Quick take aways:

1 ) Three starters on the OL ( Beachum, Decastro and Foster ) and our top back up tackle ( Adams ) will be free agents in 2016. No way all four players are re-signed. Kinda wish we kept Wes Johnson. This means drafting a tackle this year is likely


2 ) Four players on the DL ( Heyward, McCLendon, Thomas, and Keisel ) will be free agents in 2016. It will take a small mint to re-sign Heyward, and Thomas and Keisel will likely be gone. Add DL to the shopping list in the 2015 draft

Must have. Just registered yesterday. The dead money on Woodley is a boat anchor around the necks of the Steelers 2015 cap

Suh and Houston? Yes please! But our chances are next to zero. Had we not given Allen and Mitchell big time deals, THEN we could have had tone of them.

If Troy is cut, we save 3.75 million. That's a start. Thanks for the memories Troy, and please retire. Ramon Foster, who's solid can save us 1.85 million if cut. That's 5.5 million in savings. Add in the 4 million in space and the Steelers should be able to sign all the rookies and pick up get 1 quality free agent, or a few bargin free agents.

If it were up to me, Troy and Ike would have been released last season. I agree that the Mitchell deal looks shaky. He had one good year on a team with a loaded front seven. Cortez Allen looks like a panic button type of move that blew up in our face.

Colbert has been rather poor on free agents, but decent enough on the draft as of late.

NFL teams with best and worst 2015 salary cap situations

Drew Brees leads the way with a $26.4 million cap charge, second highest in the NFL. New Orleans will likely rework his contract for cap relief, possibly using a voidable contract structure to maximize their savings, which would leave them with a $30 million cap charge for Brees in 2016 and another $10.8 million waiting for them in 2017 if he does not re-sign.

Expect veterans Marques Colston and Jahri Evans to be released to help the team be cap compliant.

With these figures I can definitely see Moore and Thomas as good as gone. Maybe rework Troy,Timmons,Heath and the kickers contracts and we can free up even more space. This is the first year in a long time I can remember not being OVER the cap.

Yeah it could, but it really depends how long management wants to keep him around. Last thing they'd need is someone signed to a huge contract who can't finish it out and play is in decline with age. Ex: Troy. If they do resign Ben it'll probably be a 3 year extension and spread the money out.

QB's don't depend on speed like safeties do, so alot of the good ones can play late into their 30's, I could see 5 years, putting Ben at 37 when it's done.

Good news with the Niners and Cardinals being over the cap....They have a few players that would add depth to the roster if the Steelers were interested.

I see the Steelers being 11 + over after Polamalu and Cam is let go. (I am thinking this is the route they take)

They can add depth easily by extending / cutting contracts.

Even if it's no more than two corners, two OLBers and a backup RB.

That's one less than last year.

and even if it isn't Houston. There is Gore type players ( including Gore) that wouldn't command a ton of money but would solidify the roster.

I don't expect the top free agents, but at the same time I damn sure do not want any one year wonders or bottom barrel free agents this go around.

One of the biggest reasons for a quick playoff exit was what they did or should I say didn't do in free agency last year..............

Looking at cap dollars now is pointless. What you see is NOT what these numbers are going to end up at. Too many cuts, too many restructures.

Just look at the list of things that could easily happen to open up cap room for us (and all are likely with the way Tombert works):

1. Roethlisberger gets a new deal. Cap savings +/- $5 million
2. Pouncey could restructure. Cap savings +/- $3 million
3. Gilbert could restructure. Cap savings +/- $3 million
4. C. Allen restructures. Cap savings +/- $3 million
5. Heyward signs new deal. Cap savings +/- $3 million
6. Polamalu retires. Cap savings $6 million
7. Cam Thomas is released. Cap savings $2 million
8. Suishem could restructure and save $1 million

That's $23 million in room that looks LIKELY to happen. And if the Steelers had to, they could restructure both Timmons and A. Brown again. I hate doing that since they did it last season, but Tombert has done that before.

Then there is also anticipation the cap is going up to another $6 million AND we are carrying over another $1.5 million.

That puts us with about $35 million cap dollars open and 20 players to fill out the roster (most of which are going to be minimum salary guys).

We have some room to do stuff this year, it's just a matter of making smart choices.

In addition to Thomas these would be good places to trim some fat, imo.

12 Marcus Gilbert $6,980,000 $860,000 4 Waayyy too much money for a borderline/average guy.

5 Dri Archer $644,504 $264,992 3 Not a huge hit but the guy is pretty useless and it all adds up.

7 Lance Moore $1,822,500 $1,500,000 1 Again, not a huge amount, but for all he's used I'd think there's someone available (or already on the PS, CJ Goodwin just signed to Reserved/Futures) that could fill the role and maybe Moore could be used as a deal sweetener elsewhere.

I'd add 32 Mike Mitchell $4,950,000 $1,150,000 4 but maybe the light will come on for him in a new D? Guy can't have dropped off that badly in one year can he?

Cam Heyward is one of the few "play makers" left on this D and I think you have to do what you can to keep him.

I could see Troy taking a cut....but honestly he's been relatively ineffective this year and unfortunately emotion can't be part of business decisions so I'm thinking he might be gone.

Gilbert would only save 860.000 against a cap hit of about 5 millions, better keep him and try to improve his playskills. He at least can be serviceable sometimes, can only improve to be consistent

here what we can do to find money :
For this exercise, let’s do some quick math and find some salary cap room. It won’t be hard but in a few cases, it might be ruthless. We will use the figures provided by Overthecap.com, although they are not always 100 percent accurate.
First off, let’s clean up the Old Four on defense. James Harrison and Ike Taylor do not have 2015 contracts, so nothing needs to be done and there are no savings. Start with Troy Polamalu, who has two years left with a $6 million salary for 2015. Cut him before June 1 and you save $3,750,000 in cap space; after June 1 and it’s $6 million. I say wait until June.
Cut Brett Keisel now or later and save $1.5 million. Cut Cam Thomas, save $2 million. Cut Lance Moore, save $1.5 million.
There, we have created $11 million of space on the cap without much effort. Now it gets a little more difficult.
Cortez Allen is due a $3 million roster bonus on March 14, four days after free agency begins, to go with a rounded salary of $2.6 million. If they cut him in June, they save $5.6 million on their cap this year. I don’t think they’ll do it, but it has to be tempting for someone who looked as though the game were too big for him this season.
Do that, and we’re up to $16.6 million
