2016 NFL Draft: Player Profiles

While I admire what Big Mac has done - I think a DT/NT who can apply pressure and open holes for the DE's and LB's is a critical piece of what's missing. With the option of Butler, or Robert Nkemdiche (if he is there) we get that INSTANTLY. The next area of concern is SS - question is do we wait until the 2nd to get one or will we find one by round 4???

It's tough to use a first on a NT, since it's such a passing league, unless we are going to go with 3 Dlinemen on passing downs, we use 2DL a majority of the time, I'd like to use 3 to add some size and ability to collapse the middle of the pocket, but unless Tomlin/Butler change, it's not worth using a #1 on a NT.

Probably the most realistic pick I have seen. Steelers like to go safe with their first pick usually and OL and DL are usually pretty safe picks. Also, with McLendon probably leaving that leaves McCullers at DT. I would also consider going with a Hargrave later in the draft and having Hargrave and McCullers split time depending on run or pass situation.

I understand your concern - but, I think we need a replacement, up front for Big Mac - someone who is better than Big Dan. I see that in both Butler and Nkediche...

Ding, ding, ding. All the evidence shows that Tomlin and Butler are de-emphasizing the 3-4 NT position. If we take a DL early (and I'm talking about pure DL not a 260 pound OLB / edge rusher type), it'll be a clone of Heyward or Tuitt so that we can rest those two more, but it will definitely not be a guy with 3-4 NT (Casey Hampton) body type.
 
I think a lot of the decision on NT will be decided way before the draft.

They aren't going to go through March without addressing NT and D-line depth. Depending on who it is and how much we spend will probably determine how interested we are in NT in this draft.

McLendon played well this season --- teams didn't run against us worth a **** when he was on the field.
 
I will not be surprised if we draft the top Guard in that slot.

I've had that thought too, but I'm off it now. It seems enticing when you're drafting #25 to think we'd get good value if the top guard is available, but we've invested heavily enough in the O-line already, both in terms of high draft picks (Pouncey-DeCastro-Gilbert = #1, #1, #2) and big second contracts (all three will have them when DeCastro re-ups).

The beauty of having Munchak as our O-line coach is that he should be able to squeeze an adequate performance out of guys who don't have round 1 / round 2 talent. Especially at guard. So why invest highly in yet another O-lineman when you can draft someone in round 3 or 4, have Munchak coach him up and have him compete against other guys already on the roster like B.J. Finney and Chris Hubbard. Hell you could even try Mike Adams at guard if you are desperate.

So my Plan A is bring back Foster and Plan B is the preceding paragraph. Sure, if the next Faneca is available at #25 we should take him, but unless it's a very rare talent I would wait until later in the draft. Don't force it just because a guy is the #1 rated guard in this year's class

jenkins could be another Jarvis, does not stand out at 1 position is more a if polished a a supreme utility LB that you could line up up anywhere.

I think the price for A'shawn will be to much to move up so I stay at 25 and take CB Eli Apple who could come in challenge for a starting gig right away the way McFadden did in 05. Gay retained and opposite a rotation of Cockrell and Apple slot retained B|oykin without giving up our 5th rounder since he only played 24.7 of the snaps. who will compete vs Golsen for the slot job the loser comes in when we go dime.

target CB Sean Smith and Johnson see which is willing to come.

There is absolutely no way in hell I'd take a DE in the first 3 rounds, as Heyward and Tuitt are already first rounders, who are playing like 1st rounders. However, McLendon is a FA himself, and we could use an upgrade at NT, as the position is crucial to our D.

If there is a Hampton or Steed sitting there, I could live with it. But we are desperate for an OLB, CB and S.
