AAF shut down & XFL start up..............

The NFL does need a developmental league. The product on the field has gone downhill since they virtually outlawed hitting in practice.

College used to teach football but they don't anymore. At least nowhere near as much. Now all the college coaches figured out that you don't have waste your time teaching fundamentals when you can just spread the field, have a running QB and college defenses can't stop you.

OL used to be one of the safest picks your could make. Not today. Now half these guys have to be taught how to block because all they do in these spreads is sit in a 2 point stance and just get in somebody's way for the 2 seconds it takes their QB to make the pre-determined throw that the coach signaled in from the sideline.

It used to be that development was needed for QBs. It always took time for them to develop and since you only play 1 QB, it's tough to get game reps for backups.

But now you need development of all positions because colleges arean't teaching the basics anymore.

We all know what happened to the AAF. The fledgling startup league is no longer fledgling. In fact, it's essentially dead as teams raid the AAF's rosters and sign them to deal - and the CFL is getting involved too. I'll make a statement that will get me on Cold Takes Exposed real quick:The XFL has a better chance of survival than the AAF. Here's why:

They've already failed before

Ever do something the first time and fail miserably at it? What happens next is usually you learn from your mistakes and use your experience to make sure you don't make the same mistakes next time. The XFL failed once. They know what they did well. They know what they did poorly. They know where they overreached and they know where they need to push the things they succeeded at. The experience helps. Plus . . .

The XFL can learn from the AAF's failures

The XFL just saw a league fail on the biggest stage. There was a ton of hype around the AAF, but it seemed like they didn't really have a vision other than people will want to watch football. First, they were a complementary league and then they were a developmental league for the NFL. They had television deals with too many networks making it hard to find the games on television. They were into gambling but not enough to make any headway. They had some connecitons but didn't leverage those connections.

The XFL can also learn from the AAF's successes

It doesn't seem like there were many, but the XFL had a great idea with their app and technology which is why Terry Dundon invested in the league and promptly took the IP and walked away. The AAF also gave the XFL markets if the league ever moves a team or looks to expand. San Antonio has an appetite. Orlando isn't a bad football city. The XFL knows all of this now.

The XFL won't need a bailout

The XFL won't need a bailout from a rich benefactor because Vince McMahon is that rich benefactor and he already owns the league. This is important if the XFL experiences cash flow problems similar to the AAF which at this point should be the expectation and not something that comes out of the blue.

The XFL has an extra year

The extra planning helps the XFL. That's just a fact.

The XFL can start to target players in high school or junior college

This is where the AAF made a misstep. There are some players who would rather get paid than go to school. The NFL still has its same rules regarding age limit, but if some players want to make money early, the XFL should welcome them with open arms.

The expansion of legalized sports gambling

Legalized sports gambling simply hasn't penetrated enough markets for it to move the needle . . . yet. Another year and more states will have legalized gambling - a bunch already are setting up votes to take that tax money - so the XFL will be in a better situation than the AAF.

Take it for what it is. These leagues are a risk but then again so is the NFL.
