 2000 that had never played for the organization previously. That player was linebacker Mike Jones, who the team signed back in 2001.

And they're just not going to sign a 35 year-old FA going by their history. Who knows though.

I like this option. Jets ilber Davis is another.

Would love to see this happen. Williamson is a baller. Just not sure about his status. Being he may be a RFA. Not sure how Omar and Colbert would orchestrate the contract

Yeah I'd really like to it happen too. He's a UFA from what I've read. But again, if his range is what I listed above, someone's gonna pay him and it won't be the Steelers unfortunately. Who knows though. They really need a talent like him in the middle of that defense.

I don't think he is a top 30 free agent. I am not expecting to have to break the bank to sign him. Plus the Steelers are a fairly attractive team to come too. If he is looking for a chance at a ring.

I think at this point, I wait to see the RFA class, and I contemplate making an offer to a younger ILB while giving up a draft pick to get him. No first round tenders obviously, but this is an option we need to look at seriously.

I think there is only Joe Thomas, Packers. From what limited info I have on him is he is known to be their coverage LBer. Maybe someone else can chime in more. More choices at UFA this year than RFA.

We aren't going to sign anyone but a bottom tier guy. That's the way I see it, unfortunately.

JUST say NO to Johnson. NO !!!! Used up, slow, old, but still better than anything we got at ILB. But we can get WAY WAY better for nearly the same price Johnson will want unless he is looking for one last payday before retirement but even then, JUST say NO to Johnson. NO !!!

I think that is directly tied to what happens to the BELL negotiations. FO has brought in FA, look at last year's Joe Haden. If we have the money, we will USE it and bring in for our biggest need. Like to see a S also and then draft both.

I disagree, if they replace Mitchell it won't be with a bottom tier guy, more like middle of the pack type upgrade(s) that will upgrade the position but not break the bank.

Your bottom tier guys come in for depth, which is the usual route. But this isn't a usual situation. One S is declining and one ILBer needs replaced. ILBer will not be a scrub I promise you that. S could be bottom tier if MItchell stays another year. I don't see it happening. We'll see.

To me only thing that makes sense is bringing in two upgrades, I think you are shorting yourself with anything less.

$7 million per for a legit starter isn't bad. Shazier is getting $8.5 on his fifth year option and the ILB they pursued last year wanted $10+ million, I believe. I would take a shot at getting him but not sure where we would get the money. We still need to clear room to sign Bell.

when the boss comes out and basically says the run defense better be better, you cant go bottom guy here. look for them to make a move on a top ILB in free agency. whom is yet to be determined.

more confirmation...

In order to compete, we need a new person at ILB and at S.

I think you can get a rookie at S and still be able to compete as he can make up with athleticism what he might be missing with knowing the D inside and out.

An ILB that needs to call the D, needs someone experienced in the moving pieces, even if that experience was gained in another system. You may get lucky and get a Rookie who can do all that, but I'd think this is the exception rather than the rule.

As such, an FA ILB is more important, IMLTHO, than a FA S.

If they don't cut Mitchell, someone needs kicked in the head.

Gotta have someone who can step in and play right away. That's the only thing I will add to the conversation. We may go sign someone and then again they may hold onto JJ Wilcox this year and start him with whoever they draft waiting in the wings to take the spot.
