Demarcus Ayers (and Matakevich) signs his Rookie deal today

Rookie seventh-round picks Demarcus Ayers and Tyler Matakevich are the first draft picks to sign.

The Steelers signed seventh round draft picks Demarcus Ayers and Tyler Matakevich to four-year contracts, the first two of the team’s seven draft picks to sign.

Ayers, the wide receiver/returner from the University of Houston, and Matakevich, a linebacker from Temple, arrived in Pittsburgh on Thursday to participate in the Steelers three-day rookie minicamp at the UPMC Rooney Sports Complex and immediately signed.

Ayers finished his Houston career third in career kickoff return yards with 1,613. He was named to The American Conference first-team as a receiver and return specialists in 2015 when he started all 14 games, leading The American and finishing sixth in the nation with 98 catches for 1,222 receiving yards.

“It’s good to have this done,” said Ayers. “Not it’s just football. I am very excited to be in town. I have ready to have some fun, ready to learn from my new teammates and learn from the coaches. I am ready to get at it.”

Matakevich finished as Temple’s all-time leading tackler with 493 stops and became the first Temple defensive player to earn first-team All-America honors. He received both the Chuck Bednarik Award and Bronko Nargurski Trophy, given to the nation’s most outstanding defensive player in 2015.

“I am definitely excited. It’s a dream come true,” said Matakevich. “I can’t wait to get out there and get that shot that I have always dreamed of. It’s been a whirlwind this week. It’s what you work your whole life for, this opportunity. I am thrilled to be here and be able to play for this incredible organization.”

He better not flame out like Rainey (on field stuff not off field)

In all honesty, both of these 7th rounders have a better chance of making them team than the average 7th rounders we take.

That being said, which WRs and ILBs will miss the final roster if these guys make it? That could be tough.

And is Ayers our "annual obligatory tiny guy pick" to satisfy Haley's obsession with using midgets?

I've never seen a Patriots fan so enamored with our team.

Think Ayers has less to do with Haley and more to do with the FO/coaches not wanting to subject AB to additional hits as a return man.

Your act is played out, repetitive, tired...just repeating the same thing forever really doesn't add value to this place. Sometimes original thought is more interesting.

Rainey wasn't a pure WR, Ayers is a completely different type of player.

If he stays healthy I think he sticks.

7th rounders in the house!

posting multiple times complaining about a "tiny" draft pick or "hanging on to players too long" is also tired and repetitive and not really "original"

Good luck and fast learning to them. Step up the competition is always good for the team.

Salute the nation

I like Ayers a lot. After watching some film on him he is elusive, has great vision and makes quick decisions returning punts, ALL more important than speed om punt returning.s a reciever he looks pretty gpod and looks like the kind of guy that will be a sponge around AB picking up pointers and work ethic.

I'm hoping Ayers can hold down the return man job. But....It's hard for me to get my hopes up on a guy until I see him do it at this level, aka Limas. That mother ****** had so much promise coming in here and had the demons in his head.
He's ruined my rookie optimism.Lol

P.S.
Pop, things would be easier if you would just come out of the closet.

Good luck to both of them.

would it?

homoErectile would carry on about how is wardrobe was better than yours while his patriot attire was tucked in the back all hidden from view

now I am not saying pop is fagoli as I haven't confirmed with his boyfriend

I like Matakevich. He gets to the ball carrier aggressively. He looks like he has a pretty good shot in the NFL.

I will be honest. I had a solid 3rd round grade on Ayers when I thought he'd run a 4.5 or sub forty. When he ran 4.72 I took him off my board. Looking back I'm glad the Steelers took him. Antonio Brown ran slow at the combine and that worked out for us. See Ayers is a football player not a track star. He has functional football speed. I'm not saying he's the next AB but that late in the draft you are not going to get a guy with huge production and ran crazy fast.

Good pick and I hope he can win our punt and kick return duties.

Tall order to say the least. Poor guy has 3,359 more responses and 168 pages to go.

Ohhhh. Wait.
He is just beginning.

I DVR'd the Senior bowl from months ago and just watched the game - Sean Davis made the first play of the game a big one - a stuff tackle coming up and lifting a TE off his feet and planting him... Matakevich was making tackles all over the field! He looked good. Mayock was praising him for his nose for the ball instincts.

I knew I saved this game for a reason, got lucky a lot of our picks are playing. Good stuff
