Pound for pound might be the best coach of the last three. Constantly lost key free agents because we couldn't afford them, won divisions and playoff games with O'Donnell, Stewart, Maddox, and Tomczak. Tamed a wild, undisciplined rookie QB and won 15 games the first year, Super Bowl the next.

Most of all, he let his coordinators do their thing.

In one of his interviews he said as for the team and coaching staff he didn’t have any friends.

He said he couldn’t because he had to keep an even / open mind when it came to making team / coaching decisions.
If he would have had a friend in that capacity, it would detract from making the team first decisions.

Solid all around coach and MAN.

Best coach of his time.

I remember being at a teams building meeting in like 98 or 99. We had to go around talking about 2 people who inspired you in your life.
Everyone was picking mom dad grandpa grandma etc.
I picked my hs wrestling coach and Bill Cowher.
Bills passion in the 1st 12 years or so was amazing. It will not be matched.

Lions HC is close.

That is a very good philosophy, although not an easy philosophy to maintain in practice, given the people you spend the most time with are frequently those you work with. As an accountant I have seen too many marriages and friendships turn into bitter animosities due to business/workplace fallings out.

Yeah. Gotta keep some semblance of a human element to it.

Yes it’s a business, but there is a fine line between respect/inmates running the asylum because HC is a players coach.

One of the things he really did well that doesn't get talked about enough, is he overturned and rebuilt the roster into a contender 3 or 4 times. If you look at the starters from the 91 team (Noll's last) to the 95 teams pretty big turnover, same as the 95 team to the 97 team, pretty big turnover, pretty big turnover from the 97 team to the 01 team, then a decent turnover from 01 to 05.
That's a big knock against Tomlin, once the Cowher players and coaches started leaving, the team itself went downhill and was never a threat again.

I remember when Coach stole Josh Miller's soul.

I remember that play like it yea yesterday.

I liked that about Cowher, he showed fire and brim-stone. He also showed god job to players as well.

Tomlin doesn’t even walk in the same tracks yet alone without Cowher’s players.
