Ben replaces Maddox (loses this game) and runs table until AFC championship. 2019 week 2 Mason replaces Ben (loses game) and ...............

Was that roster weaker or stronger than the 2019 team? Can lightning strike again in same spot some years later?

Wanna know why this can’t happen now, the major difference? Mike Tomlin. End of story.

Tomlin couldn't pull it off. I think we had a pretty stout defense back in those days.
I had Tommy Maddox phone number at the time, he was sucking pretty bad and I remember the day before that game joking with co-workers that I should call him and tell him not to suck so bad.

Back then we had a defense and a coach. The downside is that this may buy Tomlin enough wins to keep his job. As was said in "The Office", "But you know, Bob, that will only make someone work just hard enough not to get fired".

Anyone that thinks the 2019 Steelers is anywhere close to the 2004 Steelers team would have to be delusional.

Biggest difference is the coach. The coach in 2004 actually had game plans and adjusted. There was more talent on defense that year and a hall of fame RB as well

I’m thinking 8-8 this year which would not be a bad showing for the young Mr.Rudolph. Hell, that would be 8-6 for him the rest of the way which isn’t too bad at all.
I like what I’ve read about him with his attention to preparation and detail, and he’s a film junkie too, all good things to me.
I can see him quickly building rapport with JuJu, D. Johnson, and especially Vance. He’s already got the comfort level with JWash so I expect to see more production from him.
They need to shelve Moncrief this year on IR, and either sign someone or promote from PS but do something.
Also see more passes to Connor and Samuels as well in short passing game.

Close.
The Office is an British/NBC sitcom. Neither of those television shows contained the quote you quote.

Office Space is a Mike Judge movie, and both he and the movie are national treasures, and contain the line you reference.

It would seem that the loss of Munch has significantly weakened the performance of the offensive line. Who knew - apparently Munchak went and studied opposing D-Line's strengths and tendencies and then coached up the guys each week to be prepared for that. It seems now (just two games in, but...) that the line has taken a significant step back, particularly in the run game.

(Tommy Maddox and then Ben's line was really good at run blocking and they got better as the season progressed because everyone knew it was going to be the team's bread and butter.) As far as Cowher being good at halftime and game time adjustments, I remember he was pretty good at defensive adjustment but I don't remember the offense being particularly flexible. In the Stewart years they came up with some weird stuff to take advantage of his athleticism and minimize his need to make decent reads, but I still don't remember a great deal of 'in-game' adjustment offensively.

The fact is, Ben Roethlisberger is literally the best QB the franchise has ever had. And it's not close. Terry won more SBs and he was probably the best or second best "Big Game" QB of all time. But lb for lb, dollar for dollar (I do love you Terry) it isn't close. Ben is far and away the better all around QB.

So, is it realistic to even hope that Rudolph can step in and be something like Roethlisberger? No. It doesn't hurt Ben's legacy to wish and hope, but the reality is Mason is far far more likely to be Case Keenum or maybe even Jake Plummer or Charlie Batch. Sure, I'd LOVE for the Steelers to have a couple H.O.F. QBs on the roster. It happened for the Packers, I suppose it could happen for the Steelers. I don't, however, have a great deal of faith that this will come to fruition.

That's not to say I expect Mason to suck. I don't. I imagine he'll be a perfectly serviceable QB. But all you folks who have been bitching about Ben's interceptions and calling out "Big Dummy"... I expect you're about to see what life was like in the post N.O.D. years. Lots of QBs, not a great deal of significant success. (Consider, the most consistently successful QB on the Steelers roster between Neil O'Donnel and Ben Roethlisberger was Kordell Stewart. There's your reality.

wig, great post but also realize that those mid-leval QBs had a pretty stout defense where-as Mason does not.

Salute the nation

There's 7 first round picks on this defense, 8 if you count Fitzpatrick. The 2004 defense had Hampton, Troy, and Farrior as 1st rounders.

True, but that D had Dick LeBeau coaching them in his prime. This team has, err, gulp, Keith Butler, a glorified LB's coach in over his head.

Who's fault is that?
Mike Tomlin. It's his fault, nobody else but him. And he very well may go down in flames for keeping Butler around as long as he has.
