Leading up to the 2021 NFL Draft starting on April 29th, we will be releasing several draft profiles of prospects who could potentially see themselves on the Pittsburgh Steelers. Next up…

Chuba Hubbard (Running Back), Oklahoma State, RS Junior

The Need:

Rooney II on the run game: "We’ve got to be a lot better in running. We don't want to see the Pittsburgh Steelers last in the league in rushing ever again. … we’ll be looking for ways to improve in the draft. It’s something we’ve gotta fix. We’re working on it."

— Brooke Pryor (@bepryor) March 25, 2021

The Steelers have been meeting with several running backs during the pre-draft process. The “higher ups” in the Steelers’ organization have consistently reiterated this offseason that they will focus on improving the run game. One part of improving the run game is adding to the running back room. We’re really not sure what round the team will do so, but a safe bet is that the Steelers will spend a 2021 draft pick on a running back. Hubbard has reportedly spoken to the Steelers during the pre-draft process.

Both Oklahoma State OT Teven Jenkins and RB Chuba Hubbard said they have talked to the Steelers.

Hubbard measured in at 6’0″ and 210 lbs at Oklahoma State’s pro day on Thursday. Although, his testing numbers won’t jump out to you, the running back tested well. He ran a 4.48 40-yard dash. He is projected as a 4th-5th round pick. He is ranked as ESPN‘s 9th best running back in the class and 153rd best draft prospect on ESPN‘s Best Player Available prospect list.

Pros:

  • Clean footwork
  • Experience: Saw at least 120 carries in each of the three years that he played at Oklahoma State
  • Productivity: Hubbard can produce! In 2019, he ran for over 2,000 yards and 21 touchdowns on over 300 carries
  • Plays faster than his 4.48 40-yard dash time
  • Seems to be capable of carrying a heavier workload; see 2019 and his 328 carries that year
  • Physicality as a runner, can move through would-be tacklers
  • Coachable: Improved in the area of ball security concerns, fumbles decreased from 5 in 2019 to 2 in 2020.
  • Patience: Patient when deciding on what hole to hit and then hits it with explosiveness!

Cons:

  • Injury concerns; Missed some time in 2020 with an ankle injury before ultimately deciding to opt out to prepare for the draft
  • Spotty vision
  • Limited versatility; at times he seemed uncomfortable with catching passes out of the backfield
  • Ball security concerns: 4 fumbles in 2018 and 5 in 2019
  • Struggles with pass protection at times; very dependent on cut blocks

He posted a 4.36 forty at his pro day. Had a huge year with 2000 yards in the past.
Seems to be all healed up. If we don't land Etienne, Harris or Williams ...... I wouldn't be totally upset with this Canadian boy in the later rounds.

If a team needs somebody to take a knee at the end of the game other than the QB, Hubbard's the guy!

Just for the record,............ MOST Canadian's, boy or girl are A-ok. Isn't Shanai from those parts and she is fine ans can be...................... (just an example)

Be prepared to see a lot of people jump off the bridge when we draft Teven Jenkins in the 1st.

Why would people jump off a bridge? That'd be a really good pick.
Exactly we haven't talked much about him perhaps a dark horse candidate but I would have no problem with him in 1. There is a few T's I would take over him but still wouldn't be disappointed if that is the direction they went in. Horn if there I think would a hard decide for me. A lot want RB but I slightly prefer a LT or CB.

I think he just got overshadowed by some of the prospects somehow. Everything I've read about him is he plays with a meanstreak. We need a physical offensive line and he seems like a perfect fit to bring some of that attitude back to our OL.

From a Steelers perspective he might fit what they want more than what I want. If they truly want to address the running game he would be a great place to start. I think if you get him then trade up in 2 for Williams I see a running attack with Banner manning the RT spot much improved. Get C Hill in 3 and you have the makings of a dominant run blocking unit. CB is obviously the wildcard in this thinking as well as pass rusher. I think that want comes off the board in 4 but value will be heard.

Right now as I look at it, the passing game is okay and the running game is dreadful. They legitimately need a new starter at left tackle, center, and running back (probably right tackle too, but we can't ask for too much). The secondary does need an outside starter to replace Nelson, but with Minkah, Haden, Sutton, and Edmunds, you have some talent in place. Four of the five players in the secondary are pretty good and you also have a strong pass rush to help them out. The offense needs three new starters out of seven that directly contribute to the ground game (OL, RB, TE) and they could also use a blocking tight end, so three starters and a backup. A key piece on the offensive line would be the best long-term investment. If the Steelers plan to go for it this year, they're going to take a running back.

Didn't say it wouldn't be a good pick but can see that they would jump off a bridge because it isn't a RB or bigger name player. It isn’t a name that is talked about amongst the others but I personally think it would be a great pick. I would love to either pick up Williams in the 2nd or if not available the best C on the board and then grab and RB in round 3 like Sermon or maybe even Gainwell.

I like NASTY and Jenkins is a top talent, I'd take him as well and he would be a day one starter. Tomlin might show layal to Banner but Jenkins is head and toes above that talent. A RB won't do much if the line isn't performing and granted we do have a new OL coach and assistant but I don't think he can turn the Players we got into the running game production we desire........ with out a talent infusion and Jenkins would be an infusion with a short fuse.

Jenkins is on NFLN and they are asking him what he thinks about going to the Steelers @24...very interesting.

36 benches at Jenkins pro day.
He's all about dominating and destroying people.

Says he can play LT, RT, RG...anywhere they want him.

Says he feels gracious and blessed to be mentioned in the 1st round with all these high level players.

He was raised, with his brother, by a single dad. Mom died of breast cancer when he was 8.

Can we draft him now?

He gives me that BigDot vibe but at T. Perhaps a little underrated but a load that could surprise how quickly he comes on at LT.

I’ve read a few articles about him. His story and play is infectious. Unfortunately teams ahead of us will see it as well. I think he will be gone.
But if not they can run to the podium for this guy.
