By G.Stryker SteelerNation.com Tevin Jones is a big receiver at 6’2” and 225 lbs. He was a deep ball threat at Memphis where he averaged around 14 yards per catch. He didn’t have a whole lot of productivity, but he still competed in the 2016 combine where he ran a 4.48 40-yard dash and jumped […]

Your darkhorse to make it? or are you thinking PS ?

Nice write up G. I think another year on practice squad. No solid reasoning other than our receiver Corp's is pretty congested. This will be one of my favorite battles to watch in TC as to how it plays out of who makes / cuts / PS's. Looking forward to hearing.

stash on ps if he and mason or Dobbs make any big splash plays and if and try to try him on some of the we used with Bryant if he runs 4.48 lkike reverse flea flicker

I figure there are 5 WR positions most likely locked up so to make the team he will have to do some work on ST. I like that he has some blocked punts...one of those in a preseason game will certainly catch some eyes. Unfortunately, its gonna be a tough numbers game for that 6th WR spot. I like his size for sure. He was drafted in 2016 I think the article said which may have some implications in being on the practice squad. It depends on how many years he has officially accrued and how many they can keep with two accrued years on the PS. Definitely a numbers game for him even after he shows enough for consideration.

I see JuJu/Washington/DJ/DM as locks. So it is possible not sure if likely, but possible someone overtakes Switz amd or Eli.

I think Switz is a lock. They seemed to try to find creative ways to use him last year and I think they will keep drawing up a few to use his quicks.

Does seem that way, thing is DJ might take away some of his return looks. But I like his hands and get open/effort.

you are right, DJ could take some returns from him. Maybe it was just me watching last year, but they seemed to try very hard to get Switz involved in the offense as a kinda gadget guy. I think the coaches (and Ben) are a bit enamored with his quicks/speed which is why I think he is a lock on the 5th WR spot, but its just my opinion. My concern with him has always been size. We will know in about 2 more months. Damn, camp can't get here fast enough.

He's purely a Z, and we have a few of them. Washington, Griffey, Horton and Tevin (though Horton can probably flex to the slot if needed, and they tried Wash in the slot last TC). I think the Z is wide open and no way do I give Washington a spot without earning it. Jones had some catches last year in the preseason, but he's the darkest of darkhorses right now. I think Griffey is more athletic, Horton is more experienced, and Washington knows the offense (over 500 snaps last year). If the Steelers keep 5 WRs, it means we're only keeping one Z. Griffey and Tevin may be PSed again as a break in case of glass emergency option for losing the Z to injury, that makes the roster.

Edit: our backup Z last year was pretty much inactive all year (Justin Hunter)

And Hoot, with DJ and Spencer coming in as slot capable, outside capable, return capable receivers, Switz and Eli are going to have an uphill battle to make the roster strictly as slot/ returners. It's gonna be a hell of a fight, and it may be decided by injury (like last year when Eli went down and we traded for Switz).

agree injury is a concern as always (especially given Switz's size). I am not down on Rogers like a lot of fans. I just think the team favors Swtiz. Rogers has been in the revolving door a little bit. Switz they have a bit more invested with the trade (fifth wasn't it? I dont' recall) and they seemed to find ways to use him as the season evolved. Time will tell of course, but I think he is a lock (injuries aside).

Cope, I recall last year during one of podcasts from TC, (Tunch was a guest) and he thought Jones was in the same mode as Hunter, but without the hand size. Now Hunter hands weren’t great anyway, but they weren’t small either. Jones hand size a problem with his chances?

Agreed. Switz is one of our best pickups we've had entering a season. We replaced 3 positions of need with the trade (Slot/KR/PR), so it's worth that 5th and then some! He also showed he's versitile and can block, run the ball, etc. He's that gritty guy we've been missing in the receiving corps.

I know it's easy for all of us to forget Eli, but when he's healthy, he's a legit pro receiver (Excellent catch radius and 2nd best hand mechanics on the team). 16' he had 48 catches on 66 targets for 594yds and 3 TDs.

Compared to Switz last year 36 on 44 targets for 234yds and 1TD

So in their best seasons on the Steelers, Eli has better yardage, TDs YD/Catch YDs/game. Switz has a better catch %

Still, it's gonna be a dogfight.

I loved Hunter's hands, and it was why I had him making the roster. He just couldn't translate his TC talent to the field. I think the thing working against Jones isn't his hand size, it is inexperience. I'm really excited to see what he can do this year in camp. Last year Trey Griffey was ahead of him too, so next up off the PS would have been Griffey IMHO.

Followed Hunter since he was with Tennessee Vols and Titans and always felt like he was oozing with potential but teased it more than showing consistently.

If Switz loses the return gig, he becomes more seceptable to making the roster. I want Johnson returning punts so we will see what happens in that regard. Eli, right now seems to be the weakest last WR to make it.
