An interesting perspective on Position coaches

He went so we could get a even better RB coach in Saxon?

There was definitely something more than the eye could see about Wilson leaving. It was rumored at the time that he was in line for the Steelers OC job when he got burned pretty bad in a fire at home. Haley was hired for the OC job instead. Wilson tried to get the OC job in Baltimore, two interviews to no avail . Zimmer took over in Minn., canned Saxon and we ended up switching RB coaches. Some bad blood......maybe, we'll never know.

And that was that..news at 11

The running backs were largely a disappointment under Wilson, IMO. Not to say that Saxon is the reason Bell had a great season--I credit Bell's offseason training program--a change wasn't a bad idea. It is hard to ignore the rumors that Wilson was next in line to become OC as well and it may have had something to do with that.

The RBs were terrible at blitz pickup under Kirby.

If Archer can make the jump in his Sophomore season, then Saxon is a GOD!!!!!

If there was bad blood between him and the organization they would have likely retired him and given him a care package after he was burned. The fact that he left may have been nothing more than a look for a change so he could advance his career somewhere else. He was obviously not up to the job due to the fire and when Haley filled it he may have read the tea leaves and decided that he missed his chance here. It looks like Haley will be here for a while. I wonder if the front office is looking for more changes after this season. MT has not been extended yet neither has Colbert and there are two former head coaches on the staff now. It could mean nothing and MT will get an extension or new contract at the end of the season.

Bwahahaha....If I can remember correctly, I have seen this subject ( possibility ) bantered about before but the two former coaches part is a new twist.

Right now it is hard to guess what is in the mind of the ownership regarding the staff as there are lots of relatively new faces, coaches that have been here less than 5 years. It could be that a case could be made to keep the guys in the last year of the contracts for continuity, or that one of the other guys may get a promotion. I suspect we will see as the season unfolds. It might even mean the steelers have their eye on someone and want to see if he is available after the season.

I suspect this could be an interesting year for the team.

More than once Cowher was extended during the summer (camp) prior to the last season remaining on his contract. So, MT being in this situation could mean something ... or it could mean nothing. Speculation at this point is kinda pointless since "nothing" has leaked out in either regard.

I think it means we just want something to talk about other than marsha**

IIRC, Tomlin's contract was extended in late July both times he signed an extension. I'd expect him to sign one around the time camp begins.

Correct me if I'm wrong here but wasn't Tomlin more of a Dan Rooney hire than a Artie III hire? If memory serves me correctly, wasn't the rumor that Artie offered Grimm the job but Dan overturned it in favor of Tomlin. If that was indeed the case then Tomlin is really not Art's guy here is he? Could get interesting if he does not receive an extension this summer.

Speculation abounds and Coach isn't pissing all over himself?

Maybe he is just not telling us and enjoying the brief warm feeling. All kidding aside it is hard to say what will be going on right now there is nothing to say that the contracts might not be done till the end of the season. It is not like the coach can go to free agency like a player and he might be much happier staying here even if his team waits till after the last game to do the contract thing.

Disappointment? He got run out of Isaac Redman and Jonathan Dwyer and while Mendenhall may not have live up to fans expectations, I think his final years in the league showed his priority stopped being football and started being...something else. Wilson did fine. There were other reasons behind his departure.

Yes. Wilson wanted the OC job, but couldn't get it because of his recovery time. He didn't think he was going to get an opportunity while in Pittsburgh so he went to a place where an older OC w a little less volatile head coaching history was in place.

I've heard inside both the Vikings and the Steelers the play is Wilson is Turner's heir apparent in Minnesota, so he had more of a chance to move up. Good coach, good guy who just had a bad accident at a horrible time. Some feel he is the Steelers OC if not for that fire.
