When the Pittsburgh Steelers hired Karl Dunbar as their defensive line coach, they hired a man whose knack for details, were comparable to those of offensive line coach Mike Munchak. Throughout his career as a defensive line coach for several NFL teams, most notably with the defending National Champions Alabama Crimson Tide, Dunbar has always […]

Thats a great article. Im not sure the coaching will be better as Mitchell was very good. But perhaps a different message or point of emphasis will help. My opinion of the run game was this. Right early in game one Tuitt literally walked his man straight back into the backfield and forced tge running back into a five yard loss. However on the play or shortly after he injured his triceps and went from what should have been a pro bowl season to an at best average one. So you had Heyward. Tuitt not himself and they just didnt get much out of Hargreaves and Aloualou (who did flash at times) but got creased too much.

This is a good read and thanks to the work involved. I do hope our line migrates into better run defense. NEW coaching blood may take a little time to define what he wants the players to do and they need a little time to accept and perform to those details. I see an improved run D based on the fact Tuitt should be healthy and combined with new coaching blood. Our DEFENSE has been stale and new coaching might inject new hope. Joey needs freshened.

We need a better 2 gap run defending nose tackle and a Speedy ILB with side line to sideline range that can tackle. Our run defense was terrible with out Shazier.

So we lack a true NT to stuff the run, and the ILB to cover what is needed to in the 4-3. Both of these major issues were NOT addressed in the draft or free agency.

I think with the full cupboard of talent we have at DL, it should make the new coach's job much easier than rebuilding a program with new talent. I'm interested to see how his 7th Rd draft pick, that he hand picked, will do in our system.

I think you will have to wait a year. I guess Aloualou has position flexibility but my guess is that new guy goes PS. Im fine with hum over Big Dan who has been a big nothing though.

I doubt Frazier can male an impact ( our 7th round pick ) He was a back up in college who played in less than 18 percent of the defensive snaps over last two seasons. Frazier is described as slow with little athleticism in his body. We had a chance to pick a productive DT/NT in round three but passed.

And you know sometimes a unit gets renewed energy with a new coach. Keeps them on their toes. Perhaps pushes them just a little harder.

If this is the case it damn sure would be welcomed to see that run D surely benefiting.

I hear ya, but there's a reason why his coach wanted him to come with him to Pittsburgh.
