Man it was going pretty good and then kind of bottomed out at the end. I think number one should be be win the turnover battle. Because 9 times out of ten that will lose a game for you if you are on the losing end.

Nice job although I would have said "not get boned by the umps" (e.g. Chargers, Saints) but there is nothing the team can do to control that so it shouldn't count. Improved secondary and holding late leads go hand in hand. Surprised a new/improved PK wasn't on the list.
 
No mention of continued quality OL play. I fear with Munch gone, the OL is going to take a big slide back.

that is a guess at this point.

good write-up, hopefully with the two main drama queens gone the team can focus on the game and not on when so and so will return or what so and so did in the locker room

If the secondary can improve and maybe get a pick or 12 and the WR step up to and make some plays, this team should get back where they belong
 
GREAT write up by Leslie / SN. The n umber ONE is spot on correct. Those two ****-heads caused a LOT of drama and distracted to no end the entire team, including the coaching staff. Losing Joey will also help in that department of drama. TEAM unity and losing a disrespectful coach is a giant PLUS for this team. NO EXCUSES

It's not just Munchak leaving but also an age issue. Our guys are starting to get up there. And the drop off from starters to backups is pretty severe. We've had seasons derailed when these guys were in their prime because of injury. Now we have ages 31, 33, 30, 29 and whoever our RT is across the line.

If we were grooming some talent behind it, maybe I'd be okay but Okorafor and Hawkins haven't looked all that great and the rest of the backups are "just guys" that are either very late draft picks, minimum salary veterans, or guys that have floated (and been cut) by teams around the league.

I've said this before this off-season. I am penciling in an offensive lineman as our 1st round pick next year. It's so apparent that this positional grouping is going to be a need next year that we will force picking it no matter what. Tight End is an outside chance if Vance McDonald gets hurt as well and there's a 1st round guy available but that's unlikely.

FS might be a high pick as well. With Davis contract drawing to an end and the lack of depth at the position. Never heard a negative on Oko so not sure if I agree with that part of your comment. But by the end of the preseason we should have a better feel for where the Steelers are at the position.

I do like our depth at Oline, Finney could be a starter in most teams, Feiler actually was a starter so it leaves two high picks with upside as backups to both tackle position, I have high hopes on Chuck becoming our future LT when Villy calls it a career

I thought about this the other day. Decastro was the last high pick we have used on the line in 2012,#24. Gilbert 2011,2nd round. Pouncey #18 in 2010. Big Ben and our RB’s have had the fortune of having the best OL in front of them for the last 6 years. Remember Ben running for his life for 4 years? Not all the OL’s fault, we had a OC that helped that situation along.

My fear is as Ben calls it quits,our all star line goes with him. Let’s hope we will be prepared.

It's not a good guess. Munchak was a beloved coach here. A coach who could plug in a rookie or in-experienced starter and get satisfactory results. As Ben put it, he's got extra credibility with that gold jacket.


Saying the new OL coach will be as good as Munchak is like saying rookie wide receiver Dionate Johnson will be as good as Brown.

In both cases the Steelers will be taking a big step or two backwards.

I doubt it. For one they attacked the WR position in free agency and the draft. So they should be able to spread the ball around with that and the remaining on the roster skill payers.. So that should help prevent a "big" step backwards.


The O-line coach had plenty of time to mentor under Munch, and the Steelers had plenty of time to evaluate him. Also that is a veteran group, so Munch's excellent ability to groom O-linemen shouldn't take a hit initially.

Down the road with younger players? who knows...

Be like when Cowher left. It will take a few seasons for everyone to forget everything.

This... I don't see a drop off with the OL. These guys are all vets. I would worry more if they were plugging in a bunch of young guys. The guys that are left are about as coached up as they are going to be.
