So, I just listened to an audio feed (I don't know how old it is,) of you dressing down Jerome Bettis for calling the **'s "known felons". It was on a first take segment. While you offhandedly admit that the **'s did cheat with the whole spygate thing, You became quite passionate in your description of the **'s success since they were discovered using unauthorized camera's in spygate scandal. You demand (the emphasis is mine, but based on the verve of your segment, I think it's appropriate,) that people respect the accomplishments of the **'s since they "whooped folks butt".
You suggest other teams don't have T*m Br*dy, they don't have C**ch H**d**. They don't have Rob Gronkowski. All this is true. However during your long and no doubt well-rehearsed speech you don't allow Bettis or anyone else to respond. Well, allow me a moment of your time that I might ask a couple of questions that are pertinent to the "known felon" situation.
Why? Why were the **'s using unauthorized cameras? What was the competitive advantage they were hoping to achieve? What exactly was SO damning on the confiscated tapes the commissioner Goodell felt he had to literally DESTROY them so no other team could ever exploit the competitive advantages that were therein outlined?
Who? Who is Ernie Adams? What is his official capacity with the team? What are his responsibilities in particular?
What? What happened to the other half of the complaint made by (then) Jet's coach Eric Mangini. Specifically the complaints about radio signal and equipment interference. Why was this not investigated and reported on with equal tenacity?
Let me explain to you and (once again) anybody else who cares to pay attention to what the **'s REALLY did with those unauthorized cameras and WHY commissioner Goodell needed to destroy all the evidence as quickly as he could.
The **'s like most teams keep film of the plays on the field as they develop. They also keep film of the scoreboard display showing game situation. This allows them (like all teams) to sync up the play on the field with the specific game situation.
Now, the additional "unauthorized camera" was used to capture hand signals and any other communication from the opponents sideline during the game. This information is illegal. With all three of these three pieces of information a highly analytical team could put together a master game film that broke down each play, showed the specific game situation and included any voice signals and/or hand signals from the sideline.
With THAT information an offensive OR defensive coordinator could decipher specific vocal or hand signals given enough information.
Now, let's consider Mangini's "lost" radio signal complaint. What if the **'s were also stealing audio signals in to the QB's? What if THOSE signals were also being recorded and included in that master tape?
What if those tapes were saved over several years, refined until all the signals, vocal and gestural were known for a given team and could be interpreted by somebody who knew them?
Then you'd need somebody who could learn that information. Someone who could process all that mass of data and quickly access it as the signals were passed over the headset to the QB or on the field with hand gestures or from the coordinators mouth.
But who could do that? Who could remember the play-calling language and parlance of 31 other teams in the league? Even if a team had taken the time, years really to amass that kind of data and break down the plays to learn what each signal meant, who was blitzing, who was going into zone coverage. Was it going to be a run play, would it be a pass? To whom?
Were you aware, Stephen, that Ernie Adams has a photographic memory? I imagine not. It's one of the unique things about him. He's the kind of guy who can memorize massive amounts of information quickly, and retrieve it instantly, even during a live game. He could, for example hear a playcall over a stolen audio signal and then call down to a defensive or offensive coordinator and tell him what the other team was planning to do.
That coordinator could in turn tell his QB or defensive captain what play to run to best counter the opposing teams plan. Of course the players still have to execute. It doesn't guarantee results, it merely increases your odds immensely.
And if Commissioner Goodell saw a tape with all that information on it, you can bet he'd destroy it immediately because he would know exactly what it meant. He'd tell his good friend Bob Kraft to knock it off, get rid of the evidence and stop the taping. He'd fine the coach, take away a couple of draft picks and make a big show of it. And then it would all be over. Nobody would really know what had really happened.
Except that in the NFL, coaching trees are pretty vertical. The language doesn't change much and it takes a long time for it to filter down. And most importantly, the **'s still bring more radio equipment to games than any other team in the NFL.
So ya. They're known felons.
Get off your high horse. They don't deserve any more respect than any other guy got caught cheating.
