#1 Pass Defense through Six Games...

I don't follow. Out of 6 games we have played the only 2 QBs who have been benched due to poor play thus far. Plus we faced Keenam instead of Bradford. I don't feel like looking through 30 other schedules but I doubt any other team has played Cleveland and Chicago with Kizer and Glennon plus Keenam who is a lifetime backup. And Kizer's best game was against us. The passing YPG given up stat is skewed from the 100 yards Glennon and Bortles both put up. Both were because we couldn't stop the damn run so they didn't even have to throw the ball, not that our pass D was performing spectacularly. And even worse and most importantly, both those games were losses.

My point is, I feel like we have played some unproportionally bad QBs compared to the rest of the league through 6 games causing our pass D YPG stat (the only stat considered in this ranking) to be skewed. Also, what good is a good passing D if you can't stop the run anyhow?

I agree with everything you said. I also think Cinci has one of the better passing O's we will have faced so far so that should be somewhat of a test on Sunday.

I was just trying to reign in the expectations. Big props to the passing D for taking care of business through 6 games. I'm just not ready to anoint them the top passing D just yet even though yes, they are technically ranked #1. IMO the main reasons for the #1 ranking are the horrible opposing QB's and passing games we've faced plus the inability to stop the run.

Sure shut down a red hot Chiefs QB though....

can't point out one aspect without that fact

Agreed, the D looked good against KC and they are trending in the right direction. Need Deebo to keep playing and Tuitt to get healthy. I think we're a top 5 defense then. Just not 100% sold on the pass D as #1...yet.

And Ark, I was referring to the rankings posted by OP that says we're #1 pass D in ypg. I didn't see the rankings you mentioned.

The Chiefs have scored at least 24 points against every other one of their opponents this season.

The Steelers held them to 13 on the Chiefs' own field.

There's a lot to like about the Steelers' defense, but I would like to see them tested more amid a potential title run.

Seeing them play the Colts without Luck and the Packers without Rodgers is kind of deflating for me.

I'll say this one thing about our passD. I'm not praying for a stop this year on 3rd and long, I'm looking forward to a sack!

That is why you look at rankings rather than the specific stat as other teams play some bad QB's too.

Why the HELL would you use, you know, LOGIC ???????(sarcasm alert)

I don't care if it's #1 or not due to good or bad QB, I'm pretty happy, ecstatic actually, with being a top 5. Every team will have great days and bad days, what I want to keep seeing is consistency in being good enough, actually way better than our sputtering O

Much improved this year for sure. I'm still seeing DB's way out of position too much. An improved pass rush is helping cover that up though. Case in point from KC game: Burns was out of position on a corner route, but Smith couldn't find the open man because Hilton was right in his face off the slot blitz.

2017: 154 passing yards per game (#1)
2016: 243 passing yards per game (#16)
2015: 272 passing yards per game (#30)
2014: 253 passing yards per game (#27)

We obviously arent going to hold QB's under 160 yards throughout the entirety of the year, but it appears that we've made tremendous strides.

Have we finally righted this formerly sinking ship?

Blame Coach Tomlin...

Ben threw 5 INT's in one game...is he on your list of bad QB's???

If you're looking at TOs yes, of course. However the ranking OP posted was strictly pass YPG against so Ben's 5 TOs were irrelevant to the ranking. He still put up decent yardage that game because all we did was throw against the worst run defense in the league.

The fact that OP even said "we obviously aren't going to hold QBs under 160 yards throughout the entire year" proves at least he agrees with me somewhat that there were some games that skewed the stats and he recognizes this is unsustainable.

You're right Scotty. It looks like Burns is ready and doing all the right things early in the game. He has to learn you need to do it for 60min. He started losing his responsibilities late, in the 4th QTR. If he starts being sound for all 4 quarters, this pass D will improve.

He's in his second year, so I'd expect he will get better after getting ripped this week in the film room. Lake will be all over him about the biggest play being let up in that game, because of him losing his responsibility, and nearly costing us the game doing it again later. He's young, he's competitive, and now he has a great mentor opposite him in Joe Hayden. If nothing else, I think his play will improve quicker having that seasoned vet opposite of him and giving him the right advice to succeed in this league.

The pass Defense does look improved, but we haven't seen them play any top QB or top wide receivers.
I would still bet the house Brady and Bellicheck have their way with the Steelers d.

KC didn't.......

EXCELLENT post and I noticed the exact same thing when I watched the game. This "D" is improving as the season progresses.

Getting Haden and Hilton stepping up has made the secondary better add a better rush we have improved.

The D was very impressive against KC. Made a believer out of me. Only thing that concerns me is we just seem to have the Chiefs number. We are like the pats are to us.

D stepped up big time, especially in the 2nd half. I'll gladly eat crow after this one. Way to go D, they were fun to watch!

It wasn't looking good starting out. They turned it around and shut them the **** down.

Or ST captain had more 2nd half passing yards than Dalton. I think more than the Bengal as and "offense"

Haden is looking real good. Burns taking some risks but getting better. This D is getting sacks on a crazy pace and getting turnovers. They are playing WAY better than we could have hoped and we have had some injuries.

They made great adjustments at halftime today. The Bungles were beating them pretty easy in the 1st half but were totally shut down in the 2nd half.

If healthy heading into the playoffs, this D and this team should be scary!

Haden Hilton and Watts have played lights out and has improved this defense beyond what any of us thought we would be.

I'm going to go with the addition of Haden as the most significant factor. Followed closely by how quickly Hilton and Watt have adjusted to being starters at the NFL level. Seriously, even with Hilton and Watt in there, can you imagine this pass D being this good with Ross Cockrell on the other side of Burns? Nope

Who dey that wanted Butler fired after the third game?

Hilton and Watts have been so impressive. They don't look like guys who had no starting experience in the NFL out there.
