I had turned hoping to see the Ravens lose after that crapfest we put on display Sunday. I saw OBJ score his TD late in the game and he got flagged and the ref called him for unsportsmanlike saying he took his helmet off on the field.

Now I watched the replay and OBJ didnt take his helmet off until he was beyond the endline and circled around the sideline. I know the spirit of the rule, but I didnt see what was wrong with it. He was never on the field without the helmet. That 15 yds couldve changed the outcome of the game.

Sorry, just wanted to talk about something other than our impending doom.

Damn I thought you were going to talk about that pathetic PI call that handed the Ravens a ticket back into the game

But yeah I agree with you, it was a weird call on OBJ too

The helmet rule is the least called penalty until the ref's (owners / big money) need a different outcome. I see players take the lids off continuously. Several per weekend of games and NO flags thrown. Then this.

OBJ has gotten pretty annoying and seems to draw some flags other guys wouldn't. That said, we know how the officials call celebration penalties and there's an easy way to avoid getting one. No clue why this particular one was a call based on the description. Maybe because he wasn't on the sideline where the players are supposed to be?

I think he has a case not being on the field of play with his helmet off. Just means he won't be fined.

My question is, and maybe I'm mistaken, but isn't it against the rules to spike the ball after a touchdown? I could have sworn it was, maybe it's been changed. But the Pats* have done it for years after every TD, and I never see a flag.

No, It's a penalty to spike it in the field of play. Like after a big catch or a first down. TDs are fair game to spike.

While game action is going on, it's considered a delay of game penalty, since the refs have to chase after it.

Makes sense in field of play

Or to spike it in close proximity to another player in the end zone as in taunting.

He was definitely off the field of play. Seems like the refs just hate his showboating...like a certain #84 we all love.

OK, thanks Cope. I appreciate the clarification.
