Anatomy of a WR: Justin Hunter

From all the practices I have been to, a lot in the last week. Hunter is the mixed bag as reported in this thread. Seems to have started strong but faded. He will have to have show better consistency in the preseason games to stick IMO>

Could very well go down to the 53 cut downs for a decide.

he did what he had to do...came out early and made some splash plays...but catching only 4 out of his last 10 shows a lack of consistency......we shall see how the games go

How many of those dropped passes were from a QB not named Roethlisberger?

How many of those dropped passes were from a QB not named Roethlisberger?

does it matter?? Ayers is getting reps with the back up QBs and he catches just over 68% of the balls thrown his way

and they are not necessarily drops...just incomplete passes

50% is broken finger Coates territory, but in practice, not games where the D is trying to kill you.

Once Coates or Hunter is traded to the Jets, that'll help Ayers' chances of sticking.

I don't look too much into practice drops. They are rated differently than game drops. Game drops are usually legit drops within a players catch radius, and Passes Defensed are properly listed as not a drop when the defender gets a hand in to knock the ball away after contact with the receiver.

In practices people tend to list anything that hits a receiver as a drop. I do know reading Hunters plays in the daily camp diaries that he is being hotly defended/interfered with on plays. Those plays will touch him and hit the ground, get ruled a drop, when the defender was clearly draped on him before the ball gets there. I also don't know if the receiver is getting credited for a drop when they are trying to make plays on poorly thrown balls at the extension of their catch radius, to get a finger on it, with no legit chance of making a catch.

My point is, there is no clear rate of what a drop is in camp, but there is in a game.

Something I didn't know.

I was scrathin' my head as to why a second round 6'-4" WR lands in our lap like a bouquet at a wedding.

Bar fights are not really a big deal to a Pittsburgher ( 'specially old mill hunks ), but felonious assault charges are most often serious stuff to professional athletes...jus sayin'

Then I read this comment...

Hunter: “I had like five quarterbacks when I was in Tennessee.”

Hunter, of course, isn’t wrong about the number of quarterbacks he had in Nashville.

Ryan Fitzpatrick, Jake Locker, Zach Mettenberger, Charlie Whitehurst and Marcus Mariota all started for the Titans during Hunter’s time with the Titans.

But there’s no way Hunter can use that as an excuse for why he didn’t live up to expectations.

Take a look at some of the seasons that Titans wide receivers had from 2013 to 2015.

Kendall Wright — 94 receptions — 1,079 yards (2013)
Nate Washington — 58 receptions — 919 yards (2013)
Kendall Wright — 57 receptions — 715 yards (2014)
Nate Washington — 40 Receptions — 647 yards (2014)
Doral Green-Beckham — 32 Receptions — 549 yards (2015)

It’s clear that Tennessee’s quarterback situation didn’t help Hunter’s production. But it’s also clear that Hunter had opportunities to be the top wide receiver on the team and he failed to make the most of his chance. Hunter was outplayed in 2015 by 31 year old Harry Douglas. That doesn’t exactly inspire confidence that Hunter will turn the corner with Pittsburgh in 2017.

We could use this guy, especially if Bryant punks out but we gotta know this ain't no slam dunk.
