This is my 10th draft of putting together an official "What I Would Have Done" vs. Tombert.
Some times I think I do better, other times not so much. It's close. For the most part, I'm building positions and looking much further out that the Steelers do.
I wanted Jared Gaither in the supplemental draft in the summer of 2007 (a 4th round pick would have gotten him). I wanted to trade up for Michael Oher in 2009 (instead of Evander Hood). We really didn't address the OT position until 2011 (Gilbert).
I was looking at ILB's earlier and NT's earlier.
So it's difficult when I look back and "what I would have done" include trading back and getting Brandon Roby in 2013 (instead of Shazier) and picking Xavier Rhodes in 2014 (instead of Jones).
But here we are. I pick not based on what I did in the past, but what the Steelers actually are.
1-32 Hunter Henry, TE
I would have traded back. No doubt, once William Jackson was selected. No one really on my Steelers-specific board I would have been in love with. I would have taken the Bronco's deal. At 1-32, I think Spence, Billings (who the Steelers obviously had issues with so remove him), Vernon Butler (picked right before this), even Myles Jack would have been in discussion and if Artie Burns is still there, I'd listen to that too. But I've been a fan of Hunter Henry for a while and that's the way I go. I think he's Heath Miller v2.0
2-58 Sean Davis, CB/S
I still look at him like a potential off-man/zone corner for us so I like this pick and am not overriding the War Room. Position of need and it works on my board.
3-89 Justin Simmons, FS
Everyone here liked him including me and we all hoped he would be available in the 3rd round, which he was. We have tons of openings in the secondary on our roster. I pick him.
3-94* Javon Hargrave, DT
If Hargrave lasts 5 more picks, I'm not going to override the draft room. There are lots of choices to me at DT left here if he's gone, including Andrew Billings and Willie Henry. If you guys think Hargrave is gone, then it's Willie Henry as the pick likely since Billings is probably off our board due to medical.
4-123 Rashard Robinson, CB
This was a good target round for this talent, even with his off-field and school issues with Les Miles. I still think there's room on the roster for one more back-end player so I now go into camp with Davis, Simmons and Robinson to look for help. Other options include Hawkins (who I do like) and Kenneth Dixon, RB or Jordan Howard, RB. If there is something REALLY bad in Robinson's interview or background check that we don't know about it's probably stick with the Hawkins pick at OT.
5-164 Moritz Boehringer, WR
If we still had the pick
6-201 Kevon Frazier, SS
If we still had the pick
6-220 Keith Marshall, RB
Too much talent to pass up and we have little depth behind Bell once Williams' contract is up after this year. Plus we have to think Bell might out-price himself in contract negotiations. You never know. I think Feeney is too much of a project, too light and I don't like the history of injured shoulders.
7-229 DeMarcus Ayers, WR
I'm okay with the room and understand the need for a punt return specialist. Can't have Brown doing that anymore except maybe in the playoffs.
7-246 Eric Striker, LB
I'm actually okay with Tyler Matakevich too. These guys are similar prospects. I'm kind of shocked Tomlin didn't like Striker better. He's more the runner-hitter type and might fit the Sean Spence mold in my opinion. I don't think this pick matters either way.
