I will readily admit,my first reaction was me being totally pissed off at the hire. I think I posted a couple days prior,like my worst fear was them hiring McCarthy with Aaron swooping in with his old coach. A week later, I’ve warmed up a touch and have accepted our situation and as with anyone,am willing to give him a chance. The press conference definitely swayed me…..talk about passion for the Steelers. What a dream for a home town kid.

I’ve watched tons of endorsements. From Joe Montana to Big Ben. I’ve watched his interviews through this media circus whirlwind. There is no doubt he will give us everything he’s got in quest for #7. I was struck by the way he said he never stopped coaching even after his last job. Figuring out schemes,schemes and more schemes.

I will say one thing……a resume of coaching the Packers,Cowboys and now for his swan song the Pittsburgh Steelers, I mean seriously. Talk about an impressive list. And talk about being thrown into the hot seat. Certainly nothing he’s not used to.

And finally my last comment. I watched a KC Chiefs news tape about fan reaction to the hiring of Andy Reid. To a capital T it was like our reaction. The fans wanted a young hotshot up and coming mind. The fans were absolutely pissed at the “fat **** retread” coming to take over. There are many similarities. We can only dream that it turns out the same.

PS……I do kind of wish he would use his middle name for this job 😉


 
I am not sold but it is what it is. I would presume he will give it his all. So he will get my support initially and will see how it transpires.

I like his hiring process so far for the most part perhaps minus one raw coach that I hear is being hired.

Other than that look forward to the draft and free agency and to see how the season unfolds.
 
All good. For years we have been begging for change. Well we got it.

His hiring marks rhe biggest change. I think he was hired for 1 specific reason and that is to get Pittsburgh a franchise qb. Teams are nothing without a franchise qb.

He will not be around for 20 years. Huge change.
Offense will be better. Dare I say the Steelers will be brought into this century on offense?

For one Im happy Tomlin is FINALLY out of here so there’s that. Good luck Mike Tomlin on your life’s work.
Two, I’ve nicknamed Big Mike McCarthy John Candy one of my all time favorites. I mean that affectionately so no need to get excited.
Three, so far I kind of like the staff John Candy is assembling. They really cleaned house and only kept three holdovers from Shades’ staff but I like the hires so far. Interesting to see if Campen and his assistant can elevate the young OL play.
I’m not buying 100% into this yet and will proceed with caution. I’m feeling better than at first but still have some doubt and we’ll see how the rest of the hires go as the staff gets built.
QB remains a huge ???? For me as I’m sure for all of us.
I don’t want the very immobile Aaron Rodgers back here and think that would be a mistake.
So much will depend on whom is under center and at this point who knows. Howard, a FA, a trade, a rookie, Aaron Rodgers. This is the biggest outlier of all.

Yeah that QB dilemma is a huge problem. There is no Darnolds this time around playing captain save a ho.

I hope whatever their decision is that the next draft they go into it like they need a franchise and draft one minus someone blowing it up this season and leaving no doubt.

If Aaron doesn't come back which they say they want his answer before FA, I have a feeling they may try and sign Malik Willis or even trade for Mac Jones.
I think they want a veteran in house besides Mason.

I am hoping they get rid of Mason for me he brings little to no value and they could go with a vet and still draft one to complete the room…
 
If they bring Aaaa-Ron back it virtually stops the progress for a QB. I heard they gave him a time frame for his decision and that is something I respect of McCarthy.

Mason needs to be gone but also realize he is very cheap back-up QB, with starter experience. If he is kept, he is #3QB.

Will Howard lost a year, partially due to injury but mostly due to predecessor coach. McCarthy will evaluate and know what to do. I’m guessing Will to be our starter, Aaa-rod #2 or not here, rudolf or vet pick up, #3 drafted competition.

The tomlin regime and coaching ways are gone, there will be no copying him / his scheme / either side of ball. He is just going to be gone / disappeared all the way around.


PS: I don’t think McCarthy tells Aaaa-Ron he has the starting job, it will be a completion as it should be. We will not progress long term with a 43 yr old QB.

I never hated the hire like some. would I have liked to get Shula yes but I am really comfortable with MM especially after watching the videos of him since he was hired, I also won't hate bringing back A aron for another year if he is up to it.

One thing is very obvious and that is how much he loves the city of Pittsburgh. I don't know if you could have found another coach that will be as hell bent on winning number 7 then MM will be.

There was another head coach from Pittsburgh (Crafton) that worked out pretty damn well for us, and when he was hired there were a lot of what the hell was Dan thinking remarks out in the world.

for me I'm all in on Mike, I'm actually excited for the up coming season which is not something I have said in a few years. I also love the fact the we have some one that is in love with the city the team and the people of Pittsburgh. I'm happy for him and wish him great success not only for our Steelers but for Mike. what a dream this must be for him.
 
I wanted a young OC or a DC who would understand how to modernize the approach. Neither happened, so McCarthy was, IMO, the best retread available (including Harbaugh). I'm happy the Steelers have an offensive-minded coach and he's putting together the best looking coaching staff the Steelers have had in the past decade. A lot hinges on finding a QB...actually, everything hinges on that and hopefully the combination of the FO and McCarthy can find and develop a long-term starter.
 
I've been fine the whole time. From the start we knew we were getting an offensive coach with a good history of hiring assistants, and who would not be around 20 years.

The recent playoff record is a tad concerning, but still not as bad as Tomlin's was. And 2 of his 3 playoff losses in Dallas were 1-score games.

Playing Devil's advocate here. But, how do raw coaches become experienced if they don't get to work with experienced coaches?
 
Extremely happy Tomlin is gone, but we hired a guy that has what, 1 playoff win in 8 seasons or something??? So again, we'll be in a wait and see mode all season.
I would've preferred one of the younger guys, but It'll be nice to see an offensive minded head coach and how different that side of the ball will look.

True just an observation he might turn out great. Good thing is he is an assistant so probably lesser of a concern..
 
I look at this like the draft and free agency, let’s see what happens. You have to give it some time. I was all for the young up and comers, tearing it down, building it back up through the draft and signing free agents that are going into their second contract. It’s nice to hire a guy who is from the area and passionate about the team but that won’t mean squat once the season starts.

Getting all emotional at your introductory news conference may of eliminated some of the angst among fans but this team has some serious issues starting at QB and over paid and aging defensive players. This is gonna take a while and allot of hard work and better decisions from the owner, GM, coach and entire organization. Patience I have as long as there’s notable progress in personnel with a positive future that becomes apparent regardless of what the record is next year. With the previous coach, I never got that feeling so there’s that, I guess hope is back.
 
My son and I have been happy with his hiring this whole time and after that presser, we like him even more. Like Blitz and Steelerfan448 stated, they have to work on getting that franchise QB and they are extremely hard to come by, and often enough, even more difficult to coach up. If anyone can do that, it's big Mike.

Here we go, Steelers...Here we go!
 
This is as Meh a move as possible for me... not bad... plebty of potential positives, but of the like 20some options we had been suggesting for a Tomlin replacement the last two years, he was on the lower end of tge guys we would want here...

Lets face facts, a traditional west coast offense is still basically a fifty year old scheme.., its not like its some state of the art, newfangled thing

Its gonna be better than what we have had, but it is still older scheme that was modified two decades ago

Teams have modified that scheme and I am not sure what version they will run. They probably will need some run after the catch options.

But ultimately they need one solid outside WR and one solid slot.
 
About a week before Tomlin resigned I booked a week in September in Pittsburgh to see some Pirate games, a Steelers game, and a Pine Richland Rams game.

I wasn't even sure that I would go to the Steelers game, it was last on my priority list. I refuse to pay a **** ton of money to watch a piss poor product on the field. That was the state of the franchise in my eyes. In the last 3 of our home openers, we had our ***** handed to us in an embarrassing fashion in 2 of them. **** that. I am not going to pay top dollar to see a team repeat the same old tired bullshit again, and again, and again.

So glad that the cycle is broken and looking forward to a fresh start.
 
Very happy for McCarthy and it brings the feels like when Cowher was hired. Hometown kid coaching the team. No doubt he will continue the no nonsense type of coaching PIT historically has had, except now it’s offense initiated. Waiting for the full staff to be chosen to see Mike’s mindset though.

Sort of following Buckeye’s trope and taking a big picture assessment of it all. In a way, I am starting to see what Art2 and Omar logic was based on and I can’t honestly disagree with their conclusion. Chuck Noll had a QB when he started, and then got TB12 (although it took a while). Cowher came onboard with a QB (NOD) and Tomlin had Ben. The next coach would have nowhere near the type of experienced QB on the roster and using a seasoned HC to navigate the transition of finding the next young QB with a playoff roster is much smarter than using a young coach without a situated vet QB to start their coaching career. I can’t think of any coach success story with that scenario.

I know Mike can coach, and he’s a successful QB developer. So the optimism is there.
 
Number One, I'm glad Shades :cool: is gone. I never thought I would see this day. Seriously.
Number Two, I will trust the process. I will note that no one else has hired Shula or Scheelhaase either.
Number Three, yinz wanted an offensive-minded coach. Well, there you go. Downside, there are no good QB's in the draft this year, that'll have to wait until 2027.
Number Four, and most importantly, Big Ben and the Deebo & Joe Show approve. If Deebo is good with it, who am I to disagree?

 
I was disappointed ar first, suggesting he was like sh!t on a shingle. If I were the owner of a 5B dollar business I would prefer experience at HC. It will be interesting to see how everything unfolds.

Barring a big roster turnover, I am not expecting great things this year.
At QB Rudy ain't the answer, nor is 6th round draft pick Howard, we will end up with another FA vet, either A-Aron, Kirk Cousins, or Joe Flacco. In today's Win Now mentality you do not have time to develop a young coach or QB. Again, no good QB's in the draft this year but 2027 will be much better.
The Tomlin Fan Club will be eagerly rooting for the white guy to fail but as long as he loses a playoff game by less than double digits in the next 9 years it will be an improvement.
