Nice Confluence, I agree. They don't have to resign Shazier, they just took his 5th year option, so he's got another year before we have to worry about a new contract.

And I was correct. I did NOT want Green. I felt Worlds wasn't worth Tag money. I also think Pouncey is over paid, expect that to come up again if he's out for a while. 20.20 stuff.

For a change we have money and are close to a Super Bowl. Now was the time to spend...we sit on our hands.

Right now, the Steelers are $93M under the expected 2019 cap! We can easily sign whomever contract is up on the team. It would have been nice to get a top DB in free agency, don't ya think?

From the people I saw signed those "top DBs' were not worth what they got. Overpaying is still overpaying.

Yet the going rate for a top CB in FA is going up every year. If you want an upgrade at the position you pay for it. CB has been a huge issue for us for numerous years.....but hey...we drafter to more this season. We should be good.

But don't you want to pay for people who are worth it? I don't care if they have to pay 10-15m/year if the guy is worth that.
 
Worth? We needed guys that can press at the LOS. Play bump and run coverage. I wonder if we would have signed one or two over the last few seasons if we might have been able to actually cover someone in the AFCCG last season? The going rate is the going rate.

we got to the AFCCG with two rookies and a 4th round comp pick in the defensive backfield. They got chewed up by the same team that chews up every other goddamned team in the league, including, btw, those with the top-notch high paid DB's. Again, the clear reason is that, regardless of what D we had or the players involved the *'s are NOT going to score less than 17 points. you'd have to be surprised if they scored less than 24-27, So, no, I don't think it would have helped significantly.

Wouldn't you expect the two rookies to be better this year? No reason not to. **** held his own pretty well most of the season. He may, actually, have achieved his ceiling, but he doesn't suck, by any means.

All we heard last offseason is that, our D played 7 back ups they are going to get destroyed next year. What do they do? Get to the AFCCG to get beat by the team that beats everyone else and only scored 2 less points in the other two playoff games.

Falcons have Trufant ($13.7m) and Alford ($9.5m) on the roster. Trufant got hurt and out for the season. With a $10m CB on the field, the *'s hung 34 on the falcons. Brady threw for 466 yards. *'s had no player with more than 31 yards rushing.

Texans have over $15m into Jackson and Joseph. *'s hung 34 on them. Brady only threw for 287, *'s had no rusher with more than 41 yards.
 
Why do you care or not if the Steelers drop $10 plus mill on a CB so much? Every year the price goes up. Three years ago what they were signing for now seems like a bargin....but it was for more money than ever before. With the cap going up significantly every season the price for a CB in FA will also go up. Hell. We didn't even bring a 1st or 2nd tier CB in for a visit bit we brought in Hightower. Really? We now have some young DB's on the roster that hopefully will continue to improve....but with our QB thinking strongly of retirement from a year to year basis an improvement in our weakest area would not have hurt. We pay top dollars to players every year......why not a FA that will improve our club?

Because I don't want them spending $10m on a guy worth $6m when our guys, quite clearly, did just as well as the higher paid guys (and should be better) for a ton less $ when we could be spending those $ keeping guys like Villanueva, Bell, Brown, Tuitt, Heyward, etc. paid and happy.

One of those guys who just got paid $13m+/year was on that Houston team which allowed 2 points less than our **** guys, too, and started all of 19 games in 4 seasons. Maybe, he turns out to be "worth" it, but, last year is what got him that big contract and on the same Defensive backfield with $15m between two other guys. If Bouye was "worth" 13m+, that is almost $30m in the defensive backfield and they gave up 34 points. The results were two less points than our rookies and comp picks.

We need to be able to man up on defense. Playing a 10 yd cushion on 3rd and 2 and 3 doesn't work. Our defense allows teams with bad QB's to have long sustained drives. Not only does this allow these teams to hang around in games we should win easily but it keeps our offense OFF of the field.

Imagine over the last few off-seasons if we would have brought in a few CB's that can actually man up on a WR.....I'm not talking about just this off season but the last handful. The game changed and we didn't change along with it...it now seems our coaches want to change with the times. ...while we have some nice young DB's now showing promise do you think we can play straight up man coverage at times this season? Maybe.

The point I have been making(a few years now) is if we dipped into FA for a few CB's that can man up we would already using man coverage as part of our packages. Teams know we can't man up and they exploit us. Have been for years. They will continue until we show them we can man up and stop them. Not only would we have the bump and run in our packages if we signed some CB FA.. this would have a loud us to target differed areas on our team during the drafts possibly. So you keep harping about the $$$. And about points per game and all. When we finally start adding the bump and run to our defensive packages I will stop talking about not signing CB FA's....
 
I talk about results that matter. Points. Afccg championship game our 10 yard cushions allowed 2 more points than teams that spent money on cbs. Not sure why you think us spending money on cbs keeps the *'s from scoring more than 17.

All those other teams spending money on cbs and playing different defenses are also giving up 27 points to the *'s week after week.
 
Well that just the thing....while you are happy to just hang around what other teams are doing... if we would have upgraded our CB's the last few years to be able to have a bump and run package we might have beat the Pats.....but go ahead and be happy losing to them the Pats by the same rate that other teams do. It seems you keep referring to this fact all thru out your posts....Hmmm.

That ISNT the thing. What you don't understand is the other teams are trying the things you are advocating (overspending on DB's, different defenses, everything that stupid *** Tomlin can't think of) and the *'s are STILL scoring 24+ points per game on them. What is so hard about figuring that out. We could spend $10m-$15m on a DB to lose by 2 less points?

The end result is that it matters not at all if we had had all that talent in the DB group and held the *'s to 34, 37, 24, whatever. In today's NFL, most teams can score 21-24+ points. If we are scoring 17 in the AFCCG, the chances we are going to win are slim whether it is the *'s on the other side of the ball or North Rhode Island Technical School for the Blind. And that is not even counting that the other team is a cheating organization.
 
So what youre saying is that Spike should take colberts job and youre advocating putting your eggs into the offensive basket to just score more points.?

Not at all. The "five wide *******" schtick is old and abused.

I'm advocating that you spend reasonably to get reasonable results. If you can get a guy for $5m that is just about as good as the guy for $10m+, why would you spend the $10m guy? How much better is that $10m, really? Are you getting Revis in his prime or are you getting a guy who had one good year after 4 in the league? Is that extra $5m worth losing someone you already have?

Everyone is butt hurt because we lost to the *'s. Nothing about how well the team did with rookies in the defensive backfield, "OMG WE CAN'T BEAT THE CHEATING *'S!!" All of the other teams are trying the things that are advocated in this thread, with the same results as we had, except they didn't even get to the AFCCG doing it. Why would us doing the same thing as the other teams have different results?

That doesn't mean "don't try anything", it just means, don't have kneejerk reactions and make reasonable decisions.
